The day pillar 丁丑 (number 14 of the sixty) belongs to the 甲戌 week. Ten stems cover ten of the twelve branches, so 申 and 酉 get no stem: those two are the void.

Void years (申酉 years)

Two years in every twelve. A void year starts at the Start of Spring (立春, about 4 February), not on 1 January, and the pair ends the day before the Start of Spring two years later.

Natal and Luck-Pillar Tenchusatsu

Besides the years that come round, a chart can hold its void from birth (宿命天中殺, natal tenchusatsu) or meet it in a ten-year luck pillar (大運天中殺). Both are read here from your full chart.

What is tenchusatsu?

Tenchusatsu (天中殺, “heaven’s middle void”) is the Japanese name for the void branches of the sixty-day cycle, called 空亡 (kong wang) in Chinese Four Pillars.

What is tenchusatsu?
  • 年

    Years, months, days

Your two void branches come back as two years in twelve, two months in every year and two days in every twelve.

  • 空

    The same as kong wang

Sanmeigaku (算命学) calls it tenchusatsu, Four Pillars calls it 空亡. The pair is worked out the same way, from the day pillar.

  • 休

    A season, not a curse

Tradition reads it as a time when outside support is thinner: better for preparing, learning and finishing than for starting big things.

The idea is old: the 甲子 cycle pairs ten stems with twelve branches, so every ten-day week leaves two branches without a stem. Chinese almanacs list these as 旬空. Japanese sanmeigaku, systematised in the twentieth century, turned them into the six tenchusatsu types and a timetable of years, months and days. Treat it as a traditional way to pace a life, not a forecast of bad luck.

How to calculate tenchusatsu

Three steps, all done by the calculator above. Doing it once by hand shows why there are six types.

  1. 1

    Find your day pillar

The stem and branch of your birth date in the sixty-day cycle (for example 乙丑). Sanmeigaku uses the calendar date; the day changes at midnight.

  2. 2

    Find its ten-day week

Every week starts on a 甲 day: 甲子, 甲戌, 甲申, 甲午, 甲辰 or 甲寅. Your day pillar belongs to one of them.

  3. 3

    The two branches left over

A week has ten days but there are twelve branches, so two branches get no stem. They are your tenchusatsu, and they name your type.

How to spend tenchusatsu

The traditional advice is about pacing, not fear: a void period suits work that does not depend on outside backing.

Suits the void period

  • Study, training and qualifications
  • Finishing and tidying up what is already under way
  • Health, rest and routines
  • Looking after the people and commitments you have
  • Preparing a plan to launch after the period ends
  • Reviewing money, belongings and habits

Take more care with

  • Starting a business or a big new venture
  • Large purchases made on impulse
  • Changing jobs for status rather than fit
  • Signing long contracts in a hurry
  • Making a decision only because someone pushes you

None of these is forbidden. Sanmeigaku teachers say what matters is the motive: things done because they are needed, or for other people, tend to go well; things done to force a result tend to need more care. Life does not stop for two years, and nor should you.

Tenchusatsu and marriage, moving and work

The questions people ask most. The traditional view first, then how to weigh it.

  • 婚

    Marriage in a void year

Tradition says a marriage begun in a void year or a luck-pillar void tends to take an unusual shape, such as living apart for work. Many couples marry then and do well; teachers advise a give-and-take attitude rather than delay for its own sake. Compatibility of the two charts weighs far more than the date.

  • 移

    Moving house

A move you need, for work, family or a lease, is fine. Tradition is more careful about moves made to change your luck or buy a dream home on impulse. If you can choose, move after the period, or before it begins.

  • 職

    Changing jobs

Being transferred or taking a role you are asked to do is seen as natural. A self-driven leap for title or money is the case tradition flags. Use the time to build the skills you will need when it ends.

  • 始

    Starting something new

Start-ups and big new projects are the classic “wait” item. A practical middle path: prepare during the void and launch after it, or start small and let it grow.

Tenchusatsu, kong wang and daisakkai

Three names you will meet in Japanese fortune-telling. Two are the same thing; one is a different system.

NameSystemWorked out fromLength
Tenchusatsu (天中殺)Sanmeigaku (算命学)The day pillar’s ten-day week2 years in 12, 2 months a year, 2 days in 12
Kong wang (空亡)Four Pillars (Bazi)The same, plus the year pillar’s weekThe same branches
Daisakkai (大殺界)Rokusei astrology (六星占術)A destiny number from the birthday3 years in 12

Daisakkai comes from a modern Japanese system with its own counting, so its years differ from tenchusatsu for many people. This page computes tenchusatsu and kong wang only.

Start of Spring, 23:00 births and accuracy

The details that make results differ between calculators, and what this one does.

  • 01Years start at the Start of Spring

A void year runs from the Start of Spring (立春, 3–5 February) to the day before the next one. Some calculators switch on 1 January, which is wrong by a month at each end.

  • 02Months start at the solar terms

Void months start on the exact solar term (節入り) of that year, computed from the sun’s position, not on the 1st of the month.

  • 03Born between 23:00 and midnight

Sanmeigaku changes the day at midnight. Some Four Pillars schools change it at 23:00. If your saved chart uses 23:00 and you were born after it, the result shows both types and lets you switch.

  • 04Checked against other calculators

Fifteen birthdays, including Start of Spring days, a leap day and late-evening births, give the same type, day pillar, void years and natal voids as three established Japanese calculators.

Sources

Classical texts on the void branches. The six types and the year, month and day timetable come from modern Japanese sanmeigaku.

  1. 01《三命通會》Wan Minying, Ming dynasty. Its chapter on the void (論空亡) explains how each ten-day week leaves two branches empty.
  2. 02《淵海子平》Song–Ming Four Pillars manual. Lists the six weeks and their void pairs (六甲空亡) among the symbolic stars.
  3. 03《史記》Sima Qian, Han dynasty. The chapter on tortoise divination notes that “days and branches do not match, hence the empty and the void” (日辰不全,故有孤虛), the oldest mention of the idea.
