Built from rules, so the same birth details always give the same reading.
Our rules
Stars are placed with iztro, the open-source Zi Wei engine. The birth time is corrected to true solar time first, and you can choose whether the day changes at 23:00 or midnight. Transformations use the standard Quan Shu table, and the Life master follows the Life palace branch. Some schools, such as Zhongzhou, use a different table for Geng years, which is why another calculator can differ by a star.

How to calculate a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart, step by step
The steps every Zi Wei Dou Shu calculator follows, with this chart's values filled in at each step.
- 1
Convert to the lunar calendar and the Chinese hour
The chart time is 1990-05-12 14:39: lunar month 4, day 18, in the Wei hour (未).
- 2
Place the Life palace
Count from Yin (寅) forward by the lunar month, then back by the hour. The Life palace lands in 戌 Xū.
- 3
Place the Body palace
Count forward by the month and forward by the hour. The Body palace lands in 子 Zǐ, the Fortune palace.
- 4
Give each palace a stem
Palace stems follow the year stem 庚 by the Five Tigers rule, starting from the Yin palace. The Life palace pillar is 丙戌.
- 5
Find the five-element bureau
The Na Yin of the Life palace pillar gives the Earth 5 bureau. Its number, 5, is the age at which the first decade begins.
- 6
Place Zi Wei and Tian Fu
Zi Wei's position comes from the lunar day and the bureau: it sits in 未 (Children). Tian Fu mirrors it across the Yin–Shen axis, in 酉 (Siblings).
- 7
Place the other twelve major stars
The Zi Wei group (Tian Ji, Tai Yang, Wu Qu, Tian Tong, Lian Zhen) and the Tian Fu group (Tai Yin, Tan Lang, Ju Men, Tian Xiang, Tian Liang, Qi Sha, Po Jun) follow at fixed steps from their leaders.
- 8
Apply the four transformations
The year stem 庚 turns Tai Yang · Sun into Lu, Wu Qu · Wealth General into Quan, Tai Yin · Moon into Ke and Tian Tong · Harmony into Ji.
