How the cycles work

Why each element holds its role

  • Useful godWaterPower5%

It cools and moistens a summer chart that runs hot. It checks and disciplines a Day Master with strength to spare.

As ten gods: Seven Killings · Direct Officer

  • Joyful godMetalWealth22%

It produces the useful god, Water, and keeps the remedy supplied. It puts surplus strength to work, since the Day Master spends energy controlling it.

As ten gods: Indirect Wealth · Direct Wealth

  • Taboo godFireSelf55%

It adds heat to a chart that is already too hot. It adds weight to an already strong Day Master.

As ten gods: Friend · Rob Wealth

  • Enemy godWoodResource1%

It produces the taboo god, Fire, so it keeps the problem supplied. It feeds a Day Master that already has more than enough.

  • Idle godEarthOutput17%

It checks the useful god, Water: harmless in moderation, unwelcome in excess.

What are favorable elements (喜用神)? The five roles

Favorable elements are the elements a Bazi chart needs to run well. The tradition sorts all five elements into five roles, from the one the chart needs most to the one that barely moves it. Which element lands in which role depends on your chart, not on the element.

RoleWhat it isHow it shows upExample
用神Useful godThe single element the chart needs most: the fix for its biggest imbalance.Years, decades and surroundings rich in it tend to feel easier. It is the first element to lean on.水Water: it turns Metal's pressure into support for the Wood Day Master.
喜神Joyful godThe element that backs the useful god, by producing it or doing the same job.A second helper: useful on its own, best together with the useful god.木Wood: peers that help the weak Day Master carry the load.
忌神Taboo godThe element that works against what the chart needs, often the source of the imbalance itself.Periods heavy in it tend to feel like uphill work. Go easy on it rather than cut it out.金Metal: already ruling the season, it presses hard on the Wood Day Master.
仇神Enemy godThe element that feeds the taboo god.Unhelpful at one remove: it keeps the problem supplied.土Earth: it produces Metal and soaks up Wood's effort.
閒神Idle godThe element that neither helps nor harms much in this chart. Its effect depends on what it meets; treat it as neutral.火Fire: it checks Metal but also drains the weak Wood, so it roughly cancels out.

Example column: a weak Jia Wood (甲木) Day Master born in autumn, when Metal rules.

Useful god vs joyful god: what is the difference?

The useful god (用神) is the one element that solves the chart's main problem. The joyful god (喜神) is its helper, usually the element that produces it. Together they are called 喜用神. If the useful god is the medicine, the joyful god is what helps the body take it in.

Taboo, enemy and idle gods

The taboo god (忌神) makes the main problem worse, the enemy god (仇神) feeds the taboo god, and the idle god (閒神) is whatever is left. Taboo does not mean bad luck: it means this chart already has enough of it.

How elements become ten gods

How to find your useful god: five classic methods

Readers do not pick the useful god by counting. They first ask what the chart's biggest problem is, then use one of these methods to fix it. Several can apply at once, and choosing between them is where schools differ.

  • 扶抑Computed here

    Support and restraint (扶抑用神)

The default method. A weak Day Master is supported by its resource and peers; a strong one is drained by output, spent by wealth or checked by power.

Weak 丁 Fire in winter: Wood and Fire.

  • 調候Computed here

    Climate adjustment (調候用神)

A chart born at the height of summer or the depth of winter needs cooling or warming before anything else. 《窮通寶鑑》 lists the climate need of each Day Master in each month.

庚 Metal in a scorching 午 month: Water first.

  • 通關Partly computed

    Bridging (通關用神)

When two strong elements are locked in a controlling clash, the element between them on the generating cycle turns the fight into a flow.

Metal against Wood: Water bridges them (Metal feeds Water, Water feeds Wood).

Here, balanced charts favor their thinnest elements, which is often the bridge.

  • 病藥Partly computed

    Disease and medicine (病藥用神)

Find the element doing the most harm (the disease) and the one that removes it (the medicine). The classics say a chart with a clear disease and a strong medicine is the most remarkable.

Heavy Earth burying Metal: Wood to break up the Earth.

Here, the climate and restraint steps catch the common diseases: too hot, too cold, too strong.

  • 專旺Ask a reader

Dominant and follow structures (專旺 / 從格)

When one element overwhelms the chart, the usual logic flips: you go with the dominant force instead of fighting it. These structures are rare and need a careful reading.

A rootless Day Master in a sea of Wealth follows the Wealth.

Not detected here: read about Bazi structures, or ask a reader.

  • When to ask a human reader

A rule-based calculator is a strong first pass, but it does not detect follow and dominant structures, stem combinations that transform, or a useful god that is clashed or combined away. If your chart sits near a strength boundary, or one element fills most of it, have it read in full.

    Bazi structures (格局)

The order this calculator follows

  1. 1

    Score strength

Visible stems count 1; hidden stems 1, 0.5 or 0.3 (main, middle, residual qi). The month branch counts double and the day branch 1.2×. Same element plus resource is the support share: under 45% is weak, 55% and up is strong.

  2. 2

    Check the climate

A summer month (巳午未) with 30% Fire or more is hot; a winter month (亥子丑) with 30% Water or more is cold.

  3. 3

    Choose the method

Weak: resource and peers, with the warming or cooling element first if it is one of them. Strong: cool or warm if that also drains, spends or checks; otherwise Wealth when Resource is behind the strength, Output when peers are. Balanced: climate if extreme, else the two thinnest elements.

  4. 4

    Assign the five roles

Best pick: useful god. Second pick: joyful god. Heaviest unfavorable element: taboo god. Its producer: enemy god. The rest: idle.

Why “add the element you lack” is often wrong

The most common advice online is to count the five elements and top up whatever is missing. Three real charts show why the count alone misleads.

身弱財多: more Wealth than the Day Master can carry

A 甲 Wood Day Master born in the 丑 month, surrounded by five Earth characters. Fire, Metal and Water all count zero. Fire would feed the Earth and drain the Wood further; Metal would press on it. Only Water helps, because it nourishes the Wood directly.

    A simple count says

火金水Fire, Metal and Water are missing: add all three.

    The chart actually needs

水木Water and Wood, to hold up the Day Master.

燥土缺水: Fire looks thin but runs the chart

A 己 Earth Day Master born in the 午 month, the peak of summer. Only one visible character is Fire, so a count calls Fire weak. But 午, 寅 and 戌 all hide Fire, and with the season weighed in, Fire holds 37%. This is scorched, dry Earth: it needs Water first, fed by Metal.

    A simple count says

火Fire is only 1 of 8 characters: add Fire.

    The chart actually needs

水金Water to cool and moisten, Metal to feed it.

表面缺官: the Officer that is not missing

An 乙 Wood Day Master with no Metal on the surface, so a count says "no Officer star": no career luck, no partner. Yet 丑, 丑 and 戌 all hide 辛 Metal, and the Day Master is weak at 34% support. More Metal would only press harder. It needs Water and Wood to stand up first.

    A simple count says

金No Metal (Officer) at all: add Metal.

    The chart actually needs

水木Water and Wood, so the Day Master can carry the Officer it already has.

Rule of thumb: the useful god is what the chart needs most, not what it has least.

Climate adjustment (調候用神): Day Master × birth month table

Climate adjustment (調候) asks whether a chart is too cold, hot, dry or damp for its season. The classic 《窮通寶鑑》 gives, for each Day Master in each month, the stems that set the climate right. Pick a Day Master and a month, or tap any cell of the table.

The climate useful god (調候用神) is the element that corrects the temperature and moisture of the birth season. It is read from the Day Master and the month branch, and in a very hot or very cold chart it outranks support and restraint.

How to use favorable elements: colors, directions, careers and timing

Once you know your useful and joyful gods, the tradition maps them to colors, directions, seasons and kinds of work. Treat these as gentle tilts rather than rules, and start with what costs nothing.

Favorable colors

Use your useful element's colors where they feel natural: a scarf, a phone case, a wall. Go lighter on the taboo element's colors; there is no need to ban them.

Example chartBlack, navy·White, gold

Favorable directions

Directions guide which way a desk faces, where a bed sits, or which way to look for a move or a job. They matter far less than the people and the work involved.

Careers that suit your elements

Fields tied to your useful element tend to feel like home ground. This is a lean, not a limit: a role that uses your elements inside any industry counts too.

Timing: luck pillars and years

Decades and years whose stem and branch carry your useful elements are the time to push; periods heavy in the taboo element are for consolidating. The calculator above scores your next 12 years and your current luck pillar.

Favorable elements in relationships

A partner whose chart is rich in your useful element often feels supportive, and the reverse can feel draining. It is one input among many: compare two charts properly before reading anything into it.

Traditional correspondences only, including any health associations: not medical, financial or legal advice. No product is needed to use your favorable elements.

Why do different sites give different favorable elements?

When two calculators disagree, the cause is usually one of four things.

  1. 01

    Birth time

The hour pillar is a quarter of the chart. Near a two-hour boundary, a few minutes can swap a whole pillar, and the answer with it.

  2. 02

    True solar time

Clock time is not sun time. Depending on your longitude the real solar hour can differ by 30 minutes or more, and sites that ignore it can land on the wrong hour.

  3. 03

    Counting vs weighting

Some sites count the eight visible characters; others weigh hidden stems and give the month extra force. The table below shows how far the two drift for the same chart.

  4. 04

    Method

Support and restraint, climate, structure: each school ranks them differently. A chart that is both weak and frozen can honestly get two answers.
