A Bazi chart is a snapshot of the calendar's sixty-step cycle at the moment you were born, written as eight characters. Here is how to read the one above.
Four Pillars
Your chart has four pillars: year, month, day and hour. Each pillar is a pair of characters, a heavenly stem on top and an earthly branch below, taken from the 60-step sexagenary cycle the Chinese calendar has used for over two thousand years. The year pillar is read for your roots and early life, the month pillar for career and parents, the day pillar for you and your partner, and the hour pillar for children and later life. Together they make the eight characters that give Bazi (八字) its name.

Day Master
The heavenly stem of your day pillar is your Day Master. It represents you, and every other character in the chart is read in relation to it. There are ten Day Masters, one for each stem from Jia (Yang Wood) to Gui (Yin Water). Whether your Day Master is strong or weak depends mostly on the season of your birth month and on how many characters support it, and that balance shapes the whole reading.
Five Elements
Every stem and branch belongs to one of five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water, and Water nourishes Wood. In the other direction, each element controls another. The element balance in your chart shows which forces dominate and which are missing, which is why many readings start by asking what element a chart needs.
Ten Gods
The ten gods name the relationship between your Day Master and every other stem: the element that is the same as yours (Friend, Rob Wealth), the one you produce (Eating God, Hurting Officer), the one you control (Direct and Indirect Wealth), the one that controls you (Direct Officer, Seven Killings) and the one that produces you (Direct and Indirect Resource). They translate a chart of elements into areas of life such as money, status, creativity and support.
Luck Pillars
Luck pillars are ten-year periods that follow on from your month pillar. They run forward or backward depending on your gender and on whether your birth year is yin or yang, and the age at which the first one begins depends on how many days you were born from the nearest solar term. Each luck pillar brings its own stem and branch into play with your natal chart, which is how Bazi describes the changing seasons of a life.

Clock time follows a time zone. Your chart follows the sun. We correct for your birthplace longitude and the equation of time, and show you the exact correction.

Bazi months begin at solar terms such as Start of Spring, not on the 1st. We compare your birth to the exact minute of the term, in absolute time.
Daylight saving time
Daylight saving shifts the clock but not the sun. We detect it from historical time zone data for your city and remove it automatically.
The Zi hour
Births between 23:00 and 01:00 can fall on two different days. Choose whether your day changes at 23:00 or at midnight, and compare both results.
Luck pillar start age
We count the time from your birth to the nearest solar term to find the age, to the month, when your first luck pillar begins.
