Life Master and Body Master: Lookup Tables and Common Pairs

Two stars in a Zi Wei chart get a special label. The Life Master (命主) is set by the branch of your Life Palace and stands for your inborn drive; the Body Master (身主) is set by the branch of your birth year and stands for how you act as life goes on. Neither plays the lead the way the Life Palace's major stars do, but both are useful supporting clues. This guide covers the seven Life Masters, the six Body Masters and the most searched pairs, such as Life Master Lu Cun with Body Master Tian Tong. Add your birth details and the tool finds both stars and where they sit in your chart.

What the Life Master and Body Master are

The Life Master is the star said to govern the Life Palace, and it follows the Life Palace's branch: Zi, Tan Lang; Chou and Hai, Ju Men; Yin and Xu, Lu Cun; Mao and You, Wen Qu; Chen and Shen, Lian Zhen; Si and Wei, Wu Qu; Wu, Po Jun. Look closely and these seven are the seven stars of the Northern Dipper, in order from Tan Lang to Po Jun, laid out symmetrically on either side of the Zi to Wu axis.

The Body Master follows the branch of your birth year: Zi and Wu years, Huo Xing; Chou and Wei, Tian Xiang; Yin and Shen, Tian Liang; Mao and You, Tian Tong; Chen and Xu, Wen Chang; Si and Hai, Tian Ji. Each pair of opposing branches shares one star. The Life Master leans toward inborn temperament and desire, the Body Master toward habits of action and the direction of later life. Like most modern charts, we set the Life Master by the Life Palace branch; a few methods use the birth-year branch instead, which gives different results.

The seven Life Master stars, by Life Palace branch

Find the branch of your Life Palace and you have your Life Master. Its qualities describe the underlying drive you were born with, and it is worth a glance at where that star sits in your chart, how bright it is and whether it carries a transformation.

  • Life Master Tan Lang (Life Palace in Zi)

Life Master Tan Lang means a born curiosity and appetite for the world: to experience, to have, to be liked. These people learn fast and have a gift for socialising and the arts. Aimed well, the drive is passion and ambition; overdone, it becomes wanting everything at once. Clear goals and some restraint turn Tan Lang's energy into staying power. Tan Lang belongs only to the Zi palace and Po Jun only to Wu, the two ends of the axis.

  • Life Master Ju Men (Life Palace in Chou or Hai)

The underlying drive is to find out: to question, compare and spot the flaw. Words carry weight, and frankness can stir up disputes. Ju Men transforms into 'darkness', a reminder to balance doubt with checking the facts. Put this probing mind into research, law, teaching or consulting and it becomes the root of real expertise.

  • Example

Life Master Lu Cun (Life Palace in Yin or Xu)

Lu Cun is the star of keeping and steadiness. Life Master Lu Cun values security, acts with caution, saves first and spends later, and comes across as reliable. The other side is a reluctance to let go and a fear of change that can miss chances needing a little risk. Lu Cun is not one of the fourteen major stars, and having it as Life Master does not mean it sits in your Life Palace; the two are separate questions.

  • Life Master Wen Qu (Life Palace in Mao or You)

Wen Qu rules talent, eloquence and feeling. Life Master Wen Qu is unusually sensitive to language, music, beauty and the subtleties of people, expressive and easy to like. The weak spot is mood swings and being carried along by the atmosphere. Grounding the gift in concrete work such as writing, design, performance or teaching keeps it from staying a daydream.

  • Life Master Lian Zhen (Life Palace in Chen or Shen)

Lian Zhen transforms into 'confinement', a contradictory and magnetic star. Life Master Lian Zhen is competitive and principled, loves and hates clearly, and throws itself almost obsessively into what it cares about. The energy suits fields that need discipline and rules, such as management, legal work, engineering or public service. Lian Zhen is also a secondary romance star, so personal magnetism is a natural asset, best used with clear boundaries.

  • Life Master Wu Qu (Life Palace in Si or Wei)

Wu Qu is the wealth star. Life Master Wu Qu is practical, decisive and results-driven, likes visible achievements and has a knack for managing money and resources. The flip side is hardness and a dislike of showing weakness, which can read as coldness. Pairing each decisive move with one considerate word wins Wu Qu's drive far more cooperation.

  • Life Master Po Jun (Life Palace in Wu)

Po Jun transforms into 'expenditure' and stands for breaking the old to build the new. Life Master Po Jun is not afraid of change and often goes looking for it, drawn to pioneering, starting over and untrodden paths. That courage is the engine of breakthroughs, and it has a cost: money, relationships and energy can be spent on one fresh start after another. Decide what to keep before deciding what to break.

The six Body Master stars, by birth year and zodiac sign

The Body Master follows the branch of your birth year, which is also your zodiac animal. Our Zi Wei chart changes the year at Lunar New Year, the first day of the first lunar month. If you are used to switching zodiac signs at Li Chun, the start of spring, and were born between the two dates, your result may differ from what you expect.

  • Example

Body Master Huo Xing (Rat and Horse years)

Huo Xing is one of the six malefic stars, but as Body Master it does not mean a bad chart. It means a quick, urgent pace of action: act on the idea, react fast, and under pressure charge first and think later. That burst of energy is a gift wherever speed and decisiveness count; temper and impulse are the things to watch. Sleep on important decisions and you keep the best of Huo Xing.

  • Body Master Tian Xiang (Ox and Goat years)

Tian Xiang transforms into 'the seal' and is a star of coordination and service. Body Master Tian Xiang acts with a sense of proportion and fairness, is good at bringing things together and mediating, and is often the one who wraps things up for the team. Tian Xiang is easily shaped by the people around it, so the right company brings out its best. Practise making decisions for yourself, not only looking after others.

  • Body Master Tian Liang (Tiger and Monkey years)

Tian Liang transforms into 'shelter' and carries a protective, elder quality. Body Master Tian Liang often ends up as the carer and problem-solver, grows more of a head-of-the-family air with age, and tends to receive help from seniors and mentors. The pitfalls are worrying too much and lecturing; turn care into trust and company and Tian Liang's shelter is far more welcome.

  • Body Master Tian Tong (Rabbit and Rooster years)

Tian Tong is the star of blessings and transforms into 'fortune'. Body Master Tian Tong seeks comfort, harmony and warmth in later life, knows how to live well, avoids fights and is pleasant company. The gentleness saves a lot of conflict but can also settle into complacency. Set yourself a goal that needs real effort, and Tian Tong's good fortune has somewhere to work.

  • Body Master Wen Chang (Dragon and Dog years)

Wen Chang rules learning, documents and exams. Body Master Wen Chang values order and rules, likes to prove itself through study, qualifications and writing, and cares about reputation and image. That makes for steady performance in work that needs expertise and paperwork; the thing to avoid is perfectionism that plans a lot and does little.

  • Body Master Tian Ji (Snake and Pig years)

Tian Ji transforms into 'kindness' and is the star of intelligence and strategy. Body Master Tian Ji analyses before acting, produces several plans for every problem, and relies more on experience and judgement with age. The risk is overthinking and changing course; practise deciding once you have enough information instead of waiting to be completely sure.

Common Life Master and Body Master pairs

The Life Palace branch and the birth-year branch are independent, so any of the seven Life Masters can meet any of the six Body Masters, forty-two combinations in all. Below are the pairs people search for most; read each one as inborn quality plus acquired style.

  • Life Master Lu Cun, Body Master Tian Tong (Life Palace in Yin or Xu, Rabbit or Rooster year)

The most searched pair. Lu Cun makes the inborn temperament steady and security-minded; Tian Tong makes the acquired style gentle and comfort-loving. Together they describe someone very good at both keeping and enjoying: regular habits, little appetite for risk, kind to the people close to them. The reminder is not to let stability become standstill. Taking on a challenging project now and then actually makes things flow better.

  • Life Master Lian Zhen, Body Master Tian Liang (Life Palace in Chen or Shen, Tiger or Monkey year)

Lian Zhen's competitiveness and principles meet Tian Liang's protectiveness and sense of justice, which often comes across as strict but dependable. These people set high standards for themselves and will shoulder responsibility for others, suiting management, law, medicine or public affairs. Watch the urge to control and to lecture: when you both demand and care, leave others room to choose.

  • Life Master Lian Zhen, Body Master Huo Xing (Life Palace in Chen or Shen, Rat or Horse year)

Lian Zhen is a Fire star and Huo Xing is the fire star itself, so this is the hottest pair of all: passionate, decisive, quick to act and all-in once committed, and quick to ignite as well. In competitive settings that need someone to make the call, this force is valuable. In daily life, practise cooling down; exercise is a good outlet, and in a serious clash, step away and talk once you have calmed down.

  • Life Master Ju Men, Body Master Tian Ji (Life Palace in Chou or Hai, Snake or Pig year)

Ju Men's probing plus Tian Ji's strategy make the most cerebral pair: good at analysis, research, spotting problems and offering solutions, with strong logic and words. Both stars love to think, so suspicion, second-guessing and a mind that will not switch off at night are the risks. Writing thoughts down as documents, plans or finished work gives them somewhere to land.

  • Life Master Wu Qu, Body Master Tian Ji (Life Palace in Si or Wei, Snake or Pig year)

Wu Qu executes and Tian Ji plans: one thinks it through, the other sees it through. This pair combines strategy and action and suits finance, engineering, project management or the planning stage of a new venture. The tension is that Tian Ji wants to revise while Wu Qu does not; a rule of 'finish first, then improve' keeps both speed and quality.

  • Life Master Lu Cun, Body Master Tian Ji (Life Palace in Yin or Xu, Snake or Pig year)

Lu Cun holds on and Tian Ji wants change, so this person is often torn between protecting what they have and trying something new. The upside is planning without recklessness, ideal for professions that reward long-term building; the pressure comes from thinking too long without moving. Small trial runs instead of betting everything at once suit this pair best.

Body Master vs Body Palace

The Body Master is a star, set by birth-year branch; the Body Palace is a palace, set by birth hour. Both carry the word 'body' and both relate to later life, so they get confused, but they are used quite differently. The Body Palace tells you which area of life your acquired focus falls in, such as career, money or love; the Body Master describes the style and leanings of how you act.

A concrete example: someone born in a Rabbit year in the Chen hour has Tian Tong as Body Master and the Body Palace in the Wealth Palace. Read together, the acquired focus is earning and managing money, and the way of handling it is gentle and risk-averse. The Body Palace page covers that side in full.

How to use the Life Master and Body Master in a reading

The Life Master and Body Master carry modest weight; in the order of reading they come after the Life Palace's major stars, the transformations and the three sides and four squares. They work best as a cross-check. When the Life Master matches the Life Palace's major star in character, that trait is especially pronounced; when they differ, the person has more than one side. Someone with Tian Tong in the Life Palace and Po Jun as Life Master, for example, looks mild but is not afraid of change underneath.

You can also find where the Life Master and Body Master stars themselves sit in your chart and check their brightness and transformations as extra detail for that palace. If Wu Qu is your Life Master and you were born in a Ren (壬) year, when Wu Qu takes Hua Ji, pay attention to money and decision-making in the palace Wu Qu occupies. Beyond that, do not over-read them: a Life Master or Body Master is never good or bad on its own.
