Three Sides and Four Squares: How to Read San Fang Si Zheng

Almost no palace in a Zi Wei chart is read on its own. San Fang Si Zheng (三方四正), the three sides and four squares, is the reading window for every palace: the palace itself, the palace directly opposite, and the two palaces in trine with it. Read those four together and you see the whole of that area of life. This guide shows how to find them, lists the set for each of the twelve palaces, explains which weighs most, and covers the big patterns: Sha Po Lang, the transformations and malefic stars in the set. Add your birth details and the tool shows which stars fall in the three sides and four squares of your Life Palace.

What San Fang Si Zheng means

The three sides are a palace and its two trine palaces, three points that form a triangle on the chart. The four squares add the palace opposite, for four palaces in all. Together they are the most basic frame in Zi Wei Dou Shu: whenever you read a palace, you bring in the stars of the other three as well.

Why read it this way? A palace's major star is only the lead character. The opposite palace is like a mirror across the room, showing how you face the outside world; the two trine palaces are like your left and right hands, offering support or holding you back. The star in your Life Palace matters, but whether the Wealth, Career and Travel palaces hold strong stars, Hua Lu or Hua Ji is often why two people with the same Life Palace star lead very different lives.

How to find the three sides and four squares

You only need the branch trines: Shen Zi Chen, Hai Mao Wei, Yin Wu Xu and Si You Chou. The three branches in each group sit four steps apart, and that is the trine. Add the branch six steps away, directly opposite (Zi and Wu, Chou and Wei, Yin and Shen, Mao and You, Chen and Xu, Si and Hai clash in pairs), and that is the opposite palace. A palace in Zi, for example, has its trine in Shen and Chen and its opposite in Wu, so its four palaces are Zi, Shen, Chen and Wu.

Palace names are even easier. Counting the palace itself as the first, the fifth and ninth palaces are its trines and the seventh is opposite, so the Life Palace's set is the Wealth Palace, the Career Palace and the Travel Palace opposite. The twelve palaces form four triangles: Life, Wealth and Career; Siblings, Health and Property; Spouse, Travel and Fortune; Children, Friends and Parents. The first triangle faces the third, and the second faces the fourth. Each palace's set is its own triangle plus the palace facing it in the opposite triangle.

The three sides and four squares of each palace

Each heading lists the two trine palaces first and the opposite palace last. When you read an area of life, put the stars of all four palaces together.

What weighs most: the palace itself, then opposite, then trine

The four palaces do not count equally. The palace itself is the subject: its stars, their brightness and any transformations set the keynote. The opposite palace comes next, shining straight in with influence only a little weaker, and it is the source of borrowed stars when the palace is empty. The two trine palaces come last, offering support or restraint. Think of them as background music: quieter, but considerable once it adds up.

Beyond the four, also look at the two palaces on either side, the flanking palaces. They are not part of the set, but they press right up against the palace. A matched pair of auspicious stars on either side, such as Zuo Fu and You Bi, Wen Chang and Wen Qu, or Tian Kui and Tian Yue, makes a helpful flank; Qing Yang and Tuo Luo, or Huo Xing and Ling Xing, make a malefic flank whose pressure often feels more direct than malefics in the trine. Lu Cun always has Qing Yang on one side and Tuo Luo on the other, so the palace holding Lu Cun is always flanked by them.

Common patterns: Sha Po Lang, the transformations and malefic stars

Several famous patterns are defined by the three sides and four squares themselves. These four come up most often.

  • Sha Po Lang: Qi Sha, Po Jun and Tan Lang always in trine

By the rules that place the fourteen stars, Qi Sha, Po Jun and Tan Lang are always four palaces apart and so always share one trine. If your Life Palace holds any one of them, the other two must sit in your Wealth and Career palaces: the Sha Po Lang pattern. These charts see big changes and a bold, pioneering streak, often with a few major turns in life, and a decade that reaches the Sha Po Lang triangle is often one of career changes and fresh starts. In the same way Zi Wei, Wu Qu and Lian Zhen always form a trine, and Tian Fu and Tian Xiang always share a triangle.

  • Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke and Hua Ji in the set

Any birth-year transformation in the palace or its three sides and four squares affects that palace. When Hua Lu, Hua Quan and Hua Ke all gather in the Life Palace's set, tradition calls it the gathering of the three wonders: resources, ability and reputation support each other. Hua Ji arriving marks that area's worry and work. The same transformation acts differently by position: in the palace it is your own theme, opposite it is a force shining in from outside, in the trine it pushes from the side.

  • Malefic stars in the set: Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong, Di Jie

The six malefic stars entering the set mean extra pressure, competition or setbacks in that area: Qing Yang and Tuo Luo bring conflict and delay, Huo Xing and Ling Xing impatience and sudden flare-ups, Di Kong and Di Jie plans that come to nothing and a habit of ignoring convention. Di Kong and Di Jie in the set often give unusual ideas and little interest in material things, which suits creative work. Malefics in the trine weigh less than in the palace itself, and how many there are matters more than whether any appear.

  • Auspicious stars in the set: Zuo Fu, You Bi, Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Tian Kui, Tian Yue

The six auspicious stars arriving in the set are help for that palace. Zuo Fu and You Bi mean hands and support, Wen Chang and Wen Qu learning, expression and reputation, Tian Kui and Tian Yue mentors and opportunities. A pair split across different palaces of the set still counts, since its two stars shine on each other. An ordinary major star surrounded by helpers often does better than a bright star standing alone.

A worked example: reading the set for a Life Palace in Yin

Suppose the Life Palace is in Yin with Zi Wei and Tian Fu, and the person was born in a Jia (甲) year. Step one, the palace itself: Zi Wei is Wang in Yin and Tian Fu Miao, together steady and opinionated, attentive to status and security. Step two, the opposite Travel Palace in Shen holds a Miao Qi Sha, so a strong push outward shines in from across the chart. This is no mere caretaker; the drive to make a mark away from home is real.

Step three, the trine: the Wealth Palace in Xu holds a Miao Wu Qu, strong earning power; the Career Palace in Wu holds Lian Zhen (Ping) and Tian Xiang (Miao), suited to management or professional work inside a system. Step four, the transformations: in a Jia year Lian Zhen takes Hua Lu in the Career Palace and Wu Qu takes Hua Ke in the Wealth Palace, so both enter the Life Palace's set. Po Jun's Hua Quan in the Spouse Palace and Tai Yang's Hua Ji in the Children Palace sit outside it and are read separately.

Last, the flanks. In a Jia year Lu Cun sits in Yin, right in the Life Palace, with Qing Yang in Mao and Tuo Luo in Chou on either side, so the Life Palace is flanked by the pair. That suggests secure resources but pressure from the people closest to you, and decisions that can feel hemmed in. Step by step, the four palaces and their two neighbours add up to a full outline of the chart.
