Starting from the Life Palace, they cover siblings, partner, children, money, health, life away from home, friends, career, home, inner life and parents. This page explains the order of the palaces and how to remember it, a simple way to group them and one line on each, then the tools for reading palaces: three sides and four squares, the Body Palace, palace stems and derived palaces. Add your birth details to see where your Life Palace sits and what each palace holds.

What are the 12 palaces?
The palaces are the coordinate system of Zi Wei Dou Shu. The twelve boxes around the chart each carry an earthly branch and never move. Your birth month and hour pick the branch of the Life Palace, and the other eleven palaces follow from there, so anyone's Life Palace can sit in any box from Zi to Hai: the names travel, the boxes stay.
Each palace governs one area of life, and the stars and transformations in it describe that area. No palace is good or bad in itself, and the Life Palace is not automatically more important than the Friends Palace. Think of a house with twelve rooms: you want to know who lives in each, and how the rooms connect.

The order of the 12 palaces and how to remember it
From the Life Palace the palaces run counter-clockwise: Life, Siblings, Spouse, Children, Wealth, Health, Travel, Friends, Career, Property, Fortune, Parents. Chinese students chant one character for each, 命兄夫子財疾遷友官田福父, and once it sticks you can count any palace's neighbours instantly. Some books use other names: the Friends Palace is also the Servants Palace (僕役宮), the Career Palace the Business Palace (事業宮), and the Parents Palace the Appearance or Documents Palace.
To find the Life Palace, start the first lunar month at the Yin box and count clockwise to your birth month; from that box, start the Zi hour and count counter-clockwise to your birth hour. Born at the Yin hour in the third month? Yin, Mao and Chen take the first three months, then Zi falls on Chen, Chou on Mao and Yin on Yin, so the Life Palace is in Yin.
The palaces also face each other in six lines: Life and Travel, Siblings and Friends, Spouse and Career, Children and Property, Wealth and Fortune, Health and Parents. The Flying Stars school leans on these lines because both ends tend to stir together; on the Spouse and Career line, trouble at work and trouble in love often arrive as a pair.
Grouping the 12 palaces: self, people and environment
Twelve palaces are a lot to learn at once, so start with three groups. This is a study aid, not a rule from the classics.
Self: Life, Wealth, Career, Travel
These four describe you: character, how you earn, how you work and how you come across outside. They are exactly the Life Palace's three sides and four squares, so you already read them together.
People: Siblings, Spouse, Children, Friends, Parents
These five cover the people around you: siblings and peers, partner, children and juniors, friends and colleagues, parents and seniors. Their stars show how the relationship looks from your side; the other person's own chart tells their story.
Environment: Health, Property, Fortune
These three are what carries you: the body, the home and the inner life. They never appear on a business card, yet they decide whether you can recover when you are worn out.

- 父母Parents PalaceParents Palace: parents, elders and bosses, plus documents, certificates and qualifications.
Three sides and four squares: never read one box alone
Every palace is read with its opposite and its two trine palaces; the four together are its three sides and four squares. Counting the palace itself as the first, the fifth and ninth palaces are the trines and the seventh is the opposite. For the Children Palace, the trines are Friends and Parents and the opposite is Property, which together describe children, juniors and family life.
This splits the twelve palaces into four trines: Life, Wealth and Career; Siblings, Health and Property; Spouse, Travel and Fortune; Children, Friends and Parents. The stars in each trine echo each other. For how auspicious stars, malefic stars and transformations add up across the four palaces, see the three sides and four squares guide.
The Body Palace: only six possible places
The Body Palace is not a thirteenth palace but a marker laid over one of the twelve, set by birth hour. The Zi or Wu hour puts it in the Life Palace itself, Chou or Wei in Fortune, Yin or Shen in Career, Mao or You in Travel, Chen or Xu in Wealth, and Si or Hai in Spouse. Siblings, Children, Health, Friends, Property and Parents can never hold it.
The usual rule of thumb is that the Life Palace shows what you are born with and the Body Palace what you grow into: the area you put more and more into after middle age. The Body Palace guide covers how it works with the Life Palace and how to read an empty Body Palace.
Palace stems: the five-tiger rule and flying transformations
Besides its branch, each palace carries a heavenly stem. The birth-year stem sets the stem of the Yin box by the five-tiger rule, and the rest follow clockwise: Jia and Ji years start the Yin box with Bing; Yi and Geng with Wu (戊); Bing and Xin with Geng; Ding and Ren with Ren; Wu (戊) and Gui with Jia. Ten stems over twelve boxes means Zi repeats the stem of Yin and Chou repeats the stem of Mao. As always, the year stem changes at Lunar New Year.
Palace stems do three jobs. The Life Palace stem and branch give the element bureau through nayin. The palace whose stem matches the year stem, leaving out Zi and Chou, is the Origin Palace. Most important, every stem transforms four stars, which then fly into whichever palaces hold them: the flying transformations. A palace with a Jia stem, for example, sends Hua Lu to Lian Zhen, Hua Quan to Po Jun, Hua Ke to Wu Qu and Hua Ji to Tai Yang; when the star sits in that same palace it is called self-transformation. Tap any palace in our chart to see where its stem flies.
Derived palaces: treating another palace as the Life Palace
A derived palace treats one palace as the Life Palace of another person or matter and counts the twelve again. The most intuitive case is a sibling: take the Siblings Palace as your sibling's Life Palace, count on to the third palace for their Spouse Palace, and you land on your own Children Palace. So for a brother's or sister's marriage, look at your Children Palace.
Derived palaces open up many layers of meaning, but each turn takes you a step further from yourself, so read the palaces themselves first. Each palace guide lists what that palace becomes from the other palaces' point of view.
Decades and years have their own twelve palaces
The natal twelve palaces are your base for life; time lays new layers on top. The decade moves one palace every ten years, starting from the Life Palace at the age given by the bureau number, clockwise for yang-year men and yin-year women and counter-clockwise for yin-year men and yang-year women. Wherever the decade sits becomes the decade Life Palace, a full set of decade palaces follows from it, and that palace's stem supplies ten years of decade transformations.
The year layer follows the year's branch. 2026 is a Bing Wu year, so the year Life Palace sits in the Wu box, a fresh set of year palaces follows, and the Bing stem gives the year transformations: Tian Tong Hua Lu, Tian Ji Hua Quan, Wen Chang Hua Ke and Lian Zhen Hua Ji. Stack the three: natal for the foundation, decade for the stage of life, year for now. When the natal, decade and year Wealth palaces all receive Hua Lu at once, money is the clear theme of that year.
