The Fire Element in Bazi: Personality, Colors and Balance

Bing and Ding, summer and the south: how Fire works in a chart, what it says about personality, and how to handle a chart that is too hot or too cold.

Updated October 17, 2026

Fire (火, huǒ) is the element of warmth and visibility. In Bazi it appears as the stems Bing 丙 and Ding 丁 and the branches Si 巳 and Wu 午; it peaks in summer, faces south and is colored red. Fire people are warm, expressive and quick. Too much Fire burns out, too little leaves a chart cold, and whether a chart needs more Fire depends on its favorable elements and, for winter births, on the cold.

Missing, weak or strong: how Fire is measured

  1. 1

Count: how many of the eight visible characters (four stems, four branches) are Fire. Quick, but it ignores what the branches hide.

  2. 2

Share: stems plus hidden stems, weighted (main qi 1, middle 0.5, residual 0.3). This is the percentage shown here, and what most sites mean by missing Fire.

  3. 3

Strength: the share again, with the birth month counted double, because the season decides whether Fire is thriving or dormant. The favorable elements calculator works from this.

What the Fire element means in Bazi

The classics define each element by the way it moves. For Fire, its two stems, its season and the branches that hold it all follow from that movement.

The classical definition

火曰炎上,炎上作苦

Fire flames upward, and what flames upward turns bitter. Fire always rises and spreads light and heat. It can't be held still, which is the source of both its brilliance and its restlessness.

《尚書·洪範》

Fire is the sun at noon and the lamp at night: light, heat and movement upward. It stands for expression, recognition, enthusiasm and ritual. Its virtue is propriety (禮), the forms that let people meet warmly. Fire makes things visible, and it also consumes what it touches.

Fire through the year

Fire is born in spring, when Wood fuels it. It rules summer, the 巳 and 午 months from early May to early July; it pours itself into Earth in the months that close each season; it struggles against Metal in autumn; and it is weakest in winter, when Water puts it out. Summer Fire is fierce and wants cooling; winter Fire is precious and wants feeding.

丙 Bǐng

Bing 丙 is the sun: bright, generous and impossible to ignore. It warms everything without choosing, which makes Bing open-handed and public. Bing is strong enough to face frost and snow, but it can overwhelm, and it turns shy before the soft Metal of 辛.

丁 Dīng

Ding 丁 is the candle, the lamp and starlight: a small, steady flame that lights a room rather than the world. It stands for focus, close warmth and refinement. Ding looks gentle and burns bright inside; with Wood to feed it, its light lasts.

Where Fire sits in a Bazi chart

Fire can appear as a stem, as a branch, or hidden inside a branch. Hidden Fire counts too, which is why a chart with no visible Fire character is rarely missing it altogether.

Fire element personality: strengths, blind spots, love and work

People with a Fire Day Master (丙 or 丁), or with Fire leading their chart, tend to be warm, lively and expressive. They light up a room and want to be seen doing something that matters.

Strengths

  • Warm, open and generous
  • Expressive: talks, performs, persuades
  • Enthusiastic; lifts the mood of a group
  • Quick to act and to spot opportunities
  • Courteous and attentive to how people feel

Shadow side

  • Impatient; burns hot, then cools fast
  • Overpromises when excited
  • Needs attention and appreciation
  • Quick temper, quickly forgiven
  • Can skip details and follow-through

Love

Fire loves openly and romantically: compliments, gestures, time in the spotlight together. Passion comes easily; staying power is the test. Fire needs a partner who keeps the warmth going without fanning every flare-up.

Career

Fire thrives where people can see the work: media, marketing, performance, teaching from a stage, hospitality, beauty and anything to do with energy and light. It wilts in isolated, repetitive jobs with no audience and no feedback.

Fire person: defined by the Day Master or the birth year?

A Fire person (火命) can mean two things. In Bazi it means your Day Master, the stem of your birth day, is Bing or Ding Fire, and that is what this page's personality section describes. Folk calendars use the birth year's nayin (納音) instead, and the two often disagree: 1986 (丙寅) is 爐中火, Fire by nayin, but 2026, the 丙午 fire-horse year, has the nayin 天河水, which is Water.

A Bazi year starts at the Start of Spring (around 4 February), so births in January and early February belong to the previous year.

Too much Fire, weak Fire and missing Fire

Each case reads differently. Pick one to see how it shows in a chart, the classical line on it and what tends to help.

Too much Fire

Signs in a chart

  • Born in summer (巳 or 午 month), when Fire rules
  • Several 丙 or 丁 stems, or 巳 and 午 together
  • A complete Fire frame: 寅午戌 or 巳午未
  • Little Water to cool it; the chart reads hot and dry
強火得土,方止其焰

Strong Fire needs Earth; only then is its blaze contained.

Traditional maxim

What it means

Too much Fire is a summer noon with no shade. Energy and charisma run high, and so do impatience, overstatement and burnout. A summer chart heavy in Fire also needs cooling for its own sake: the seasonal adjustment (調候) of classical Bazi. If Fire dominates completely, the chart may follow it as the Fire-dominant structure 炎上格 (flaming upward).

What helps

Earth vents Fire into something solid: routines, craft, finished work. Water cools it, especially in a summer chart: rest, reflection, quiet. Metal gives Fire something to forge, such as budgets and concrete targets. Avoid extra Wood, which only adds fuel.

Missing Fire in your Bazi? How to add Fire, and what to do with too much

These are the traditional Fire correspondences people use to bring the element into daily life. Read the note first.

Missing Fire doesn't mean you must add Fire

What a chart needs comes from its favorable elements (喜用神), not from a count. A chart without Fire can be well balanced, and adding Fire to a chart that dislikes it tips it further off. Check your favorable elements first, and use the list below only if Fire is among them.

Too much Fire? How to calm it

Let Earth ground it: steady routines, hands-on craft, finishing what you start. Cool it with Water: sleep, quiet time, time near water, dark blues. Give it Metal to work on: budgets and clear targets. Cut back on red, late nights and overstimulation.

Fire and the body: traditional correspondences

Traditional Chinese medicine pairs Fire with the heart and small intestine, the tongue, the blood vessels, heat and the emotion of joy and over-excitement. The classics read extreme Fire as a cue to watch these areas. In practice it is a reminder to rest, cool down and keep excitement in proportion.

Traditional symbolism only, not medical advice. A Bazi chart can't diagnose anything; see a doctor about any health concern.

When is Fire strongest? Fire through the twelve months

The birth month is the season, and the season sets each element's strength: prosperous (旺), supported (相), resting (休), confined (囚) or dormant (死). Tap a month on the ring.

  • 旺 Prosperous巳午
  • 相 Supported寅卯
  • 休 Resting辰未戌丑
  • 囚 Confined申酉
  • 死 Dormant亥子

Fire is prosperous in 巳 and 午 (summer), supported in 寅 and 卯 (spring), resting in the Earth months 辰, 未, 戌 and 丑, confined in 申 and 酉 (autumn) and dormant in 亥 and 子 (winter). That is why a Fire Day Master born in winter usually needs Wood and Fire, while one born in summer usually needs Water and Earth.

Fire and the other four elements

Every element is fed by one, feeds one, controls one and is controlled by one. Each relation helps in moderation and hurts in excess, and the old maxims say exactly how.

  • 火賴木生,木多火熾

Fire relies on Wood for life, but too much Wood makes the Fire rage.

  • 火能剋金,金多火熄

Fire can control Metal, but too much Metal puts the Fire out.

Fire melts Metal and shapes it in the forge. This is how Fire manages and earns, turning raw material into results. Faced with a mass of Metal, though, a small Fire goes out.
