The Direct Officer structure in BaziHow it forms, what it needs, personality and a real example

Updated October 15, 2026

The Direct Officer structure (正官格) forms when the Direct Officer among the month branch's hidden stems shows on a heavenly stem, or when the month branch's main qi is the Direct Officer. The Officer controls the Day Master with the opposite yin or yang, a measured discipline, so this structure is upright, trustworthy and careful of its name. The classics rank it first of the four auspicious structures.

How the Direct Officer structure forms

Start with the month branch. If its hidden Direct Officer shows on the year, month or hour stem, the structure is clear; if the main qi is the Officer and nothing else shows, it still counts. The Officer should be 'clean': no Seven Killings mixed in and no Hurting Officer attacking it.

What the Direct Officer structure needs

It loves Wealth and Resource at its side: Wealth feeds the Officer so standing has money behind it, and the Officer feeds Resource, which feeds you ('Officer and Resource produce each other'). The Day Master needs some strength to carry the Officer; when weak, Resource matters most.

What breaks the Direct Officer structure, and the remedies

Its great fear is Hurting Officer meeting the Officer: disputes, legal trouble and career setbacks. Next is mixing with Seven Killings, and the Officer being combined away or clashed. Resource restraining Hurting Officer, or Seven Killings combined away, can rescue it.

Direct Officer structure personality

People with this structure are upright, reliable and orderly, care about reputation and propriety, carry responsibility well and win the trust of bosses and elders. Their weak side: rigidity, caution, fear of mistakes and too much concern with others' opinions.

Careers for the Direct Officer structure

Government, large companies, law, management, finance and education: structured places with a ladder to climb. Steady progress brings steady promotion, and middle age usually brings position and standing.

The Direct Officer structure in men's and women's charts

Men

A man with this structure values career and reputation, works steadily and thrives in institutions; ties with daughters and bosses are good. If Hurting Officer is strong in his chart, he should watch his words with superiors.

Women

In a woman's chart the Direct Officer is the husband star: a husband who is upright and responsible, and a stable marriage. She is dignified and family-minded. If Hurting Officer strikes the Officer or Officer and Seven Killings mix, love is bumpier and careful choice and talk matter.

Direct Officer structure with a strong or weak Day Master

A strong Day Master makes the best use of it: able to carry the Officer, it welcomes Wealth and Officer and gains both career and honor. A weak Day Master finds the Officer heavy and stressful: Resource to transform the Officer and Peers to support you come first, and more Wealth feeding the Officer is unwelcome.
