Parents Palace in Zi Wei Dou Shu: Elders, Documents and the 14 Stars
The Parents Palace (父母宮) is the last of the twelve palaces. It describes your bond with your parents and elders, and by extension with teachers, bosses, government offices and paperwork such as exams, licences and contracts, which is why it is also called the Looks Palace or the Documents Palace. It sits opposite the Health Palace, with the Children and Friends palaces in trine, and Tian Liang is its ruling star. Read on for the method, the fourteen major stars in this palace, what an empty one means and how the transformations land here. Add your birth details to read your own.

What the Parents Palace means
Counting from the Life Palace, the Parents Palace is the twelfth, sitting right beside the Life Palace. It covers how you were cared for as a child, how strict the household was, how well you talk with your parents and how close you stay as an adult. Brothers and sisters share parents but not this palace, because it records how you, this particular child, experience them.
Beyond parents, it covers anyone one level above you: teachers, managers, employers and public authorities. Tian Liang rules the palace, Tai Yang is the father star and Tai Yin the mother star; where these three sit is always part of reading your bond with elders.
How to read the Parents Palace in four steps
This palace holds everything from family to official forms, so take it step by step.
- 1
Major starsthe star here describes the impression parents and elders leave on you. If the palace is empty, borrow the Health Palace stars opposite.
- 2
Father, mother and ruler: check where Tai Yang, Tai Yin and Tian Liang sit and how bright they are to fill in each parent.
- 3
Three sides, four squares and transformations: read Health, Children and Friends with it, and look for a birth-year Hua Ji or Hua Ke here, which also shapes exams and paperwork.
- 4
Timingdecades or years that trigger this palace often bring a change with parents, a new boss, a licence exam or an important document.
The Health Palace opposite and the trine
The Health Palace sits opposite, forming the parents and health axis. Parents give you your body, your looks and your constitution, so tradition reads inheritance along this line. By derived palaces the Parents Palace is the Health Palace's Travel Palace, the body as it appears to others, which is where the name Looks Palace comes from. For real family health patterns, rely on your family's medical history and a doctor.
The trine palaces are Children and Friends. Children is the next generation, and with Parents above it the two link a family line. Friends covers peers and staff, and with bosses in the Parents Palace they map your place in any organisation. Parents, Health, Children and Friends together are its three sides and four squares.
The 14 major stars in the Parents Palace
Read each star as your parents' character and style of upbringing, or as how you get on with bosses. Fixed pairings with the Life Palace are noted, for example Tian Xiang in the Life Palace always puts Tian Liang here.
- 紫微
Zi Wei in the Parents Palace
Zi Wei here means Tian Ji holds your Life Palace, like a strategist who always stands beside a ruler. Parents and elders are authoritative and opinionated, house rules are strict and expectations high, and bosses usually hold real power; you do best under a capable leader. With Tian Fu in Yin or Shen the family base is solid; with Po Jun in Chou or Wei your values clash; with Tan Lang in Mao or You elders are talented and sociable.
Zi Wei guide - 天機
Tian Ji in the Parents Palace
Quick-minded parents with plenty of ideas, who worry on your behalf and ring with a list of reminders. Childhood may have brought moves, school changes or parents switching jobs. With Tian Liang in Chen or Xu your parents teach and explain; with Ju Men in Mao or You discussion turns into debate; with Tai Yin in Yin or Shen a mother's care stands out. You may also change managers more often than most.
Tian Ji guide - 太陽
Tai Yang in the Parents Palace
The father star in the Parents Palace makes a father or older man a strong influence and often a role model; every Wu Qu Life Palace has it. Bright from Yin to Wu, he carries responsibility and bosses promote you; fallen in Zi or Hai, he works hard and is often away, so reach out first. With Tai Yin in Chou or Wei both parent stars share the palace: the mother leads in Chou, the father in Wei.
Tai Yang guide - 武曲
Wu Qu in the Parents Palace
An easy-going child with practical, demanding parents: Tian Tong in the Life Palace guarantees Wu Qu here. They show love with money, resources and plans rather than sweet words, and your money habits were probably learned at home. Bosses judge by results. With Qi Sha in Mao or You discipline is blunt and talk is short; with Tian Fu in Zi or Wu the family is a reliable backstop; with Po Jun or Tan Lang family finances swing more.
Wu Qu guide - 天同
Tian Tong in the Parents Palace
Gentle, forgiving parents and little pressure at home, so you could grow at your own pace; the catch is learning to set goals for yourself later. Tian Tong improves with time, and the bond often grows warmer with age. With Tian Liang in Yin or Shen elders help the most; with Ju Men in Chou or Wei misunderstandings pile up, so speak plainly; with Tai Yin in Zi or Wu the home feels soft and affectionate.
Tian Tong guide - 廉貞
Lian Zhen in the Parents PalaceIn the example
Parents with strong personalities and high standards, close but charged. Lian Zhen also governs rules and legal matters, so from the documents angle, keep contracts, legal papers and dealings with the authorities clean and recorded. With Qi Sha in Chou or Wei parents are forceful; with Po Jun in Mao or You your values differ widely; with Tan Lang in Si or Hai elders are sociable, as much rivals as friends.
Lian Zhen guide - 天府
Tian Fu in the Parents Palace
Steady, conservative parents who care about face, and a family safety net that lets you take risks elsewhere. Bosses like systems, and company rules are clear. With Tian Fu here the Health Palace opposite always holds Qi Sha and the Friends Palace holds Tian Xiang: your backing is steady even when your own pace is hard. With Zi Wei in Yin or Shen elders give the most practical support.
Tian Fu guide - 太陰
Tai Yin in the Parents Palace
Tai Yin is the mother star, so a mother or older woman shapes you most, always checking that you have eaten and dressed warmly. A Tian Fu Life Palace always brings it, a moon guarding the vault. Bright in Hai, Zi and Chou, she is gentle and strong; fallen in Mao, Chen and Si, she works hard, or the two of you feel deeply but rarely say it. A simple thank-you goes a long way.
Tai Yin guide - 貪狼
Tan Lang in the Parents PalaceIn the example
You are quiet and gentle, your parents talented and sociable, with guests often at home; a Tai Yin Life Palace fixes Tan Lang here. Each parent has their own life, so it feels more like friendship. With Tan Lang here the Children and Friends palaces always hold Po Jun and Qi Sha, so neither generation sits still. Bosses like your talents and dinners come often; learn to say no now and then.
Tan Lang guide - 巨門
Ju Men in the Parents Palace
Parents talk a lot and remind you often, and generation gaps are the usual theme, especially for Tan Lang Life Palace people, whose Parents Palace always holds Ju Men. From the documents angle, wording in contracts can cause disputes, so get everything in writing. When Ju Men is bright, in Zi, Wu, Si or Hai or beside Tai Yang or Tian Ji, elders are worldly and teach you much; fallen in Chen or Xu, be specific with bosses.
Ju Men guide - 天相
Tian Xiang in the Parents Palace
You speak bluntly and parents or bosses smooth things over; with Ju Men in the Life Palace, Tian Xiang is fixed here. The seal star suits the documents palace, so exams, licences and applications usually go well. It is always flanked by Tian Liang in the Fortune Palace and Ju Men in your Life Palace; in a Ding year Ju Men takes Hua Ji, and with Qing Yang in the Fortune Palace the seal is squeezed. Po Jun always sits opposite in the Health Palace.
Tian Xiang guide - 天梁
Tian Liang in the Parents Palace
Tian Liang rules this palace, and Tian Xiang in the Life Palace always puts it here. Elders are an umbrella: parents, teachers or bosses give advice and protection at key moments, though protection comes with lectures. Bright in Zi or Wu the shelter is deepest; fallen in Si or Hai it is thinner and you carry more yourself. With Tai Yang in Mao or You a father's influence runs especially deep.
Tian Liang guide - 七殺
Qi Sha in the Parents Palace
If Tian Liang sits in your Life Palace, Qi Sha is guaranteed here and Tian Fu faces it from the Health Palace. You were born mature and caring, perhaps because forceful, direct parents taught you early to be your own elder, and many with this placement leave home young. At work you meet strong bosses; let results do the talking. With Zi Wei in Si or Hai elders are stern but dependable.
Qi Sha guide - 破軍
Po Jun in the Parents Palace
Two generations collide over values, and family life changes often with moves and parents' jobs, so you go your own way early. Tian Xiang always sits opposite in the Health Palace. From the documents angle, papers need several revisions and exams an extra round of preparation. Bright in Zi or Wu, clashes end in better understanding; fallen in Mao or You, patience matters most.
Po Jun guide
An empty Parents Palace
With no major star here, read the Health Palace stars opposite. An empty Parents Palace does not mean a weak bond with your parents. It means the bond is flexible: grandparents or relatives may have raised you, or the distance between you shifts across life stages. Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Hua Ke, Hua Ji, Tian Kui and Tian Yue inside the palace carry extra weight.
An empty palace in Si or Hai always borrows Lian Zhen and Tan Lang, in Chen or Xu Tian Ji and Tian Liang, and in Chou or Wei Tai Yang with Tai Yin, Tian Tong with Ju Men, or Wu Qu with Tan Lang. An empty Parents Palace in Chou or Wei facing Tai Yang and Tai Yin, for example, lets both parent stars shine in from the Health Palace, and both parents tend to weigh equally.
The four transformations in the Parents Palace
Transformations here affect both your bond with elders and your luck with paperwork. Birth-year transformations count the year from Lunar New Year, not from January 1 or Li Chun.
祿Hua Lu in the Parents Palace
Good luck with elders: parents give resources, bosses appreciate you, and loans, grants and applications go smoothly.
Hua Lu explained權Hua Quan in the Parents Palace
Parents who manage a lot and clear house rules; at work you are often trusted with documents and procedures.
Hua Quan explained科Hua Ke in the Parents Palace
The best sign for exams and licences, with smooth paperwork; a parent or teacher with learning and a good name is your model.
Hua Ke explained忌Hua Ji in the Parents Palace
Unfinished business with parents or bosses, in communication, expectations or care duties, and paperwork prone to errors. It is not about being a bad child or having bad parents; it asks you to check twice and speak up.
Hua Ji explained
Minor stars, Lu Cun and Tian Ma in the Parents Palace
Wen Chang and Wen Qu here help exams and documents, and parents value education; Tian Kui and Tian Yue are senior helpers, teachers or managers who promote you; Zuo Fu and You Bi mean other elders help besides your parents. Lu Cun here means a thrifty, steady family that gives you a basic safety net. Lu Cun is always flanked by Qing Yang and Tuo Luo, so Tuo Luo then sits in your Life Palace and Qing Yang in the Fortune Palace, and you may carry your elders' pressure.
Among the malefic stars, Qing Yang and Tuo Luo bring disagreements with elders and delayed paperwork, Huo Xing and Ling Xing clashes that flare and pass, and Di Kong and Di Jie parents whose views differ sharply from yours, or plans for exams and licences that fall through. Tian Ma means parents who travel for work, or leaving home early to study or work. These are hints for how to relate; a different way of talking often solves most of it.
Derived palaces: your partner's home, your children's career
Make another palace the starting point and the Parents Palace takes on new roles. Counting from the Spouse Palace, it is your partner's Property Palace, their home: if you live with or often visit your partner's family, how it feels shows here. Counting from the Children Palace, it is your children's Career Palace, so their studies and work can be read here too.
It is also the Health Palace's Travel Palace, one source of the name Looks Palace; the Friends Palace's Wealth Palace, which tradition uses for friends' finances and money between you; and the Career Palace's Children Palace, covering juniors, protégés and the results you produce at work.
Also called the Looks Palace and the Documents Palace
Why the Looks Palace? First, inheritance: features, build and complexion mostly come from your parents. Second, structure: the palace sits opposite the Health Palace, which is the body, so it shows the body as others see it. Tradition therefore also read looks and bearing here, and today it extends to your public image and first impressions.
The Documents Palace label is more practical. Exams, degrees, licences, contracts, official letters, seals and dealings with government offices and banks are all read here, as are the people and bodies above you: employers, managers, teachers and public authorities. Hua Ke, Wen Chang, Wen Qu or Tian Xiang here usually mean smooth paperwork; with Hua Ji or a fallen Ju Men, read twice before you sign.
Reading your father and your mother
The Parents Palace is shared by both parents, so tradition offers two sets of clues to separate them. The first is stars: Tai Yang is the father star and Tai Yin the mother star. See which palace each occupies, how bright it is and whether it takes Hua Ji: people born in a Jia year have Tai Yang Hua Ji, those born in a Yi year Tai Yin Hua Ji, each pointing to a bond that needs care.
The second is derived palaces. Start from the Parents Palace and count to its Spouse Palace and you land on your Siblings Palace, so one school reads the father in the Parents Palace and the mother in the Siblings Palace. The same Siblings Palace is also your partner's Parents Palace, your in-laws. Reading the Parents Palace, Siblings Palace, Tai Yang and Tai Yin together is more reliable than any one alone.
When a decade or year reaches the Parents Palace
A ten-year period in the Parents Palace makes elders and institutions the theme: caring for parents, adjusting to managers, licence exams, or paperwork such as property transfers. For a single year, count to the twelfth palace from the year's Life Palace for that year's luck with elders and documents. When the year's Hua Ji and your birth Hua Ji both land in or clash with the Parents Palace, known as a double Hua Ji, take extra care with contracts, IDs and family matters.
