Travel Palace in Zi Wei Dou Shu: Life Away from Home and the 14 Stars
The Travel Palace (遷移宮) sits opposite the Life Palace and shows who you become outside familiar surroundings: opportunities away from home, trips and moves, building a life in another city or country, and the impression you make at first sight. The Life Palace is how you see yourself; the Travel Palace is how the world receives you. Below is what the palace covers, then the fourteen major stars here, an empty Travel Palace, the transformations and minor stars. Add your birth details to see how your own Travel and Life palaces pull on each other.

What the Travel Palace means and what it shows
The Travel Palace is the seventh from the Life Palace and sits directly opposite it. It covers everything that happens once you walk out of the door: commuting, business trips, holidays, moving house, postings abroad, study and emigration, plus how you come across among strangers and the openings waiting outside. Tradition says people with a strong Travel Palace meet helpers once they leave home.
It also shows how the world answers you. The Life Palace is your nature; the Travel Palace is how the environment responds when that nature goes out into the world. Some people are quiet at home and thrive in public, others the reverse. If people keep telling you that you are not what they expected, the explanation is often here.
How to read the Travel Palace in four steps
The Travel Palace never works without the Life Palace, so read the two as a pair, in this order.
- 1
Major stars and brightness: they set the tone of your life away from home and the settings you tend to meet. If the palace is empty, borrow the stars of the Life Palace.
- 2
The life and travel axis and the trine: the Life Palace opposite is your nature, and the Spouse and Fortune palaces in trine are the bonds you form away from home and your state of mind on the road.
- 3
Transformationssee whether Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke or Hua Ji land here or in the Life Palace, and whether going out adds to your life or asks more of you.
- 4
Timingwhen a decade or year reaches the Travel Palace, or transformations activate it, moves, postings and trips abroad tend to happen.
The Life Palace opposite and the trine
The Life Palace is the opposite palace, and the pair forms the life and travel axis, the most important line in the chart. A weak Life Palace with strong Travel stars traditionally favours building your life elsewhere, in another city or in busy public settings; a strong Life Palace with weak Travel stars favours putting down roots where you are. Malefic stars on both ends ask for extra care with transport and safety.
The trine palaces are Spouse and Fortune. Here the Spouse Palace stands for close bonds formed away from home and often shows whether you met your partner on a trip or through work; the Fortune Palace is your mood on the road. With a calm Fortune Palace travel recharges you; with a restless one it wears you out. Those four palaces, read together, are the Travel Palace's three sides and four squares.
The 14 major stars in the Travel Palace
The major star here decides how you appear away from home, and also fixes what sits in your Life Palace opposite. Each entry notes the placements the chart structure always brings with it.
- 紫微
Zi Wei in the Travel Palace
Walk into a room of strangers and people assume you are the one who decides: that is Zi Wei in the Travel Palace, and senior figures often open doors for you. Lian Zhen always sits in the Spouse Palace. The Life Palace opposite holds Tan Lang, Tian Xiang, Qi Sha, Po Jun or Tian Fu depending on the branch, or is empty in Mao and You and borrows Zi Wei with Tan Lang. With Tian Fu or Tian Xiang alongside, you shine more out in the world than at home.
Zi Wei guide - 天機
Tian Ji in the Travel Palace
Business trips, long commutes, new cities: Tian Ji in the Travel Palace is movement in its purest form, with a quick, well-informed manner wherever you go. Zi Wei always sits in the Health Palace, so all the running around rarely breaks you. When Tian Ji shares this palace with Tai Yin, Ju Men or Tian Liang, your Life Palace is empty and borrows these stars back, which is why such people often find their direction only after leaving home.
Tian Ji guide - 太陽
Tai Yang in the Travel PalaceIn the example
The more people around, the bigger your stage. Tai Yang away from home wants an audience, so public-facing roles, sales and public service suit you. Tian Tong always sits in the Career Palace, meaning the work itself has to be enjoyable to last. Tai Yang is brightest from Yin to Wu, where a reputation builds quickly. With Tai Yin, Ju Men or Tian Liang alongside, the Life Palace is empty and your public image can be sharper than the private you.
Tai Yang guide - 武曲
Wu Qu in the Travel Palace
Deals, negotiations and hands-on work in another city often pay better than staying put, and tradition sees Wu Qu in the Travel Palace as a placement that makes money after leaving home. Zi Wei always sits in the Spouse Palace, pointing to a partner with weight and opinions. With Tian Fu (Zi and Wu) the Life Palace holds Qi Sha; with Tan Lang (Chou and Wei) it is empty. Either way, the further you go, the more solid the gains.
Wu Qu guide - 天同
Tian Tong in the Travel Palace
Strangers help, hosts look after you and trips tend to go smoothly: Tian Tong makes you easy to like on the road. Tai Yang always sits in the Wealth Palace, so income comes from being visible and serving others. With Tai Yin, Ju Men or Tian Liang alongside, your Life Palace is empty: perhaps a little lazy at home, but pushed to grow once the outside world demands it.
Tian Tong guide - 廉貞
Lian Zhen in the Travel Palace
A skilled social operator who knows how to work a room, though favours owed and gossip can follow: that is Lian Zhen away from home. Wu Qu always sits in the Spouse Palace. What faces you in the Life Palace depends on the pairing: Qi Sha opposite Lian Zhen with Tian Fu, Po Jun opposite Lian Zhen with Tian Xiang, Tian Fu opposite Lian Zhen with Qi Sha, and an empty palace opposite Lian Zhen with Tan Lang. Invitations pile up here, so set your own limits.
Lian Zhen guide - 天府
Tian Fu in the Travel Palace
Qi Sha in the Life Palace, Po Jun in Career and Tan Lang in Wealth: all three Sha Po Lang stars sit in your key palaces, and facing them is always Tian Fu, a well-stocked supply base. Away from home you tend to land in organisations with resources or under managers who look after people, and someone is usually there to meet you when you arrive.
Tian Fu guide - 太陰
Tai Yin in the Travel Palace
Night, water and quiet places suit you on the road. Tai Yin in the Travel Palace is gentle and careful, suited to writing, design, service and work with mostly female clients. Tian Liang always sits in the Spouse Palace, pointing to a mature, caring partner. Tai Yin is brightest in Hai, Zi and Chou, where life in another place is comfortable; dim from Mao to Wei, it settles the nerves to prepare well before each trip.
Tai Yin guide - 貪狼
Tan Lang in the Travel Palace
Every trip becomes a social event with Tan Lang here: dinners, parties, travel and new friends come easily, and opportunities appear over a meal. Tian Fu always sits in the Career Palace, Tian Xiang in Wealth and Qi Sha in Spouse, while the Life Palace holds Zi Wei, Wu Qu, Lian Zhen or nothing. Temptations multiply away from home, so pace the drinks and the spending, and turn contacts into resources rather than a drain.
Tan Lang guide - 巨門
Ju Men in the Travel Palace
Words and expertise open doors for you away from home, suiting teaching, sales, law and media, but misunderstandings and gossip travel with you too. With Ju Men here, Tai Yin always sits in the Career Palace and Tian Liang in Wealth. It is strong in most branches but dim in Chou, Chen, Wei and Xu; in those four, put every contract and promise in writing.
Ju Men guide - 天相
Tian Xiang in the Travel Palace
Po Jun in the Life Palace always faces Tian Xiang here, with Tan Lang in Career and Qi Sha in Wealth. The Po Jun self charges ahead and changes things, while Tian Xiang outside tidies up and presents it well, so your public image is often more polished than your home life, and people offer to mediate for you. Because the seal star takes its cue from its neighbours, the stars in Friends and Health decide whether life away from home helps or drains you.
Tian Xiang guide - 天梁
Tian Liang in the Travel Palace
Elders, teachers and experienced people tend to look after you away from home, and you often end up mediating or caring for others, which suits fieldwork in medicine, social work, consulting and charity. With Tian Liang here, Ju Men always sits in the Career Palace, so your work involves a lot of explaining. Fallen in Si, Shen and Hai, helpfulness can tip into interfering; ask before you rescue anyone.
Tian Liang guide - 七殺
Qi Sha in the Travel Palace
Cautious at home and decisive the moment they leave it: that is the classic Tian Fu person with Qi Sha in the Travel Palace. The Life Palace always holds Tian Fu, alone or with Zi Wei, Wu Qu or Lian Zhen, and fortunes often turn through a posting abroad, a new venture or a move to another region. Life moves fast out there, so take road and sports safety seriously.
Qi Sha guide - 破軍
Po Jun in the Travel Palace
New surroundings, new careers, new addresses, and the new path usually appears only after the change: Po Jun keeps life away from home moving. The Life Palace always holds Tian Xiang, so an orderly person learns flexibility out in the world. Tian Fu sits in Wealth and Tan Lang in Spouse. Work that opens new markets or means living elsewhere suits you; keep a contingency fund for the surprises.
Po Jun guide
Star pairs in the Travel Palace and your Life Palace
When two major stars share the Travel Palace, the Life Palace opposite is fixed too, which makes this a handy shortcut. Every pairing of Tian Ji, Tai Yang or Tian Tong with Tai Yin, Ju Men or Tian Liang, plus Tan Lang with Zi Wei, Wu Qu or Lian Zhen, leaves the Life Palace empty.
The other pairs always face one particular star. Read them together with the single-star notes above.
- Tian Fu with Zi Wei, Wu Qu or Lian Zhen in Travel: Qi Sha in the Life Palace, all drive at home with strong backing outside.
- Tian Xiang with Zi Wei, Wu Qu or Lian Zhen in Travel: Po Jun in the Life Palace, restless inside with a polished public image.
- Qi Sha with Zi Wei, Wu Qu or Lian Zhen in Travel: Tian Fu in the Life Palace, steady inside and decisive outside.
- Po Jun with Zi Wei, Wu Qu or Lian Zhen in Travel: Tian Xiang in the Life Palace, orderly inside with constant change outside.
- Any of the twelve pairs that face an empty palace, such as Tian Ji with Tai Yin or Tian Tong with Tian Liang: the Life Palace is empty and reads itself through this pair.
An empty Travel Palace
With no major star, the Travel Palace borrows the stars of the Life Palace. There is an easy rule to remember: whenever the Travel Palace is empty, the Life Palace holds two major stars, such as Tian Ji with Ju Men, Tian Tong with Tai Yin, Tai Yang with Tian Liang, or Tan Lang with Wu Qu or Lian Zhen. What you take out into the world is simply yourself, so your public image stays close to who you are, only weaker and more open to minor stars and transformations.
The reverse case is just as telling. With an empty Life Palace and a pair of stars in Travel, people often say they only feel like themselves away from home. An empty Life Palace in Shen facing Tian Ji and Tai Yin in Yin, for example, reads its own nature from the Travel stars, and such people find their drive when they change surroundings or travel far.
Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke and Hua Ji in the Travel Palace
A birth-year transformation here colours your luck and reputation away from home, and because the Life Palace sits opposite, it shines straight back onto you.
祿Hua Lu in the Travel Palace
Money and goodwill away from home: other cities, other countries and crowded places bring income and openings, and the further you go the smoother it gets.
Hua Lu explained權Hua Quan in the Travel Palace
Influence away from home: you get pushed into leading roles, which suits postings, running teams and opening markets. Watch that you do not come across as overbearing.
Hua Quan explained科Hua Ke in the Travel Palace
A good name and a refined image in public; recommendations come easily, and exams, selections and public appearances tend to go well.
Hua Ke explained忌Hua Ji in the Travel Palace
Going out takes more effort: delays, misunderstandings and last-minute changes are more likely, and you may care a lot about how others see you. It is no reason to stay home; build in spare time, check the details and avoid guaranteeing anyone's loans while away.
Hua Ji explained
Birth-year Si Hua in the example chart's Travel Palace: Hua Lu
Tian Ma, Lu Cun, Tian Shang and other minor stars
Tian Ma here is movement in its classic form, with frequent trips and moves; with Lu Cun or Hua Lu it forms the well-known Lu Ma Jiao Chi pattern, traditionally a sign of earning money by being on the move. Zuo Fu and You Bi bring support away from home, Tian Kui and Tian Yue bring helpers you meet on the road, and Wen Chang and Wen Qu favour study, exams and writing in another place.
Among the malefic stars, Qing Yang and Tuo Luo warn of arguments and delays away from home, Huo Xing and Ling Xing of sudden changes, and Di Kong and Di Jie of cancelled plans and overspending on the road. The Travel Palace is also always flanked by the Friends and Health palaces, where the common placement method puts Tian Shang and Tian Shi. Old texts used this pair as a reminder to travel safely in certain periods, not as an omen.
Does the Travel Palace show your partner? Derived palaces
Treat the Spouse Palace as your partner's Life Palace and count on: the fifth palace from it is your Travel Palace, which makes it your partner's Wealth Palace. So the more precise version of the saying that it shows your partner is that it shows how your partner earns and spends, and how money works when the two of you live and travel together. It is also in trine with the Spouse Palace, which is why it often hints at whether you met on a trip, abroad or at work.
Other layers: the Travel Palace is the Fortune Palace of your Career Palace, how you really feel about your work; the Career Palace of your Fortune Palace, whether a passion can become a job; and the Children Palace of your Children Palace, which tradition uses for grandchildren. And the Life Palace is the Travel Palace of the Travel Palace: each is the other's outside world.
Going abroad, working elsewhere and emigrating
To judge whether going abroad or moving away suits you, first compare the Life and Travel palaces. A bright major star in the Travel Palace, especially with Hua Lu, Hua Quan or Tian Ma, traditionally marks a chart that does better the further it goes. Restless stars such as Qi Sha, Po Jun, Tian Ji, Tian Ma and Lu Cun on the life and travel axis also make moves and life across borders more likely.
For emigration or long stays, read the Travel Palace with the Property Palace, whether your home base will be stable, and the Wealth Palace, whether you can support yourself out there. Hua Ji in the Travel Palace does not rule out living abroad; it means a longer adjustment and more paperwork, so start early on language, documents and savings. The real decision still rests on your work, family and circumstances.
Opposite the Life Palace: the you other people see
The Life and Travel palaces always face each other, and many teachers call the Travel Palace your outer Life Palace: the Life Palace is your inner setting, the Travel Palace the impression strangers receive. People whose two palaces hold very different stars often hear that they are nothing like what others expected. With Tian Fu in the Life Palace and Qi Sha in Travel, for instance, you may feel steady and cautious while others see someone fast and forceful.
That is why first-impression moments, such as interviews, first dates and presentations, are often read from this palace. The brighter its star, the more vivid the first impression. With an empty Travel Palace, your outer image simply borrows the Life Palace stars, so what people see is what they get. To change the impression you give, work with the Travel star: with Tian Liang show your caring side, with Ju Men explain your expertise clearly.
When a decade or year reaches the Travel Palace
A ten-year period in the Travel Palace usually moves your life outward: a new city, a spell abroad, a posting, or a role that keeps you on the road. Your Life Palace is lit from across the chart during these years, so how you do out there changes how you see yourself. A year in which Hua Lu or Tian Ma activates the Travel Palace suits long trips and expansion; in a year with Hua Ji or malefic stars there, prepare more thoroughly. No need to cancel plans, just have a plan B.
