Career Palace in Zi Wei Dou Shu: Work, Jobs and the 14 Stars

The Career Palace (官祿宮) is the ninth of the twelve palaces. It describes how you work, the kind of job that suits you, the highs and turning points of your career, and even how you study and sit exams. It forms a trine with the Life and Wealth palaces and faces the Spouse Palace, so work is never read on its own. Below is how to read it, the fourteen major stars here with the jobs that suit them, an empty Career Palace and the transformations. Add your birth details to look up your own Career Palace.

What the Career Palace is and why it has two names

The Career Palace is the ninth counted from the Life Palace. For scholars in imperial China the road to success was an official post, so the palace was named for office and salary; modern Chinese books call it the palace of undertakings, and older English translations call it the Official Palace. All these names mean the same palace. It shows how you throw yourself into work: the settings you like, your working rhythm, whether you suit management or expert roles, employment or your own business, and the peaks and turning points of a career.

The Career Palace is not the same as how much you earn. How you make and manage money belongs to the Wealth Palace; the Career Palace is about what you do and how you do it. Plenty of people with a strong Career Palace are not especially rich because they care more about achievement and position, while others with an ordinary one build real wealth through the Wealth and Property palaces.

How to read the Career Palace in four steps

Use the birth chart's Career Palace to set the direction, then the decade and year layers to find the timing.

  1. 1

Major starthe star and its brightness set the kind of work that suits you and your working style; if the palace is empty, borrow the stars of the Spouse Palace opposite.

  2. 2

Three sides and four squares: the Career Palace is in trine with the Life and Wealth palaces and faces the Spouse Palace. Life is your ability, Wealth your income, Spouse how partner and family pull on your work.

  3. 3

Transformations and minor stars: check for Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke or Hua Ji, and whether Zuo Fu, You Bi, Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Lu Cun or malefic stars share the palace, to weigh help against friction.

  4. 4

Timingwhen a decade or year activates the Career Palace, promotions, job changes, new ventures and career switches tend to happen.

The Spouse Palace opposite and the trine

The trine palaces are the Life and Wealth palaces, and together they form the classic triangle used to size up a chart: the Life Palace is what you can do, the Wealth Palace what you harvest, and the Career Palace where you put your ability to work. Because the three always aspect each other, the Career star is tied to the Life star in fixed ways; Zi Wei in the Career Palace, for example, always means Wu Qu in the Life Palace.

The Spouse Palace sits opposite, and with it the palace's three sides and four squares are complete. Its pull on your career usually shows up as a partner's backing, family duties and how working hours get divided, covered in the section on the spouse and career axis below.

An empty Career Palace

With no major star, the Career Palace borrows the stars of the Spouse Palace opposite, so the shape of your career is often tied to a partner, a business partner or family circumstances: marriage, a new relationship or changing family duties can redirect your work. An empty Career Palace means a flexible career, not a poor one; many people with it settle only after crossing fields or changing tracks a few times. Zuo Fu, You Bi, Wen Chang, Wen Qu or Lu Cun inside are often your most important career assets.

Common borrowed pairs include Tian Ji with Ju Men, Tai Yang with Tian Liang, Tian Tong with Tai Yin, Zi Wei with Tan Lang, Tian Tong with Tian Liang and Tai Yang with Ju Men. A frequently asked case is an empty Career Palace facing Tian Ji and Ju Men: the Career Palace is then in Mao or You and the Life Palace always holds Tian Liang in Si or Hai, a chart that stands on analysis, explanation and expert service. One special case: facing Tian Ji and Tian Liang, an empty Career Palace in Chen or Xu comes with an empty Life Palace too.

Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke and Hua Ji in the Career Palace

A birth-year transformation in the Career Palace is where the ups and downs of your working life are felt most.

  • 祿Hua Lu in the Career Palace

Plenty of openings and goodwill at work and a career that expands easily; roles with bonuses or profit share suit you. Busy and happy, just do not spread yourself too thin.

    Hua Lu explained

  • 權Hua Quan in the Career Palace

A strong drive to lead and execute, suited to management and decision-making roles, with good chances of promotion; try not to bring the pressure home.

    Hua Quan explained

  • 科Hua Ke in the Career Palace

Expertise and reputation come first: certifications, further study and reviews go well, and work built on word of mouth suits you. You are organised and tend to meet managers who appreciate you.

    Hua Ke explained

  • 忌Hua Ji in the Career Palace

A deep attachment to work, which often comes first, along with more workplace setbacks or job changes. It means heavy investment, not failure; break goals into smaller steps and keep work and rest in balance.

    Hua Ji explained

Birth-year Si Hua in the example chart's Career Palace: Hua Ji

Minor stars and Lu Cun in the Career Palace

Zuo Fu and You Bi here mean helpers and a team at work; Wen Chang and Wen Qu favour exams, documents and professional licences; Tian Kui and Tian Yue mean sponsors and supportive bosses along the way. Lu Cun here traditionally means a stable career suited to holding ground or building a specialism over years; Qing Yang and Tuo Luo always flank it, in the Friends and Property palaces, so factor in office rivalry and household costs. Tian Ma brings frequent change and travel, suiting fieldwork.

Qing Yang and Tuo Luo here often bring competition and delays at work, but also a professional sharpness that suits technical work, surgery and law. Huo Xing and Ling Xing bring bursts of energy and sudden change, good for short, intense projects. Di Kong and Di Jie fill your head with unconventional ideas; tradition says they do not help with keeping money, yet they are common among creatives, researchers and freelancers.

The spouse and career axis: work and love

The Career and Spouse palaces face each other across the chart, forming the spouse and career axis, and their stars are locked together: Qi Sha in Career always faces the Tian Fu group in Spouse, Po Jun in Career the Tian Xiang group, and Tian Fu in Career always faces Qi Sha. So your working style and your love life are often two sides of one coin, and people who charge at their careers often need a partner who holds the fort.

In daily life the axis shows up in three questions: does your partner support your work, do the two of you run a business together, and how are overtime and family time divided. If every promotion or job change seems to come with a shift in your relationship, look at the transformations along this line. Couples who work together should always read the Career and Spouse palaces side by side.

The Career Palace also shows study and exams

Before someone starts working, the Career Palace describes their main occupation, which is study: attitude to learning, the methods that suit them and luck in exams. Tradition reads schoolwork from the Career Palace together with the Parents Palace, the palace of documents and exams, and from where Wen Chang, Wen Qu and Hua Ke sit; Hua Ke or Wen Chang and Wen Qu in the Career Palace usually mean good exam results.

The major star also shows a learning style. Tian Ji and Ju Men like to get to the bottom of things and suit research-style learning; Tai Yang and Tian Liang like a teacher to lead; Qi Sha and Po Jun need a clear goal and a challenge; Tian Tong and Tai Yin absorb most in a relaxed, interesting setting. Grades still come from method and effort; the chart only helps you find a way of studying that fits.

Does the Career Palace show your partner? Derived palaces

Your partner's Travel Palace is your Career Palace: count seven palaces from the Spouse Palace and you land directly opposite it. A partner's Travel Palace shows how they are out in the world, at social events and in other people's eyes, so when people say the Career Palace shows a partner's looks, the more accurate version is the impression and presence your partner gives others. For the partner's own character and appearance, tradition still relies mainly on the Spouse Palace stars.

The Career Palace has other identities too. It is the Wealth Palace of your Wealth Palace, money making more money; the Fortune Palace of your Fortune Palace, the satisfaction work gives you; the Parents Palace of your Property Palace; and the Health Palace of your Children Palace. And your Life Palace is the Wealth Palace of the Career Palace: you yourself are what your career earns from.

When a decade or year reaches the Career Palace

A ten-year period in the Career Palace makes work the backbone of life: promotions, job changes, new ventures and professional breakthroughs often land in these years. For a single year, count nine palaces from that year's Life Palace to reach its Career Palace and read the stars and transformations there. Hua Lu or Hua Quan usually marks a year of opportunity; Hua Ji tends to mean busy but bumpy, a good year for laying foundations and studying while you wait for the next opening.
