Children Palace in Zi Wei Dou Shu: How to Read It

The Children Palace (子女宮) is the fourth palace. It describes your bond with children and how you parent, and extends to students, younger people, pets and, in older texts, romance and partnerships. One thing first: it shows tendencies in a relationship, and it cannot predict whether or how many children you will have. Below is how to read it, then each of the fourteen major stars here, an empty Children Palace and the four transformations. Add your birth details to see the stars in your own.

What the Children Palace means

Counting from the Life Palace, the Children Palace is the fourth. It covers children and the younger generation: your children's leanings, your style as a parent and how close or distant the relationship feels. People without children read it too, for how they teach, mentor new colleagues, care for pets or even nurture a project or a brand.

It describes the relationship between you and your children, not their fate. A child has a chart of their own; yours only says what you tend to feel and care about most when you are together.

How to read the Children Palace in four steps

Take it in four layers so that no single star either frightens or flatters you.

  1. 1

Major starsthe star here and its brightness set the tone of parenting. If the palace is empty, borrow the stars of the Property Palace opposite.

  2. 2

Three sides and four squares: the Property Palace opposite and the Friends and Parents palaces in trine show how home, your social circle and the older generation shape the way you raise children.

  3. 3

Transformations and malefic stars: Hua Lu, Hua Ji, Qing Yang or Tuo Luo here mark where you invest most and worry most.

  4. 4

Timingdecades and years that activate the Children Palace with Hua Lu or helpful stars are traditionally seen as times of family joy, new students or a project coming to fruition.

The opposite Property Palace and the trine

The Property Palace sits opposite, forming the children and property axis. Property is the home, Children the next generation in it; read together they show how the household shapes the children and how children change the household. A calm Property Palace with a lively Children Palace often means the child is the family's ray of sunshine; a restless Property Palace can mean moves and school changes.

The trine palaces are Friends and Parents. Friends is your social world and Parents the older generation, and with the Property Palace opposite they make up the three sides and four squares. It explains something familiar: grandparents' and friends' opinions really do shape how you bring up your children.

The 14 major stars in the Children Palace

The Children Palace sits a fixed distance from the Life Palace, so many stars here lock in what sits in your Life or Spouse Palace too. Those links are useful clues to how parent and child interact.

  • 紫微

Zi Wei in the Children PalaceIn the example

Children with opinions and pride, little adults from an early age who hate being told off in public. With Zi Wei here, Tian Tong always sits in your Career Palace, so work tends to leave room for family. Zi Wei with Tian Fu in Yin or Shen is traditionally a sign of steady, successful children; with Qi Sha in Si or Hai they want to lead. Offer choices rather than orders.

  • 天機

Tian Ji in the Children Palace

Bright, curious children full of questions, whose hobbies change every few weeks. With Tian Ji here, Zi Wei always sits in your Spouse Palace, so your partner carries weight at home and you should agree on parenting first. Tian Ji with Ju Men in Mao or You gives a talkative little debater; with Tian Liang in Chen or Xu, a sensible child who likes reasoning with adults.

    Tian Ji guide
  • 太陽

Tai Yang in the Children Palace

Tai Yang here always means Zi Wei in your Life Palace. Children are warm, outgoing and love an audience, so give them a stage. Old texts treat the sun as a male star, hence the saying that this placement favours a close bond with sons; that is tradition, not a prediction. Bright from Yin to Wu, home is cheerful; in Xu, Hai or Zi, the child thinks deeply and needs your praise.

    Tai Yang guide
  • 武曲

Wu Qu in the Children Palace

Wu Qu here always means Tian Ji in your Life Palace: you are the planner, your child is the doer, firm and independent, not one for cuddles, and usually sensible with money later on. With Tian Fu in Zi or Wu the child is steady and thrifty; with Po Jun in Si or Hai, bold and changeable. Do things together rather than lecture, and the bond grows.

  • 天同

Tian Tong in the Children Palace

Gentle, sweet, easy children and a home full of laughter; you happily make time to play. With Tian Tong here, Tai Yang always sits in your Siblings Palace and Wu Qu in your Spouse Palace, so a practical partner balances your soft spot for the kids. With Ju Men in Chou or Wei the child is sensitive and inquisitive; with Tian Liang in Yin or Shen, thoughtful and helpful.

  • 廉貞

Lian Zhen in the Children Palace

Lian Zhen here always means Tian Tong in your Life Palace. Children are strong-willed, passionate and perceptive, with principles of their own from early on. Paired with Qi Sha or Po Jun they are energetic and adventurous; with Tian Xiang or Tian Fu, more rule-abiding; with Tan Lang in Si or Hai, socially precocious. Acknowledge the feeling first, then reason.

  • 天府

Tian Fu in the Children Palace

Tian Fu here always means Ju Men in your Life Palace. Children are steady, well-behaved and careful with their things, the kind who give parents little trouble. Tian Fu is never fallen, so the relationship is broadly calm. The thing to watch is a child who is too good, holding back their own wishes; ask now and then what they really want.

  • 太陰

Tai Yin in the Children Palace

Sensitive, gentle, affectionate children; tradition speaks of a close bond with daughters or of a softer temperament. Tai Yin here always means Tian Xiang in your Life Palace, and your own sense of courtesy rubs off on them. Brightest in Hai, Zi and Chou, you share confidences easily; fallen in Mao, Chen or Si, feelings stay inside, and bedtime talks help.

    Tai Yin guide
  • 貪狼

Tan Lang in the Children Palace

Tan Lang here always means Tian Liang in your Life Palace. Children are talented, active and sociable and want to try a bit of everything, while you, the protective type, keep issuing reminders, so curiosity and caution sometimes collide. Tan Lang is also the peach-blossom star, and tradition ties it here to romance and pleasure; see the section on more than children below.

  • 巨門

Ju Men in the Children Palace

Ju Men here always means Qi Sha in your Life Palace. Children are sharp, observant and quick to answer back, and they notice whether you keep your word; a decisive parent and a debating child can clash head-on. With Tai Yang in Yin or Shen the child is sunny and outgoing; fallen in Chen or Xu, arguments come more easily. Keep promises and drop the commands.

  • 天相

Tian Xiang in the Children Palace

Sensible, fair-minded children, often the peacemakers among siblings. With Tian Xiang here, Qi Sha always sits in your Siblings Palace and Tian Liang in your Spouse Palace, so a mature partner tends to anchor family rules. Tian Xiang is shaped by its neighbours, the Spouse and Wealth palaces; Hua Lu or helpful stars there make the relationship smoother.

  • 天梁

Tian Liang in the Children Palace

Tian Liang here always means Qi Sha in your Spouse Palace. Children are mature and responsible, little adults who may even look after you. The shelter star is said to bring protection through children; another tradition says children come later or with a wide age gap. You are a natural carer, so keep concern from turning into control.

  • 七殺

Qi Sha in the Children Palace

Independent, competitive, driven children who dislike having their lives arranged. With Qi Sha here, Tian Liang always sits in your Wealth Palace and Tian Fu in your Property Palace, so the family base is usually solid enough to let them try things. Qi Sha children respond to gentleness, not force: clear goals and plenty of room work better than strict rules.

  • 破軍

Po Jun in the Children PalaceIn the example

Po Jun here always means Tai Yin in your Life Palace. Children with character who test the rules, so the teenage years are the big exam. Po Jun breaks the old to build the new, and tradition says such relationships grind first and settle later, with more understanding after each clash. A gentle parent learns to let this child grow through trial and error.

An empty Children Palace

With no major star here, borrow the stars of the Property Palace opposite. They work more weakly, and minor stars or transformations inside, such as Wen Chang, Tuo Luo, Hua Lu or Hua Ji, weigh more. An empty Children Palace does not mean no children or a weak bond; the relationship simply takes a flexible shape that changes with the child's age and the family's circumstances.

The borrowed pair depends on the branch. Empty in Zi or Wu, the opposite always holds Tian Tong with Tai Yin: a tender, emotional bond. Empty in Chou or Wei you borrow Tian Tong and Ju Men, Tai Yang and Tai Yin, or Wu Qu and Tan Lang; in Mao or You, Tai Yang and Tian Liang, Zi Wei and Tan Lang, or Tian Ji and Ju Men. Borrowing Zi Wei with Tan Lang, for example, suggests an opinionated, gifted child who needs clear house rules.

The four transformations in the Children Palace

A birth-year transformation here marks what you feel most strongly with children and younger people.

  • 祿Hua Lu in the Children Palace

A warm bond and children who bring joy and pride; income through students, younger people or your own creative work is also common.

    Hua Lu explained
  • 權Hua Quan in the Children Palace

Capable, opinionated children and some tussling over who has the final say. Loosen the reins a little and they become your pride.

    Hua Quan explained
  • 科Hua Ke in the Children Palace

Well-mannered, studious or well-regarded children and reasonable conversations; teaching and mentoring also earn you recognition.

    Hua Ke explained
  • 忌Hua Ji in the Children Palace

You find it hard to stop worrying and expect a lot. It does not forecast conflict; it asks you to practise trust and give each other some space.

    Hua Ji explained

Minor stars in the Children Palace: Tuo Luo, Qing Yang and Lu Cun

Zuo Fu and You Bi make children helpful and give you support when you lead a team or a class; Wen Chang and Wen Qu bring clever, artistic children; Tian Kui and Tian Yue mean your children find mentors, or that you are one for your students. With Lu Cun here, Qing Yang always sits in your Spouse Palace and Tuo Luo in your Wealth Palace; tradition speaks of few but fine children and careful parenting. Tian Ma suggests children who study or work far from home early.

Tuo Luo in the Children Palace is a common question. It brings delay and tangled feelings, so worries between parent and child are hard to voice, and tradition adds a saying about children arriving later. Qing Yang brings head-on clashes, Huo Xing and Ling Xing quick tempers, and Di Kong and Di Jie unusual ideas or heavy spending on the children. These show where to put care, not good or bad fortune.

More than children: romance, students and partnerships

Older texts give the Children Palace further meanings. The first is romance: it sits beside the Spouse Palace, so tradition treats it as an extension of love and intimacy, and Tan Lang, Lian Zhen, Hong Luan or Tian Yao here are read as charm and a taste for pleasure. Read it today as how much you value romance and enjoyment in daily life.

The second is students and juniors: teachers, coaches and managers can read it for how they bring people on. The third is partnerships and investment: it is the Career Palace of your Friends Palace and the Travel Palace of your Property Palace, so tradition uses it for joint ventures and for family assets moving outward, through investing, renting or passing a home on.

Can the Children Palace tell how many children I will have?

Old texts do count children from the stars here: bright stars with helpers mean many, malefics or Hua Ji mean few or late. Those rules come from an age with very different medicine and families. Treat them as cultural tradition; they cannot predict pregnancy, the number of children or a child's sex.

Whether and when to have children depends on health, medical care, your partner and your own choices. What the Children Palace offers is a look at your hopes and habits as a parent. For any question about fertility or family planning, please see a gynaecologist or fertility specialist.

Derived palaces: the other roles of the Children Palace

The Children Palace is also the Siblings Palace of your Spouse Palace, so it shows your partner's brothers and sisters, and the Spouse Palace of your Siblings Palace, showing your siblings' partners. How you get on with in-laws at family gatherings can be written here too.

It is also the Friends Palace of your Career Palace, meaning colleagues and clients, and the Wealth Palace of your Parents Palace, traditionally checked for your parents' finances. These are side readings; the palace itself and its three sides and four squares remain the main story.

When a decade or year reaches the Children Palace

Yin men and yang women move counterclockwise, so their fourth decade enters the Children Palace, roughly between ages 32 and 45 depending on the bureau. Yang men and yin women move clockwise and reach it only as the tenth decade, after about 92. In a Children Palace decade, children, students, creative work or a partnership tend to take centre stage.

For a single year, count four palaces counterclockwise from the yearly Life Palace. Hua Lu or Tian Xi there is traditionally a year of family happiness and good bonds with the young; Hua Ji usually means a year of worrying about the children, and a good time for more presence and conversation.
