Wealth Palace in Zi Wei Dou Shu: Meaning and the 14 Stars

The Wealth Palace (財帛宮) is the fifth palace. It shows how you make money, how you feel about it, how you spend it and how your income rises and falls. It is not a bank statement: earning well does not mean keeping it, so read it with the Fortune Palace opposite, the Life and Career palaces in trine and the Property Palace, your treasury. Below is how to read it, then each of the fourteen major stars here, an empty Wealth Palace, the transformations and Lu Cun. Add your birth details to see your own.

What the Wealth Palace means

Counting from the Life Palace, the Wealth Palace is the fifth; its Chinese name pairs money with cloth, the two forms of wealth in old China. It governs where money comes from and how it moves: a fixed salary or sales commission, expertise or connections, generous spending or careful budgeting. It describes your relationship with money and the situations in which you earn most easily.

It measures cash flow, not net worth. Accumulated wealth such as property and savings traditionally belongs to the Property Palace, which is why a strong Wealth Palace with a weak Property Palace earns well and keeps little, while the reverse earns slowly and holds on.

How to read the Wealth Palace in four steps

Before asking whether your money luck is good, work from the nature of your money to its timing; the answer gets far more concrete.

  1. 1

Major starsthe star here and its brightness set how you earn and how you handle money. If the palace is empty, borrow the stars of the Fortune Palace opposite.

  2. 2

Three sides and four squares: the Fortune Palace opposite shows why you spend and what you enjoy; the Life and Career palaces in trine show whether your abilities and work can carry the income.

  3. 3

Transformations and Lu Cun: Hua Lu and Lu Cun here are sources of income, Hua Ji is where you care most and get stuck most; then check malefics such as Qing Yang, Di Kong and Di Jie.

  4. 4

Property Palace and timing: the Property Palace is the treasury that decides what stays, and decades or years that activate the Wealth Palace are when income changes most visibly.

The opposite Fortune Palace and the trine

The Fortune Palace sits opposite, forming the wealth and fortune axis. Fortune is your state of mind and how you enjoy life, and it shines straight into your finances: spending freely when happy, shopping away stress, or saving hard out of insecurity are all this axis at work. Many money problems are solved on the Fortune side.

The trine palaces are Life and Career; with Fortune they make the Wealth Palace's three sides and four squares. Because the stars follow fixed patterns, this group often has set partners: Zi Wei in Wealth always comes with Lian Zhen in the Life Palace and Wu Qu in Career, and Tian Fu in Wealth always means Tian Xiang in the Life Palace. Read the triangle and you see what kind of person, doing what kind of work, earns the money.

The 14 major stars in the Wealth Palace

The major star gives your money its character: how it arrives and how it leaves. Each entry also notes the Life or Career star it always brings with it; open any star for its full guide.

  • 紫微

Zi Wei in the Wealth Palace

With Zi Wei here, Lian Zhen always sits in the Life Palace and Wu Qu in the Career Palace, a triangle suited to earning through management, decisions and status within an organisation. Zi Wei likes a good show, so money goes on image and quality: more so beside Po Jun or Tan Lang, less beside Tian Fu, while Zi Wei with Qi Sha in Si or Hai dares to invest and expand.

  • 天機

Tian Ji in the Wealth PalaceIn the example

Money comes from brainwork, information, planning or technical skill, and income moves with projects, so flexible work suits you. Tian Tong always sits in the Career Palace. With Tai Yin in Yin or Shen you are a good planner; with Ju Men in Mao or You, analysis and talk pay; with Tian Liang in Chen or Xu, consulting and teaching. Short-term speculation is where Tian Ji slips.

    Tian Ji guide
  • 太陽

Tai Yang in the Wealth Palace

Money earned in the open, through reputation, public roles or serving many people, and spent generously on others. Bright from Yin to Wu, income grows with visibility; in Xu, Hai or Zi you give more than you get back. With Tian Liang in Mao or You, professions and public service suit; with Ju Men in Yin or Shen, speaking and media; with Tai Yin in Chou or Wei, two incomes, one visible and one quiet.

    Tai Yang guide
  • 武曲

Wu Qu in the Wealth Palace

Wu Qu, the star of earned wealth, is at home here, and Zi Wei always sits in the Life Palace with Lian Zhen in Career. Discipline and efficiency make the money, in finance, management or hands-on industry. With Tian Fu in Zi or Wu it is steadiest; with Tan Lang in Chou or Wei, tradition says wealth comes after youth; with Qi Sha or Po Jun, bold bets and fast turnover; with Tian Xiang, an even income.

    Wu Qu guide
  • 天同

Tian Tong in the Wealth Palace

Self-made money built up slowly, and a habit of rewarding yourself once it comes in. Tian Ji always sits in the Life Palace, so planning turns small sums into larger ones. With Tian Liang in Yin or Shen income is steady and service or public jobs suit; with Ju Men in Chou or Wei, rewards follow effort; with Tai Yin, smooth in Zi but in need of restraint in Wu, where it is fallen.

    Tian Tong guide
  • 廉貞

Lian Zhen in the Wealth Palace

Ambitious earning through systems, rules or specialist skills: public service, law, technology and precision industries. Wu Qu always sits in the Life Palace and Zi Wei in the Career Palace. With Tian Fu in Chen or Xu it saves best, with Tian Xiang in Zi or Wu income is stable, with Qi Sha in Chou or Wei it is earned the hard way; with Tan Lang or Po Jun, watch the cost of socialising and haste.

  • 天府

Tian Fu in the Wealth Palace

The treasury star knows how to keep money, and here it always means Tian Xiang in the Life Palace. Income may not soar, but earning and saving are well balanced, with a careful, security-first approach that suits steady salaries or managing assets for others. Tian Fu is never fallen; its weak spot is Di Kong or Di Jie in the trine, which open the vault door and let money slip out.

  • 太陰

Tai Yin in the Wealth Palace

Tai Yin is transformed into 'riches': steady income and a gift for accumulating, and Tian Liang always sits in the Life Palace. Money is saved bit by bit, and property, finance, design or businesses serving women suit you. Brightest in Hai, Zi and Chou, your money instincts are sharp; fallen in Mao, Chen or Si, income fluctuates and discipline makes up the difference.

    Tai Yin guide
  • 貪狼

Tan Lang in the Wealth Palace

Networking, entertaining, sales and side businesses are Tan Lang's routes to money, with good windfall luck and generous spending. Qi Sha always sits in the Life Palace and Po Jun in the Career Palace, a Sha Po Lang triangle with fast money and many chances. Bright in Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei, sudden gains are possible; fallen in Si or Hai, desire outruns income, so set a budget first.

    Tan Lang guide
  • 巨門

Ju Men in the Wealth Palace

Talk and expertise earn best: teaching, law, sales, consulting or food and drink, though money often comes with competition or disputes. With Ju Men here, Tai Yin always sits in the Travel Palace and Po Jun in the Property Palace: income from outside, large outlays at home. Beside Tai Yang in Yin or Shen it is at its brightest; fallen in Chen or Xu, get every contract in writing.

    Ju Men guide
  • 天相

Tian Xiang in the Wealth Palace

Steady income, enough to live well, and money handled with balance and dignity, through service, coordination, administration or managing others' assets. Tian Fu always sits in the Career Palace, so the job itself is a solid source. Tian Liang always flanks it from the Children Palace and Ju Men from the Health Palace: Ju Men's Hua Lu forms a supportive pincer, while its Hua Ji warns of money disputes.

    Tian Xiang guide
  • 天梁

Tian Liang in the Wealth Palace

With Tian Liang here, Tai Yin always sits in the Career Palace. The shelter star brings money from elders, professions or caring work such as insurance, medicine and consulting, and someone usually helps when finances get tight. Tian Liang prefers clean money and is not made for speculation; fallen in Si, Shen or Hai, stay well away from money of unclear origin.

    Tian Liang guide
  • 七殺

Qi Sha in the Wealth Palace

Taking on the jobs others turn down is how Qi Sha earns, so income swings widely, effort first and reward later. Po Jun always sits in the Life Palace and Tan Lang in the Career Palace. Qi Sha is never fallen, which suits sales, start-ups or high-risk, high-reward fields; keep one emergency fund that you never touch.

    Qi Sha guide
  • 破軍

Po Jun in the Wealth Palace

The spending star earns and spends boldly, often a big payday followed by a big bill, and thrives on new ventures, reform or niche fields. Tan Lang always sits in the Life Palace and Qi Sha in the Career Palace. Bright in Zi and Wu it breaks and rebuilds with nerve; fallen in Mao or You, live within your means and avoid borrowing to expand.

    Po Jun guide

An empty Wealth Palace (no major star)

With no major star here, borrow the stars of the Fortune Palace opposite. Your way of earning is less fixed and shifts with work, setting and mood, and because the borrowed stars come from Fortune, interests and income tend to merge: doing what you enjoy is often your best money-maker. An empty palace also amplifies Lu Cun, Hua Lu, Qing Yang or Di Jie inside it.

The borrowed pair depends on the branch. Empty in Yin or Shen, you may borrow Tian Tong and Tian Liang, Tian Ji and Tai Yin, or Tai Yang and Ju Men; in Chen or Xu, always Tian Ji and Tian Liang; in Si or Hai, always Lian Zhen and Tan Lang. Borrowing Tian Ji and Tai Yin from Fortune, for example, means earning through planning and care, an uneven income and cautious spending. No major star never means no money; the borrowed stars and the transformations decide.

The four transformations in the Wealth Palace

A birth-year transformation here pinpoints what you feel most strongly about money.

  • 祿Hua Lu in the Wealth Palace

Smooth income and plenty of chances; earning comes naturally. It also stirs the urge to spend, so set some aside when times are good.

    Hua Lu explained
  • 權Hua Quan in the Wealth Palace

Strong control of money, good for running budgets, negotiating prices or managing funds; confidence can also push you to double down, so use stop-losses.

    Hua Quan explained
  • 科Hua Ke in the Wealth Palace

Orderly finances and a good credit name; money arrives cleanly, and when cash is tight someone is usually willing to help.

    Hua Ke explained
  • 忌Hua Ji in the Wealth Palace

Money matters a lot to you; earning feels hard and income can cause anxiety. It is not lifelong shortage, but a call for steady cash flow and no investments you do not understand.

    Hua Ji explained

Lu Cun and the minor stars in the Wealth Palace

Lu Cun is one of the most welcome stars here: stable income, often from a salary or long-term saving, and a careful hand with money. It is always flanked by Qing Yang and Tuo Luo, which puts Qing Yang in your Children Palace and Tuo Luo in your Health Palace, so earning comes with pressure or delay: money that holds rather than races. Tian Ma brings income through movement, and Lu Cun with Tian Ma in one palace is the classic rule that the more you move, the more you earn.

Among the auspicious stars, Zuo Fu and You Bi bring helpers and profitable partnerships, Wen Chang and Wen Qu income from writing, credentials or talent, and Tian Kui and Tian Yue mentors who bring money. Among the malefics, Qing Yang means earning through competition, Tuo Luo late payments, Huo Xing and Ling Xing sudden booms and busts, and Di Kong and Di Jie the risk of speculation and scams; keep money where you understand it and can get it back.

Wealth, Property and Fortune: earning, keeping and spending

Put these three palaces side by side and the whole financial picture appears. Wealth is earning and cash flow; Property is the treasury, what stays and whether you own a home; Fortune, opposite Wealth, is why you spend and whether you can enjoy it without guilt. Strong Wealth with weak Property means money flows like water; strong Property with weak Wealth means slow income that sticks.

Derived palaces back this up: the Property Palace is the Health Palace of your Wealth Palace as well as the Property Palace of your Life Palace, so financial health ends up visible in your home and reserves. The Siblings Palace, as the Wealth Palace's own storeroom, is read for the cash you can reach quickly. Life and Career in the trine supply the ability and the work; Property and Fortune decide whether the money becomes real security.

Which stars are wealth stars?

Zi Wei Dou Shu names three wealth stars among the majors. Wu Qu, transformed into 'wealth', stands for money earned through skill and discipline; Tai Yin, transformed into 'riches', for accumulated wealth, savings and property; Tian Fu, the treasury, for keeping and safeguarding. Two kinds of Lu complete the picture: Lu Cun is a steady stipend, Hua Lu a flowing source of money and opportunity, and Tan Lang's Hua Lu in Wu years or Po Jun's in Gui years often brings windfalls.

Wealth stars in the Wealth, Property or Life Palace traditionally give your finances roots, but they suffer under malefics and Hua Ji too: Wu Qu's Hua Ji in Ren years or Tai Yin's in Yi years means money is a hard-won, anxious subject. Counting wealth stars says little; where they sit, how bright they are and which transformations touch them says a lot.

Derived palaces: the other roles of the Wealth Palace

The Wealth Palace is the Spouse Palace of your Spouse Palace. Count from your partner, and their partner, you, lands on your Wealth Palace, so one reading uses it for how your partner sees you and how money works between you after marriage. It is also the Career Palace of your Career Palace: how well the work goes ends up in your income.

It is also the Property Palace of your Friends Palace, the Friends Palace of your Property Palace and the Fortune Palace of your Travel Palace. In other words, your network, your household and your life out in the world all circle back to your wallet. Get to know the palace itself before leaning on these.

When a decade or year reaches the Wealth Palace

For yin men and yang women the fifth decade reaches the Wealth Palace, roughly between ages 42 and 55 depending on the bureau; yang men and yin women arrive only in the ninth decade, around 82 to 95. A Wealth Palace decade puts income, money management and asset allocation at the centre of life, often with a career move for better pay or serious retirement planning.

For a single year, count five palaces counterclockwise from the yearly Life Palace to see that year's income and outgoings. A yearly Hua Lu flying into it is a good moment for a raise, new clients or investments paying off; Hua Ji asks you to protect cash flow and postpone big purchases. The decade Wealth Palace is read the same way over ten years.
