Health Palace in Zi Wei Dou Shu: What It Shows and the 14 Stars
The Health Palace (疾厄宮), sixth of the twelve palaces, describes your physical constitution, where tiredness tends to build up and how body and mind react under pressure. It is not a medical test: a chart shows tendencies, and only an examination and a doctor can tell you what is going on. Below is what the palace covers, how to read it with the Parents Palace opposite, the fourteen major stars here, an empty Health Palace, the transformations and the minor stars. Add your birth details to see the stars in your own Health Palace.

What the Health Palace shows
Counting from the Life Palace, the Health Palace is the sixth, between Wealth and Travel. Old texts used it for illness and misfortune. Today it reads better as a picture of your physical baseline: which systems deserve extra care, where fatigue shows up first, and how your childhood constitution and adult habits play off each other.
Like the Life Palace, it is about you rather than other people. The Life Palace is your character and the Health Palace is the body that carries it, so the two often echo each other: a restless Life Palace tends to come with a tense body, an easy-going one with a slow metabolism and little love of exercise. Read it to look after yourself early, not to go looking for illness.
How to read the Health Palace in four steps
Keep your built-in constitution, read from the birth chart, apart from the state you are in during a given period, read from the decade and year layers.
- 1
Major star and element: the star's element and brightness point to the body system tradition asks you to look after. If the palace is empty, borrow the stars of the Parents Palace opposite, with a lighter touch.
- 2
Three sides and four squares: the Parents Palace opposite speaks of heredity and early care, while the Siblings and Property palaces in trine cover daily routine and your home.
- 3
Transformations and malefic stars: Hua Ji, Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing or Ling Xing here or opposite mark what needs attention; Hua Lu and Hua Ke usually mean good recovery and good doctors.
- 4
Timingwhen a decade or year activates the Health Palace with Hua Ji or malefic stars, book a check-up before your body has to complain.
The Parents Palace opposite and the trine
The Parents Palace sits opposite, forming the health and parents axis. It stands for your parents, inheritance and how you were cared for as a child, so tradition reads inborn constitution from the two palaces together. A weak Health Palace facing a steady Parents Palace often means good care at home made up the difference. For real family medical history, rely on your relatives' actual records.
The trine palaces are Siblings and Property. By derived palaces the Siblings Palace is the spouse of your Parents Palace, which is why some teachers read it as your mother, so this palace's four squares hold both parents. The Property Palace is your home: damp, noisy or stuffy housing was long believed to wear the body down. That is why a Health Palace reading always pulls in the Parents, Siblings and Property palaces too.
The 14 major stars in the Health Palace
What each major star traditionally points to in the body, plus what the chart structure always places elsewhere when that star sits here. These are tendencies, not diagnoses; for any symptom, see a doctor.
- 紫微
Zi Wei in the Health Palace
Zi Wei is Earth, traditionally linked to the stomach, spleen and digestion. With the emperor star here the body usually holds up, and when something goes wrong a capable doctor tends to appear; the weak spot is shrugging off discomfort. The Fortune Palace always holds Tian Tong in this layout, so relaxing genuinely speeds recovery. Zi Wei with Po Jun swings between strict and slack routines; Zi Wei with Tan Lang needs restraint at the table.
Zi Wei guide - 天機
Tian Ji in the Health Palace
Stiff shoulders, light sleep and dry, tired eyes are the three classic signals of Tian Ji in the Health Palace, and they usually come from a mind that will not switch off. Tian Ji is Wood: liver, gallbladder, nerves and the tendons of the limbs. Check the Life Palace and you will always find Lian Zhen, a driven personality, so downtime has to be scheduled. With Tian Liang alongside, health reading becomes a hobby; keep your doctor's advice above the articles.
Tian Ji guide - 太陽
Tai Yang in the Health Palace
Think of a light nobody switches off: with Tai Yang here you are full of energy and bad at stopping, so late nights and overwork are the usual story. Tai Yang is Fire, linked to the heart, blood pressure, eyes and head, and Zi Wei always sits in the Spouse Palace. Paired with Tai Yin it tends to flip day and night; with Tian Liang it looks after everyone except itself. In night branches such as Hai and Zi, put rest first.
Tai Yang guide - 武曲
Wu Qu in the Health Palace
Zi Wei in the Siblings Palace and Tian Tong in Travel come fixed with Wu Qu here. Wu Qu is Metal: lungs, airways, nose, bones and teeth, and it is tough enough that aches get ignored. Paired with Qi Sha or Po Jun the metal doubles, and old texts warn of knocks and blades; today, read that as taking sport and work safety seriously. With Tan Lang or Tian Fu the constitution is sturdier, and moderation at meals is the best upkeep.
Wu Qu guide - 天同
Tian Tong in the Health Palace
Many small complaints, few big ones: that is the traditional verdict on Tian Tong here. The star of blessings is Water, linked to the kidneys, bladder and fluid balance, and its love of comfort can bring weight gain or water retention. Only people with Zi Wei in the Life Palace have Tian Tong in this palace. With Ju Men, swallowed feelings show up in the stomach; with Tian Liang, tradition promises quick recovery and a knack for escaping trouble.
Tian Tong guide - 廉貞
Lian Zhen in the Health PalaceBorrowed here
Unspoken stress coming out as skin, sleep or circulation signals is the typical Lian Zhen pattern here. Lian Zhen is Fire, the imprisoned star, linked to circulation, inflammation and immunity, and for women to gynaecological care as well. The Life Palace always holds Tai Yang: cheerful on the surface, swallowing worries inside. With Qi Sha, old texts warn of injuries and surgery; with Tan Lang, go easy on alcohol, cigarettes and late dinners.
Lian Zhen guide - 天府
Tian Fu in the Health Palace
The treasury star in the Health Palace traditionally brings a solid constitution and few ailments; the real risk is eating too well, so watch digestion, weight and metabolism. In this layout Tian Liang holds the Life Palace and Qi Sha faces you from the Parents Palace. Tian Fu tends to endure quietly when unwell, which makes regular check-ups more important than usual. With Wu Qu alongside, stamina is excellent, but business dinners add up.
Tian Fu guide - 太陰
Tai Yin in the Health Palace
A hard-charging Qi Sha in the Life Palace always comes with Tai Yin here, a body that runs on night-time repair. Tradition links Tai Yin to the kidneys, hormones, reproduction and eyes, and women may notice their cycles and hormonal shifts more. Bright in Hai, Zi and Chou, recovery is good; fallen in Mao, Chen and Si, you feel the cold and tire easily, and sleep becomes the centre of your upkeep.
Tai Yin guide - 貪狼
Tan Lang in the Health PalaceBorrowed here
With Tan Lang here, the health theme is appetite in every sense: late snacks, drinks, binge-watching and fun that does not stop. Tradition gives it Wood with a watery body, so liver, gallbladder, kidneys and reproduction. Tai Yin always sits in Travel, Tian Fu in Friends and Ju Men in Wealth, so social meals are part of life. Learning to brake while you are enjoying yourself is the best medicine here.
Tan Lang guide - 巨門
Ju Men in the Health Palace
When you swallow your words, the stomach is often the first to protest: that is Ju Men in the Health Palace. Ju Men is a gate, traditionally the mouth, throat, oesophagus and digestive tract, and the same holds when it pairs with Tian Tong, Tian Ji or Tai Yang. Structurally, Tan Lang always sits in Travel, Tian Fu in Career and Tian Xiang in Wealth. Chewing slowly and saying what is on your mind does more here than supplements.
Ju Men guide - 天相
Tian Xiang in the Health Palace
With the seal star here, your health takes its cue from the palaces on either side, Wealth and Travel: calm neighbours keep the body steady, while Hua Ji on one side and Qing Yang on the other form the classic squeeze that calls for a stricter routine. Tian Xiang is Water, traditionally the skin, bladder and urinary system. Po Jun always sits in the Parents Palace, Tian Liang in Wealth and Ju Men in Travel.
Tian Xiang guide - 天梁
Tian Liang in the Health Palace
The star of longevity works here like a rescue team that travels with you: tradition says it finds good doctors and turns danger aside. It always pairs with Po Jun in the Life Palace, so someone who loves to charge ahead has Tian Liang to clean up after them. It is Earth, linked to the stomach and spleen, and many people with it here are often unwell as children yet sturdier with age. It gives resilience, not a licence to skip upkeep.
Tian Liang guide - 七殺
Qi Sha in the Health Palace
People with Qi Sha here recover fast and tend to keep going until they drop. Qi Sha is Metal: lungs, airways and large intestine, with a traditional warning about injuries. Tian Fu always faces it from the Parents Palace, alone or with Zi Wei, Wu Qu or Lian Zhen, while Tian Liang sits in Travel and Ju Men in Career. With Wu Qu, look after the airways and bones; with Lian Zhen, take extra care on the road and in sport.
Qi Sha guide - 破軍
Po Jun in the Health Palace
Overspend when busy, bounce back after rest: Po Jun transforms into expenditure, and here the body runs on boom and bust. Tradition gives it Water, so kidneys, urinary and reproductive systems, and says a delicate childhood often turns into a stronger adulthood. Anyone with Ju Men in the Life Palace has Po Jun here, facing Tian Xiang in the Parents Palace. With Zi Wei or Wu Qu stamina improves, but long runs of late nights still cost you.

The 14 major stars and the body (traditional links)
Chinese astrology borrows the five-element map of the organs from traditional Chinese medicine: Wood for liver and gallbladder, Fire for heart and blood, Earth for spleen and stomach, Metal for lungs and airways, Water for kidneys, bladder and reproduction. Each major star has an element, and that is how tradition links a star in the Health Palace to a part of the body. Schools differ in the details.
Treat this as a lifestyle prompt, not a lab report. A chart cannot tell whether you have a disease and cannot replace screening or a clinic visit. If you have symptoms, a family history or a problem that will not go away, talk to a doctor.
- Earth (Zi Wei, Tian Fu, Tian Liang): spleen, stomach and digestion, along with weight and metabolism; regular meals matter most.
- Wood (Tian Ji, Tan Lang): liver, gallbladder, nerves, tendons and limbs; Tan Lang is also said to have a watery body, so kidneys and reproduction too.
- Fire (Tai Yang, Lian Zhen): heart, blood pressure and circulation; Tai Yang adds the eyes and head, Lian Zhen inflammation and immunity.
- Metal (Wu Qu, Qi Sha): lungs, airways, nose and large intestine, plus bones, teeth and injuries.
- Water (Tian Tong, Tai Yin, Ju Men, Tian Xiang, Po Jun): kidneys, bladder, reproductive and hormonal systems; Ju Men adds the mouth and throat (some count it as Earth), Tian Xiang the skin.
Constitution and how you handle stress
Many teachers say this palace shows how you carry pressure, not just your body. Give two people the same month of overtime: with Qi Sha or Po Jun here, they push through and then crash; with Tian Ji or Ju Men, sleep and appetite go first; with Tian Tong or Tai Yin, they soothe themselves with food and sleep. Know your pattern and you can rest when the early signals appear.
Read it alongside the Fortune Palace, which by derived palaces is the Health Palace of your Health Palace: mood and spirit on one side, physical endurance on the other. A restless Fortune Palace plus malefic stars here is the classic sign that body and mind drag each other down. If low mood, anxiety or poor sleep last for weeks, seeing a doctor or counsellor is the most practical way to care for this palace.
An empty Health Palace
With no major star, the Health Palace borrows the stars of the Parents Palace opposite. Their effect is lighter, and the minor stars and transformations inside stand out more. Empty does not mean unusually healthy or unusually frail; it means your constitution is more malleable, so sleep, diet and surroundings show their effect more clearly than any star.
Common borrowed pairs include Tian Tong with Ju Men, Tai Yang with Tian Liang, Tian Ji with Tai Yin, Tan Lang with Zi Wei or Wu Qu, and Tian Tong with Tai Yin. Take an empty Health Palace in Chou or Wei facing Tian Tong and Ju Men: the Life Palace then always holds Tan Lang, and the borrowed pair says digestion follows mood, so regular mealtimes matter more than the menu.
Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke and Hua Ji in the Health Palace
Transformations travel with stars: your birth-year stem decides which star takes Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke or Hua Ji, and you then check whether that star sits in the Health Palace.
祿Hua Lu in the Health Palace
Good recovery, a healthy appetite and a knack for finding the right doctor; the catch is enjoying life so much that weight and blood sugar creep up.
Hua Lu explained權Hua Quan in the Health Palace
Stamina and willpower that carry a heavy workload, but also a habit of giving your body orders: pushing through, or overdoing exercise and diets.
Hua Quan explained科Hua Ke in the Health Palace
A fairly stable body, problems caught early and handled well, and a willingness to follow proper check-ups and medical advice.
Hua Ke explained忌Hua Ji in the Health Palace
Extra sensitivity to your body, or one area that needs long-term care. It does not mean serious illness; make check-ups and steady routines a habit, and see a doctor early when something feels off.
Hua Ji explained
Minor stars, Lu Cun and Tian Shi in the Health Palace
The auspicious stars help here: Tian Kui and Tian Yue bring helpful people or good doctors when you are unwell, Zuo Fu and You Bi mean someone looks after you, and Wen Chang and Wen Qu make you read up and follow instructions. Lu Cun here traditionally means a steady constitution and good self-care, but Qing Yang and Tuo Luo always flank it, landing in the Wealth and Travel palaces. Tian Ma here usually means tiredness from being constantly on the move.
Among the malefic stars, Qing Yang and Tuo Luo are tied to injuries and chronic aches, Huo Xing and Ling Xing to inflammation, impatience and sudden discomfort, and Di Kong and Di Jie to irregular meals and sleep. In the common placement method the minor star Tian Shi always sits in the Health Palace and, with Tian Shang in the Friends Palace, flanks the Travel Palace; the Zhongzhou school swaps the two for men born in yin years and women born in yang years. Everyone has it, so it is no cause for alarm.
Does the Health Palace show your spouse? Derived palaces
Derived palaces restart the count from any palace. Count from the Spouse Palace and the Health Palace is your partner's Children Palace; count from the Children Palace and it is your child's Spouse Palace. That is why some teachers read physical intimacy and a couple's bodily rapport here, and some read children's love lives. For your partner as a person, the Spouse Palace remains the main source.
Other layers are just as useful. The Health Palace is the Property Palace of your Career Palace and the Career Palace of your Property Palace, so many teachers use it for your workplace and office. It is the Travel Palace of your Parents Palace, how your parents fare out in the world. And the Health Palace of the Health Palace is the Fortune Palace, a structural reason why body and mood so often falter together.
When a decade or year reaches the Health Palace
A ten-year period in the Health Palace makes your body and routine a theme you cannot ignore: a heavier workload, a new pace of life, or finally taking exercise and diet seriously. It does not mean ten years of illness; it means your body's feedback gets louder, prompting you to adjust. For a single year, find that year's Life Palace, count to its Health Palace and see which transformations reach it. In a year with Hua Ji or malefic stars there, simply book your check-up early.
