Friends Palace in Zi Wei Dou Shu: Friends, Staff and the 14 Stars

The Friends Palace (交友宮), eighth of the twelve palaces, was called the Servants Palace in the old books. It covers the people outside your family who shape your life: friends, classmates, colleagues, staff, clients and business partners, and whether a group lifts you up or wears you down. It sits opposite the Siblings Palace, so your inner circle and the wider crowd are read together. Below is what it shows, then the fourteen major stars here, an empty palace, the transformations and minor stars. Add your birth details to see your own Friends Palace.

What the Friends Palace is and what it shows

Counting from the Life Palace, the Friends Palace is the eighth. It covers people who are not family but still shape your life: the quality of your friendships, colleagues and collaborators (bosses are mostly read from the Parents Palace), staff and clients, online communities and anyone you go into business with. It answers three questions: what kind of people do you attract, do they add to your life or drain it, and what role do you usually play in a group?

It also measures the strength of the crowd behind you. How far someone gets often depends on how many people are willing to follow, which is why the old books called it the Servants Palace and read whether the household staff were loyal and capable. Today the staff are employees, teams and followers, and the logic is the same. A good Friends Palace does not mean many friends; it means someone shows up when it counts.

Servants Palace or Friends Palace: why there are two names

The Servants Palace (僕役宮, also 奴僕宮) and the Friends Palace are the same palace under names from different eras. When classic texts such as the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu were compiled, well-off households kept servants and hired hands, and this palace showed whether the people working for you were loyal and useful.

Modern books renamed it the Friends Palace, widening it to friends, colleagues and partners and matching more equal relationships. Chart software in Taiwan uses both names, so if you see the Servants Palace, simply read it as the Friends Palace.

How to read the Friends Palace in four steps

People come and go in this palace, so read the structure first and the timing second, and a single good or bad year will not mislead you.

  1. 1

Major starthe star and its brightness describe the personalities who most often surround you. If the palace is empty, borrow the stars of the Siblings Palace opposite.

  2. 2

Three sides and four squares: the Siblings Palace opposite is your core circle of peers, and the Parents and Children palaces in trine are elders and juniors; all four make up your full network.

  3. 3

Transformations and minor stars: whether Hua Lu, Hua Ji, Zuo Fu, You Bi, Di Kong or Di Jie fall here sets the balance between support and loss.

  4. 4

Timingwhen a decade or year reaches the Friends Palace or transformations activate it, circles change, partnerships form and you may start leading a team.

The Siblings Palace opposite and the trine

The Siblings Palace sits opposite, and the pair forms the siblings and friends axis that runs through all your peer relationships: Siblings for brothers, sisters, close peers and confidants, Friends for the wider circle, colleagues and the public. A steady Siblings Palace with changeable Friends stars often means a small, stable core and a fast-moving outer circle; malefic stars on both ends warn of rivalry and money tangles among peers.

The trine palaces are Parents and Children. The Parents Palace covers elders, bosses and official bodies; the Children Palace covers juniors, students and the people you mentor. Together with the peers in the Friends Palace they map your whole network: above, below and alongside you. Only with all four in view do you see the Friends Palace's full three sides and four squares.

The 14 major stars in the Friends Palace

The star here describes the people who most often surround you and the temperature of those relationships. Alongside each one you will find which stars the chart then always puts in other palaces.

  • 紫微

Zi Wei in the Friends Palace

An easy-going Tian Tong in the Life Palace, alone or with Tai Yin, Ju Men or Tian Liang, always has Zi Wei in this palace. The friends around you tend to be opinionated and well placed, and their resources open doors; the catch is that you often end up giving way. Tradition notes that the ruling star in the servants' seat makes others stronger than you, so do not let anyone else make your life decisions.

  • 天機

Tian Ji in the Friends Palace

People share ideas and openings without being asked: that is the upside of Tian Ji in the Friends Palace. The downside is speed, since this year's partner may be gone next year. Zi Wei always sits in the Travel Palace and Lian Zhen in Spouse, so your reach in the world is bigger than it looks. With quick-change collaborators like these, write down roles and deadlines; a verbal promise is not enough.

  • 太陽

Tai Yang in the Friends Palace

First to pay for dinner, first to help, first to pass on a job lead: with Tai Yang here you are usually the one who gives, and it earns you a wide circle and a good name. The Life Palace is always Lian Zhen. Tai Yang gives light, so giving more than you get back is normal. In the daytime branches from Yin to Wu the generosity returns as reputation; dim in Xu, Hai, Zi and Chou, give within your means.

  • 武曲

Wu Qu in the Friends PalaceIn the example

Contacts you can actually do business with: Wu Qu brings practical friends who keep their word, and many connections revolve around work or money. Tai Yang always sits in the Travel Palace and Tian Tong in Career. Wu Qu has a hard edge, so do the maths clearly when partnering with friends, and before lending money ask whether you could live with not getting it back, especially with Qi Sha or Po Jun alongside.

    Wu Qu guide
  • 天同

Tian Tong in the Friends Palace

Get-togethers mean good food and relaxed conversation, with very little scheming: Tian Tong friends are gentle and easy. Zi Wei always sits in the Spouse Palace and Wu Qu in Travel. The weakness is that such friends do not carry heavy loads, so when real trouble comes you rely on yourself. Enjoy them for fun and find dependable people for serious work.

  • 廉貞

Lian Zhen in the Friends Palace

Anyone with Tian Ji in the Life Palace has Lian Zhen here. Clever and thoughtful yourself, you attract vivid characters with real social skill, and friendships run hot and can end in a falling-out. Lian Zhen is a secondary peach-blossom star, so your circle often overlaps with entertainment and business dinners. With Tan Lang or Po Jun alongside, keep friendship and business, and friendship and romance, clearly apart.

    Lian Zhen guide
  • 天府

Tian Fu in the Friends Palace

Friends who can offer real help when you need it, and who stay for the long haul: Tian Fu brings steady, well-resourced people. Qi Sha always sits in the Siblings Palace opposite, so brothers, sisters and close peers tend to be busy and strong-willed, and outside friends can feel more like family. Tian Fu also cares about face, so with these friends, courtesy and returning favours matter.

  • 太陰

Tai Yin in the Friends Palace

Women friends and female clients are often your source of help, and bonds build slowly and deepen over the years. With Tai Yin here, Tian Fu always sits in the Career Palace and Tan Lang in Travel. Where Tai Yin shines, in Hai, Zi and Chou, friendships are warm and lasting; in the dim Mao, Chen and Si, friends are touchy, and saying things plainly prevents misunderstandings.

    Tai Yin guide
  • 貪狼

Tan Lang in the Friends Palace

Parties, clubs and hobby groups are where your network grows, full of talented, fun-loving people. With Tan Lang here, Ju Men always sits in the Travel Palace and Tai Yin in Career, so choose your words carefully in public. These friendships come quickly and fade quickly; enjoy the fun, but stay clear-headed once money or romance is involved.

    Tan Lang guide
  • 巨門

Ju Men in the Friends Palace

Misunderstandings start with retelling, a rule worth remembering with Ju Men in the Friends Palace. Friends tend to be articulate and expert and give sharp, useful advice, but where there are many people there is talk, and Ju Men, the star of what is hidden, can bring people who say one thing and do another. The Life Palace always holds Po Jun. Confirm important matters in person, not through a go-between.

    Ju Men guide
  • 天相

Tian Xiang in the Friends Palace

Loyal, tactful friends you can entrust with things, and you are often pulled in as the mediator. With Tian Xiang here, Po Jun always sits in the Siblings Palace opposite, so sibling ties change more and friends become the steady support. Watch the palaces on either side, Travel and Career: Tian Xiang takes its cue from them, and when they are in good shape friends help a great deal.

    Tian Xiang guide
  • 天梁

Tian Liang in the Friends Palace

Older, experienced friends gather round to guide you, or you become the big brother or big sister of the group: anyone with Tian Fu in the Life Palace has Tian Liang here. It shelters but also lectures, and over time friendships can turn into a question of who manages whom; a little more peer-to-peer respect makes them last.

  • 七殺

Qi Sha in the Friends PalaceIn the example

Comrades you can charge with, who may also fall out with you over one sharp sentence: Qi Sha friends are direct, forceful doers. Your own Life Palace always holds the sensitive Tai Yin, and Tian Fu sits in the Siblings Palace opposite. When working with Qi Sha types, keep goals clear and responsibilities defined, and argue about the issue rather than the person.

  • 破軍

Po Jun in the Friends Palace

A new set of friends for every stage of life is the usual Po Jun story here, along with the odd friend who leaves you to clean up. Tian Liang always holds the Life Palace and Tian Xiang the Siblings Palace opposite. Po Jun means expense, so be careful with loans and partnerships, but it also brings people from very different backgrounds who push you to change.

    Po Jun guide

An empty Friends Palace

With no major star, the Friends Palace borrows the stars of the Siblings Palace opposite. An empty palace makes your circle more flexible: the people you befriend vary a lot between life stages, influence comes and goes, and whether Zuo Fu, You Bi, Tian Kui or Tian Yue sit here says more about real help than any borrowed star. Empty does not mean friendless; it means you get to choose who comes close.

Common borrowed pairs include Tian Tong with Ju Men, Tai Yang with Tian Liang, Tan Lang with Lian Zhen or Zi Wei, Tian Ji with Ju Men and Tai Yang with Ju Men. An empty Friends Palace in Hai or Si facing Lian Zhen and Tan Lang, for example, always comes with Ju Men in the Life Palace: the borrowed pair keeps your circle lively, while your analytical Ju Men means many acquaintances but few true confidants.

Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke and Hua Ji in the Friends Palace

When a birth-year transformation lands in the Friends Palace, relationships with other people become the area where your gains and losses show most clearly.

  • 祿Hua Lu in the Friends Palace

Popular and well connected: friends share resources, and opportunities often arrive through people. The flip side is spending a lot on friends, so keep goodwill and expenses apart.

    Hua Lu explained
  • 權Hua Quan in the Friends Palace

Capable, opinionated friends or staff and a strong team; watch for being steered by friends, or for staff who are hard to manage.

    Hua Quan explained
  • 科Hua Ke in the Friends Palace

Well-mannered, well-regarded connections, easy recommendations and a good name; friendships stay reasonable and dignified.

    Hua Ke explained
  • 忌Hua Ji in the Friends Palace

You care deeply about relationships, worry about friends and may feel you give more than anyone notices; be careful with money between friends and with guaranteeing loans. It is not a reason to avoid friendship, only to choose carefully and set boundaries.

Lu Cun, Di Kong, Di Jie, Tian Yue and Tian Shang here

The auspicious stars are welcome here: Zuo Fu and You Bi mean friends and staff who pull their weight; Tian Kui and Tian Yue mean helpers in your network, with Tian Yue, the yin noble, often a quiet backer or an older woman; and Wen Chang and Wen Qu fill your circle with writers and professionals. Lu Cun here traditionally means steady, practical friends, but also that some of your resources sit in other hands. Qing Yang and Tuo Luo always flank it, in the Travel and Career palaces, so competition outside and at work is sharper.

Di Kong and Di Jie here traditionally warn of money lost between friends or effort that comes to nothing; a modern reading is a circle built on ideas more than money, ideal for like-minded people who never talk business. Qing Yang and Tuo Luo bring rivalry and delays, Huo Xing and Ling Xing sudden fallings-out. In the common placement method Tian Shang always sits in the Friends Palace, flanking the Travel Palace with Tian Shi in Health; every chart has it, and tradition treats it as a timing reminder about losses through people, not an omen.

Staff, clients and business partners

By derived palaces the Friends Palace is the Parents Palace of your Career Palace, so some teachers read it as your support system at work. For a manager it shows whether your team pulls its weight; in sales it shows the quality of your clients; for a founder it matters even more, because co-founders, investors and the first hires all live here.

To judge a partnership, compare the strength of the Friends and Life palaces. When the Friends star is more forceful than your own, as with Tian Tong in the Life Palace and Zi Wei in Friends, partners tend to have stronger opinions than you, so agree on roles and authority first. Hua Ji, Qing Yang or Di Jie here are reminders to put money matters in writing and think twice before guaranteeing loans. Good partnerships rest on rules, not stars.

Does the Friends Palace show your spouse? Derived palaces

Counting from the Spouse Palace, the Friends Palace is the sixth: your partner's Health Palace. So reading your spouse from the Friends Palace really means reading your partner's health and constitution, not their personality; in the other direction, it is the Spouse Palace of your Health Palace. To understand your partner as a person, the Spouse Palace still comes first.

Other common layers: the Friends Palace is the Travel Palace of your Siblings Palace, how your siblings fare in the world; the Parents Palace of your Career Palace, which some read as your company and its management; the Wealth Palace of your Children Palace, your children's finances; and the Fortune Palace of your Property Palace. Your Life Palace, meanwhile, is the Health Palace of the Friends Palace.

When a decade or year reaches the Friends Palace

A ten-year period in the Friends Palace puts your network centre stage: a new professional circle, a new community, leading a team or going into partnership, and much of that decade's success depends on who stands with you. A year that brings Hua Lu into the Friends Palace suits networking and finding partners; in a year with Hua Ji, Di Kong or Di Jie there, read contracts closely, avoid vouching for others and watch people before trusting them deeply.
