Hua Ke, the Fame Transformation: Meaning, Stars and Palaces
Hua Ke (化科) is the third of the Four Transformations: the mildest and the most durable. It makes a star orderly, well regarded and easy to notice, and when trouble comes, help and solutions turn up more readily. It does not bring cash like Hua Lu or force like Hua Quan; it brings reputation and dignity. This guide explains what Hua Ke means, which star takes it in each year (including the auxiliary stars Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Zuo Fu and You Bi), Hua Ke in the twelve palaces, and its pairings. Add your birth details to see where yours sits.

What Hua Ke means: reputation, order and relief
Ke refers to the imperial examinations, the rank and name a scholar won by passing them. So Hua Ke is tied to study, exams, qualifications and reputation. Today it means doing things methodically in some area of life, explaining yourself clearly and looking reliable, so that people trust you and pass opportunities your way.
Read the star first. Hua Ke on Wen Chang or Wen Qu favours writing, talent and exams; on Zuo Fu or You Bi, helpers and harmony; on Zi Wei or Tai Yin, dignity and praise; on Wu Qu or Tian Liang, a solid, clean name. Then the palace and its opposite: Hua Ke in a palace is your own good name, while Hua Ke shining in from the opposite palace is others speaking up for you. Finally, see whether it meets Hua Ji; Hua Ke often takes the edge off it, which is what tradition means by Hua Ke relieving trouble.

Which stars take Hua Ke, including the auxiliary stars
Hua Ke is the transformation most often carried by auxiliary stars. In four of the ten stems it goes to one of the six auspicious stars: Wen Chang in Bing years, You Bi in Wu years, Wen Qu in Xin years and Zuo Fu in Ren years. Tai Yin takes it twice, in Geng and Gui years. In short, Hua Ke on Wen Chang or Wen Qu means talent recognised, and on Zuo Fu or You Bi means your helpers come into view.

- * 戊: some books give 太陽 化科 instead of 右弼.
- * 庚: some books give 天同 化科 and 太陰 化忌, among other variants. We follow the common table.
- * 壬: some books give 天府 化科 instead of 左輔.
- The Zi Wei year changes at Lunar New Year (正月初一), not at 立春, so births in January or early February may take the stem of the year before.
Wu Qu Hua Ke (Jia years)
In Jia years the Ke lands on the wealth star, so the name rests on credit: money sense, execution and expertise get recognised, building a reliable reputation in finance, accounting or management. It comes from doing what you say, not from packaging.
Zi Wei Hua Ke (Yi years)
Hua Ke dresses the emperor star in fine clothes: poise, presence and favour from those above. Zi Wei only ever takes Quan and Ke, and in Yi years its dignity shows in a gentle, respected form.
Wen Chang Hua Ke (Bing years)
Wen Chang rules documents and exams, so its Hua Ke is the classic exam luck: study, licences, civil-service tests, writing and proposals all go well, and qualifications build up step by step.
Tian Ji Hua Ke (Ding years)
In Ding years Hua Ke lands on Tian Ji, and the reputation comes from thinking clearly: a report that makes a tangled problem simple, a method others can follow and get results. It suits consulting, planning and knowledge work, and the name grows with every problem solved.
You Bi Hua Ke (Wu years)
You Bi is a helper star, so its Hua Ke gives your helpers weight: reliable people who will vouch for you, and praise for your own willingness to help. This Ke is about harmony and suits teamwork and staff roles.
Tian Liang Hua Ke (Ji years)
Tian Liang Hua Ke is a reputation for integrity: upright, responsible and caring, the trusted elder or expert. Many teachers feel Tian Liang's principled nature fits Hua Ke best, especially in medicine, education, charity and insurance.
- Example
Tai Yin Hua Ke (Geng years)
In Geng years Tai Yang takes Lu and Tai Yin takes Ke, so sun and moon shine together. Tai Yin Hua Ke gets sensitivity, gentleness and taste noticed, and work behind the scenes earns credit. Tai Yin is the mother star, and tradition often sees older women in the family or a partner helping your name.
Wen Qu Hua Ke (Xin years)
Wen Qu leans to eloquence, talent and feeling, so its Hua Ke wins applause in speaking, music, art, design and social media. Wen Chang takes Hua Ji in the same year, which is why people born then often talk better than they write.
Zuo Fu Hua Ke (Ren years)
Zuo Fu Hua Ke is steady support: dependable colleagues or bosses who promote you, and a reputation as the best right hand around. Compared with You Bi, Zuo Fu's help is steadier and lasts longer.
Tai Yin Hua Ke (Gui years)
Gui years differ from Geng: Tai Yin Hua Ke arrives with Po Jun Hua Lu, Ju Men Hua Quan and Tan Lang Hua Ji, a set full of upheaval. Here Tai Yin's Ke is a night light in a storm; staying careful and orderly while others panic is what builds your name.
Hua Ke in the 12 palaces

Hua Ke combinations: with Hua Ji, with Hua Quan, and relief
Hua Ke usually cushions or adds polish. When it meets other transformations, these three situations matter most.
Ke and Ji together: a good name with a burden
Hua Ke and Hua Ji in one palace bring reputation and a nagging issue at once: expertise praised under heavy pressure, or paperwork that succeeds after detours. Tradition says Hua Ke lightens Hua Ji, so this pairing is usually easier to handle than Hua Ji alone; it just needs patience to finish.
Ke meeting Quan: reputation that earns authority
Seen from Hua Ke's side, meeting Hua Quan turns being recognised into being trusted with decisions: a good name becomes real responsibility. It is typical of the move from expert to manager, and the bigger the name, the more professional integrity matters.
Hua Ke relieving trouble
Hua Ke is called a relieving star because it tends to bring a way out: a mediator in a dispute, a tip before an exam, the right specialist when you need one. The effect is clearest when it sits in or faces the Life Palace or the Health Palace. It is a cushion, not a guarantee.
What is self Hua Ke?
When a palace's own stem gives Hua Ke to a star in that palace, it is a self Hua Ke. Born in a Yi or Geng year, your Chen palace has the stem Geng, which gives Hua Ke to Tai Yin; if Tai Yin sits there, the Chen palace self-transforms Ke.
A self Hua Ke reputation comes quickly and fades quickly: things in that area turn out well and win praise, but you rarely work at keeping the name, so people forget. Flying-star schools also say self Ke cares about face and will not ask for help there. To keep the goodwill, deliberately build a record and a body of work.
Decade Hua Ke and yearly Hua Ke
Decade Hua Ke comes from the decade palace's stem and marks where, for ten years, you build a name and meet helpers. In the Life, Career or Parents Palace it is a good decade for study, promotion and qualifications.
Yearly Hua Ke follows the year's stem: Wen Chang in 2026, a Bing Wu year, good for study, exams and paperwork; Tian Ji in 2027, a Ding Wei year, good for planning, research and publishing your expertise. Find that star on your chart to see where you will be noticed this year.
Giving your reputation substance
Hua Ke gives you the chance to be seen; ability has to hold the name up. In its palace, collect things that can be checked: qualifications, work samples, track records and referees. People with Hua Ke also tend to be too proud to ask for help, yet the Hua Ke palace is exactly where help comes most easily. Just ask.
