What is the Tian Liang star?

Tian Liang is Yang Earth, the second star of the Southern Dipper and part of the Tian Fu group. It transforms into shelter and rules the Parents Palace, which is why it is called the elder star or the star of longevity. Shelter works both ways: protecting others and being protected by elders and helpers. Tian Liang people seem older than their years, get asked for advice early, and tend to meet someone who helps at the decisive moment.

Its famous ability to turn bad luck into good assumes there is bad luck to turn. Tian Liang lives often include stretches that must simply be endured, and getting through them builds experience and standing others lack. With Tian Liang in the Life Palace, Tai Yin always sits in the Wealth Palace, Ju Men always sits in the Spouse Palace and Qi Sha always sits in the Parents Palace.

Tian Liang

Tian Liang in the Life Palace: personality

With Tian Liang in the Life Palace you are likely mature, upright and responsible, fond of looking after people and of teaching them, unable to stay quiet when someone is heading the wrong way. You think things through, value principle and reputation, stay calm in a crisis, and are the first person friends call when something goes wrong. There is a touch of aloofness too, and little interest in petty bargaining.

The blind spots are lecturing and standing apart. Good intentions said too bluntly sound like a scolding, and deciding for others can feel controlling. Another kind of Tian Liang tries to fix everything and ends up tangled in other people's disputes. The lesson is to ask whether help is wanted before offering it.

  • Strengths

mature, principled, just, calm in a crisis, protective

  • Watch for

preachy, stubborn, aloof, inclined to manage others

  • Key words

    shelter, longevity, elder, resolution, reputation

Six Tian Liang pairings, by branch

Tian Liang shares a palace only with Tian Tong (Yin and Shen), Tai Yang (Mao and You) and Tian Ji (Chen and Xu), and sits alone in the other six branches. Every layout has Tai Yin in the Wealth Palace and Ju Men in the Spouse Palace, and the trines often hold Tian Ji, Tai Yin and Tian Tong, the refined, steady pattern tradition calls Ji Yue Tong Liang, suited to stable, skilled work.

Tian Liang appearance in tradition

Classical texts describe Tian Liang people with clear, regular features, a long or square face and a steady frame, looking older than their age, speaking at an even pace, with a scholarly or elder's air that improves with the years. With Tian Tong they look rounder and kinder, with Tai Yang brighter and more open, with Tian Ji leaner and sharper. Take it as a portrait of the star, not of you.

Tian Liang for women and men

Women with Tian Liang in the Life Palace are mature, sensible and decisive, good at looking after people, often the one who makes decisions at home and a dependable senior at work. Traditional warnings say she can be too strong and too inclined to manage, which pressures a partner. Today's Tian Liang woman usually has real career drive and knows when to care and when to let go, which steadies her marriage.

Men with Tian Liang are steady, principled and loyal, suited to management, the professions or public service, and trusted by both elders and juniors. The weak spots are lecturing and a lack of romance, offering reasons where tenderness is wanted. For both, marriage is read through the Ju Men that always sits in the Spouse Palace, covered below.

Best careers for Tian Liang

Tian Liang is the shelter star and is also seen as the star of medicine, so it suits work that solves problems, protects people or enforces fair rules. It shines where expertise and trust matter, and because its trines often form Ji Yue Tong Liang, a stable role inside a system usually suits it better than high-risk speculation.

  • Medicine, pharmacy, nursing, elder care and social work
  • Law, inspection, auditing, public service and charities
  • Teaching, research, lecturing and publishing (especially with Tian Ji)
  • Insurance, consulting, arbitration and crisis management
  • Religion, philosophy and metaphysics

Tian Liang and money: Tai Yin always in the Wealth Palace

With Tian Liang in the Life Palace, Tai Yin always sits in the Wealth Palace. Tai Yin rules property and savings, so Tian Liang money tends to arrive steadily: salary, professional fees and long-term savings beat quick money. A Zi or Wu chart pairs it with Tian Ji, Chen or Xu with Tian Tong, Si or Hai with Tai Yang, and the other three have Tai Yin alone; for a Chou chart Tai Yin is strong in You, while a Wei chart has it fallen in Mao, so Chou money is clearly steadier.

Tian Liang cares little about money and loves to stand up for people, so losses often come from solving friends' problems, lending, or backing an unfamiliar investment out of loyalty. Keeping help and money apart is the most important step in protecting your savings.

Tian Liang in love: Ju Men always in the Spouse Palace

With Tian Liang in the Life Palace, Ju Men always sits in the Spouse Palace. Ju Men is the star of speech and dispute, so partners tend to be articulate and full of ideas: you can talk deeply, and one word can start an argument. Ju Men's companion varies: Tian Tong for a Mao or You chart, Tai Yang for Chen or Xu, Tian Ji for Si or Hai, and alone in the other three.

Tian Liang looks after a partner but tends to treat them as someone to guide. Tradition suggests a partner with a bigger age gap; the real point is attitude. Trade lectures for listening and keep the reasoning for work, and a Tian Liang marriage moves from bickering to conversation.

Tian Liang and health

As an Earth star, Tian Liang is traditionally linked with the stomach and digestion. It is also the star of longevity, and tradition holds that its people tend to live long, though pushing through hard years when young can leave small chronic problems. As the star of medicine, it is said to find good doctors when needed. These are traditional reminders, so see a doctor about any real symptoms.

Tian Liang brightness: fallen in Si, Shen and Hai

Tian Liang is brightest (廟) in Zi, Yin, Mao, Chen, Wu and Xu, strong (旺) in Chou and Wei, favoured (得) in You, and fallen (陷) in Si, Shen and Hai. A fallen Tian Liang has weaker shelter: helping others can feel thankless, and helpers arrive later when you are the one in trouble. The Yin and Shen pair shows it clearly: the same Tian Tong with Tian Liang, brightest in Yin and fallen in Shen, with a real difference in steadiness.

Tian Liang's transformations: no Hua Ji

In the standard table from the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, Tian Liang takes Hua Lu in Ren years, Hua Quan in Yi years and Hua Ke in Ji years, and never takes Hua Ji. That fits its sheltering nature: it can become resources, authority or reputation but rarely brings trouble itself. Its companions matter a lot, though: in Yi years Tian Ji takes Hua Lu beside it, and in Ji years Wu Qu takes Hua Lu, so money and name can arrive together.

The example chart is a 庚 year: Tian Liang has no birth-year transformation.

  • 祿Ren years, Hua Lu: shelter becomes real resources

In Ren years Tian Liang takes Hua Lu, and shelter turns into visible benefit: support from elders, chances through helpers, rewards for caring for others. Wu Qu takes Hua Ji the same year, so the palace holding Wu Qu needs a tighter budget.

  • 權Yi years, Hua Quan: more authority, more managing

In Yi years Tian Liang takes Hua Quan: expertise and conviction grow, good for management or supervisory duties, and people take your word. Tian Ji takes Hua Lu the same year, which most helps the Tian Ji pairing. Watch the urge to direct everyone.

  • 科Ji years, Hua Ke: reputation, exams and helpers

In Ji years Tian Liang takes Hua Ke, the transformation of name and learning: good for exams, qualifications, writing and word of mouth, with helpers who step in to mediate. Wen Qu takes Hua Ji the same year, so stay careful with paperwork and words.

Tian Liang in folklore: Li Jing

Popular tradition links Tian Liang with Li Jing from Investiture of the Gods, the garrison commander later revered as the Pagoda-Bearing Heavenly King. He is the classic stern father: forever clashing with his son Nezha, yet always the head of the family and the protector of his region. Tian Liang rules the Parents Palace and stands for shelter, which fits this strict but dependable father. It is a literary device, not a forecast.

Tian Liang as Body Master: born in Yin or Shen years

The Body Master depends on your birth-year branch, and anyone born in a Yin (Tiger) or Shen (Monkey) year has Tian Liang as Body Master. It describes where your effort goes and who you become after midlife: these people grow into the elder of every group, fond of looking after others and settling disputes, and more and more concerned with principle and reputation.

It does not mean Tian Liang sits in your Life Palace. Look at the palace where Tian Liang falls in your chart: that area is what you protect for life. Note that our charts start the year at Lunar New Year rather than Li Chun; anyone born in January or February should go by the chart itself.

The example chart's Life Master is Prosperity and its Body Master is Fire Star.

A decade or year in a Tian Liang palace, and 2026

A ten-year period in the palace holding Tian Liang usually brings a test first and then a reward from helpers or experience: a good time to study, earn professional qualifications, or take on caring or managing roles. When the yearly Life Palace lands on Tian Liang, people hand you their problems, and helping builds your name.

2026 is a Bing Wu year: Tian Tong takes Hua Lu, Tian Ji Hua Quan, Wen Chang Hua Ke and Lian Zhen Hua Ji. A Yin or Shen Tian Liang chart has Tian Tong Hua Lu right in the Life Palace, a Chen or Xu chart has Tian Ji Hua Quan there, and for other Tian Liang charts the palaces holding Tian Tong and Tian Ji show where the year flows best.

Advice for Tian Liang people

Before helping, ask what the other person actually needs, and offer advice as options rather than orders. Keep some time when you look after no one; even a big tree needs water. Tian Liang's gift is endurance, and the secret of enduring long is not carrying every burden yourself.
