This palaceOppositeTrineWhat is the Tai Yin star?
Tai Yin is Yin Water and belongs to the Tian Fu group. Together with Tai Yang it is a middle-sky star, outside both the Northern and Southern Dippers. It transforms into wealth (富), rules property and represents the mother; in a man's chart it also stands for the wife. The moon has no light of its own and shines by reflecting the sun, so Tai Yin's strength lies in keeping, nourishing and accumulating rather than pushing outward.
Wealth here is less a big number than a storeroom that fills over time: savings, a home, the care of family. Tai Yin is a quiet star with a long memory and fine feelings, very aware of mood and of how people treat each other. Think of moonlight at night: not dazzling, but it makes people feel safe.

Tai Yin in the Life Palace: personality
Tai Yin people are usually polite, soft-spoken and perceptive, quick to notice feelings nobody has put into words. Home and security matter a great deal. They like to work things out first and then move step by step, avoid conflict and rarely seek the spotlight. Many have a strong sense of beauty and clear taste in clothes, food and how a home should feel.
The other side follows the phases of the moon. In a good mood they are thoughtful and generous; when something is wrong they go quiet, brood, and sometimes use coolness as armour. They seldom ask for what they need and hope others will simply understand. Learning to say it plainly is the best investment a Tai Yin person can make.

Six Tai Yin pairings, by branch
Tai Yin only shares a palace with Tian Tong, Tai Yang or Tian Ji; in the other six branches it sits alone. Each pair of opposite branches gives the same chart layout, but Tai Yin's brightness can differ sharply between the two, so both levels are shown, for example bright in Zi and dim in Wu.

This palaceOppositeTrineTai Yin appearance in tradition
Classical texts give Tai Yin people a rounded or delicate face, fair or clear skin, soft brows and eyes, and quiet, courteous manners. A bright Tai Yin is said to look fuller and healthier; a fallen one slimmer, with a slightly wistful air. With Tian Tong the face is described as round and sweet, with Tian Ji fine-boned, with Tai Yang open and clear. Enjoy this as folklore; genes and lifestyle decide what you actually look like.
Tai Yin for women and men
Tai Yin is a Yin star and the mother star, so it sits most naturally in a woman's chart. Women with Tai Yin in the Life Palace tend to be gracious, feminine and capable at running a home and a budget. Tradition says Tian Tong with Tai Yin produces beauties; that pairing is affectionate and fond of comfort, while Tian Ji with Tai Yin is clever, soft outside and firm inside. When Tai Yin is dim, the risk is swallowing hurt.
Men with Tai Yin are often courteous, considerate and detail-minded. They do not lead by force but are wonderful at looking after people, the one who remembers everyone's preferences. Because Tai Yin is also the wife star, tradition says such men gain a great deal from their wives, often a real partner in money and daily life. Indecision and inner worry are the things to watch.
Tai Yin careers: the best work for the Moon star
Tai Yin suits steady, detailed work that needs patience and taste, and often feels more at ease behind the scenes than chasing targets at the front. As ruler of property and wealth it has a gift for real estate, finance and asset management; as a natural carer it finds meaning in service, teaching and care work. The moon shines at night, so night shifts, remote work and jobs across time zones often suit it too.
- Finance, accounting, banking, insurance, asset management
- Real estate, interior design, home and lifestyle businesses
- Design, writing, photography, beauty and fashion
- Teaching, nursing, social work, counselling
- Civil service, administration, back-office management (especially within Ji Yue Tong Liang)
Tai Yin and money: Tian Xiang always in the Property Palace
Tai Yin transforms into wealth and is the best saver of the fourteen stars. With Tai Yin in the Life Palace, Tian Xiang always sits in the Property Palace; Tian Xiang is the seal star, so homes and family assets tend to build up in an orderly way, and buying property is often a major life goal. Ju Men always sits in the Fortune Palace, which faces the Wealth Palace, so these people compare and calculate before spending and can worry about money.
Tai Yin money flows like a slow stream: salary, savings, regular investing and property suit it better than quick speculation. A bright Tai Yin has a good feel for money and keeps it. When Tai Yin is fallen or takes Hua Ji, money can leak through moods, family needs or housing problems; a written budget and separate household and personal accounts prevent a lot of stress.
Tai Yin in love: Tian Liang always faces the Spouse Palace
With Tai Yin in the Life Palace, Tian Liang always sits in the Career Palace, which is directly opposite the Spouse Palace. Whatever is in your Spouse Palace, Tian Liang shines on it. Tian Liang is the sheltering star, so Tai Yin longs to be cared for and accepted and is often drawn to mature, steady partners, sometimes a little older. The Spouse Palace itself holds Tian Tong, Tai Yang or Tian Ji, or is empty and borrows, depending on your branch.
In love Tai Yin is tender and romantic, remembers anniversaries and notices small things, but may not mention a hurt and leaves the partner guessing. The real danger is the silent treatment: Tai Yin goes quiet to protect itself while the partner assumes all is fine. Turning a feeling into a simple request, such as dinner together this week, works far better than waiting to be understood.
Does Tai Yin harm the mother? The mother star in tradition
Tai Yin is the mother star, the wife star in a man's chart and the ruler of property, so tradition reads mother, wife and home through its brightness. A popular claim says Tai Yin in the Life Palace harms the mother (剋母). It comes from old texts: when Tai Yin is fallen, takes Hua Ji or meets malefic stars, they read a thinner bond with the mother, a mother who worked very hard, or time spent apart in childhood.
This is not a verdict. A fairer modern reading is that the relationship with your mother needs more care, or that she carried a heavy load while you grew up. With Tai Yin in the Life Palace, Tan Lang always sits in the Parents Palace, which makes family bonds strong and expectations high. Treat the old saying as a nudge to talk and spend time together; the relationship usually grows warmer with that.
Tai Yin and health
As a Water star, Tai Yin is traditionally linked with the kidneys, the urinary and reproductive systems and hormones, and women are reminded to watch menstrual and hormonal changes. Bottled-up feelings and a reversed day-night rhythm are the usual drains. Water, regular sleep and an outlet for emotions do more than any remedy. These are tendencies from tradition only; for any symptom, please see a doctor.
Tai Yin brightness: bright at night, dim by day
Tai Yin is brightest (廟) in Zi, Chou and Hai, strong (旺) in Yin, You and Xu, fair (利) in Shen, dim (不) in Wu and Wei, and fallen (陷) in Mao, Chen and Si. The pattern is easy to remember: the moon rises in You and Xu, is brightest in Hai, Zi and Chou, and fades after daybreak in Mao, Chen and Si. That is why tradition says Tai Yin loves the night palaces and fears the day ones.
Another traditional view holds that Tai Yin people born at night express the star more fully. A bright Tai Yin is warm, prosperous and graceful; a fallen one keeps its sensitivity but worries more and gets back less than it gives. Always weigh brightness together with the companion stars, the transformations and the minor stars before drawing conclusions.

Tai Yin Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke and Hua Ji
Tai Yin transforms five times across the ten stems: Hua Lu in Ding years, Hua Quan in Wu years, Hua Ke in both Geng and Gui years, and Hua Ji in Yi years. It is the only major star with one transformation that appears twice. We use the standard table of the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu; some editions swap Geng's Hua Ke and Hua Ji between Tian Tong and Tai Yin, and our chart follows the standard version. The year changes at Lunar New Year, not at Li Chun.
科The example chart is a 庚 year, so Tai Yin takes Hua Ke.
祿Tai Yin Hua Lu (Ding years)
Money flows in steadily through savings, property and businesses tied to women or the home, and relationships soften. A Ding year also brings Tian Tong Hua Quan, Tian Ji Hua Ke and Ju Men Hua Ji.
權Tai Yin Hua Quan (Wu years)
Gentleness gains authority: a talent for managing money, a household or assets, and more courage to ask for what you and your family need. Wu years also bring Tan Lang Hua Lu, You Bi Hua Ke and Tian Ji Hua Ji.
科Tai Yin Hua Ke (Geng years)
A gentle, good reputation: taste and care get noticed, and paperwork, design and financial planning earn praise. Our chart follows the standard Geng table, with Tian Tong as Hua Ji.
科Tai Yin Hua Ke (Gui years)
In Gui years Tai Yin Hua Ke brings helpful people and good word of mouth; someone tends to smooth things over in a crisis. Gui years also bring Po Jun Hua Lu, Ju Men Hua Quan and Tan Lang Hua Ji.
忌Tai Yin Hua Ji (Yi years)
Inner worry, knots with a mother or a partner, or extra anxiety over property and savings; the palace it lands in needs the most patience. It is not bad luck. Turn worry into plans, such as spreading savings or preparing a mortgage early, and it makes you a careful builder.
Tai Yin in folklore: Lady Jia and the moon goddess
In the popular Investiture of the Gods pairings, Tai Yin is Lady Jia, wife of the general Huang Feihu. She is gracious, devoted to family and fiercely protective of her honour, even against King Zhou himself, echoing Tai Yin's soft surface and firm principles. This comes from fiction and folk custom; it helps you remember the star but plays no part in reading a chart. In folk religion, the Tai Yin Star Lord is the moon deity, often called Yue Niang and linked with the image of Chang'e.
A decade or year in a Tai Yin palace
When a ten-year period reaches the palace holding Tai Yin, the focus often turns to family, home and inner life: settling down, buying a place, caring for relatives, or shifting at work from sprinting to building. A year whose Life Palace meets Tai Yin is often a year of saving and putting life in order; if Tai Yin takes Hua Lu that year, income and goodwill tend to rise gently, a good time for property or long-term saving. When it is fallen or takes Hua Ji, slow down and mind your moods.
Advice for Tai Yin people
Give your need for security a practical floor: an emergency fund, a comfortable home and regular time alone. When something hurts, say it the same day instead of letting it grow overnight. Tai Yin's strength is slow accumulation, so there is no need to race anyone; give yourself time and the moon fills on its own.
