What Hua Quan means: power, drive and responsibility
Quan means authority, the handle of power. A star with Hua Quan gets a grip: it can decide, push things through and live with the result. In its palace you want the final word and usually have the skill to earn it. The difference from Hua Lu is direction: Lu arrives by itself, Quan is what you go out and take.
Start with the star. Hua Quan on Zi Wei or Tai Yang is the power of leadership and standing, on Wu Qu or Po Jun the power to execute and break new ground, on Ju Men or Tian Liang the authority of expertise and words. Then the palace: Quan does its best work in the Life and Career palaces, while in relationship palaces such as Spouse or Children, remember that power is for carrying weight, not for managing people. Finally, check for Hua Ji or malefic stars, which decide whether the force runs with you or against you.

Which stars take Hua Quan in each year stem
Like Hua Lu, Hua Quan always lands on a major star, never an auxiliary one. Zi Wei never takes Lu or Ji, but it does take Quan in Ren years, the emperor star at its most natural.
| Stem | Years ending in | 權Hua Quan |
|---|---|---|
| 甲 | Po Jun | |
| 乙 | Tian Liang | |
| 丙 | Tian Ji | |
| 丁 | Tian Tong | |
| 戊 | Tai Yin | |
| 己 | Tan Lang | |
| 庚Example | Wu Qu | |
| 辛 | Tai Yang | |
| 壬 | Zi Wei | |
| 癸 | Ju Men |
- The Zi Wei year changes at Lunar New Year (正月初一), not at 立春, so births in January or early February may take the stem of the year before.
Po Jun Hua Quan (Jia years)
Po Jun already charges ahead; Hua Quan gives it direction, so it does not just break things but leads reform and opens new ground. Good for founders, turnarounds and crisis work; the danger is haste and tearing down what still works.
Tian Liang Hua Quan (Yi years)
The authority of an elder: words that carry weight and a readiness to step in and settle disputes, so people make you the referee or mentor. It comes from experience and principle; the trap is lecturing and wanting a say in everything.
Tian Ji Hua Quan (Bing years)
In Bing years the power goes to the star that loves to think, so ideas finally have someone to sign them off. Roles that set strategy, design processes and rewrite rules feel this Quan most. It works through judgement, not volume, and often has the last word in the meeting.
Tian Tong Hua Quan (Ding years)
Gentle Tian Tong with Hua Quan is soft outside and firm inside: easy-going most days, unbending when it matters, and good at keeping everyone content. Its power is coordination, the knack of making a group comfortable enough to follow.
Tai Yin Hua Quan (Wu years)
Tai Yin Hua Quan leads in money and household matters: budgets, homes and logistics. It is quiet, patient power, better at controlling details behind the scenes than giving orders up front.
Tan Lang Hua Quan (Ji years)
Tan Lang Hua Quan turns desire into ambition: strong social skill and the ability to make contacts, talent and fun into influence. Sales, PR, entertainment and creative work suit it; the risk is ambition pointing in too many directions at once.
- Example
Wu Qu Hua Quan (Geng years)
Wu Qu is both a wealth star and a general, so its Hua Quan brings the strongest grip on execution and finance, decisive with money and people alike. It suits finance, management and disciplined work; leave some flexibility for people.
Tai Yang Hua Quan (Xin years)
Tai Yang Hua Quan is public authority: on stage, leading crowds, speaking for a group. It gives influence and pull, shining most when Tai Yang sits in a bright palace; where Tai Yang is fallen, it tends to overwork itself.
Zi Wei Hua Quan (Ren years)
The emperor star with Hua Quan has the most regal feel of all ten: decisiveness, organising power and presence, so it tends to end up in charge. Zi Wei already values dignity, which makes learning to delegate and listen matter even more.
Ju Men Hua Quan (Gui years)
Ju Men Hua Quan gives speech and expertise authority: people listen and are persuaded, which suits teaching, law, negotiation, criticism and research. It also keeps Ju Men's usual gossip in check, though in debate it can refuse to let go.
Hua Quan in the 12 palaces
The palace with Hua Quan is where you push hardest and where you want to steer. These notes are for the birth-year Hua Quan; decade and yearly Hua Quan point the same way on a different time scale.
- 命Life PalaceHua Quan in the Life Palace: decisive, with strong opinions and the backbone to carry responsibility, so you often end up leading. You may not take advice easily; asking before deciding makes your authority more convincing.
- 兄弟Siblings PalaceHua Quan in the Siblings Palace: strong-willed siblings or peers, perhaps a capable older sibling, perhaps a partner who competes for the lead. Agree on roles and who decides before working together.
- 夫妻Spouse PalaceHua Quan in the Spouse Palace: drawn to capable, decisive people, and who runs the home becomes the first thing to work out. Splitting areas, you on money and them on the house, works better than winning every point.
- 子女Children PalaceHua Quan in the Children Palace: children with minds of their own and a competitive streak who push back against hard discipline. You also have real influence on students and juniors, which suits teaching and leading.
- 財帛Wealth PalaceHua Quan in the Wealth Palace: firm views on money and a wish to control the cash flow; income comes from ability and nerve, and you will take bigger positions. Set stop-losses so confidence does not turn into stubbornness.
- 疾厄Health PalaceHua Quan in the Health Palace: strong stamina and willpower, and a habit of pushing through illness; tradition warns that symptoms can come on suddenly. Build in rest and check-ups, and see a doctor for anything real.
- 遷移Travel PalaceHua Quan in the Travel Palace: capable and forceful away from home, suited to working in other cities, overseas postings or negotiating for others. You are given responsibility outside, and may make rivals there.
- 交友Friends PalaceExample chartHua Quan in the Friends Palace: friends, staff or clients with strong personalities, or friends who sway your decisions. You can rally a team, but watch being steered by the people around you.
- 官祿Career PalaceHua Quan in the Career Palace: ambitious, suited to management or any role where you make the calls, and promoted on merit. Clear authority brings out your best; when tied down, you are tempted to go it alone.
- 田宅Property PalaceHua Quan in the Property Palace: you run the household, have firm ideas about where and how to live, and may take charge of family assets. In a shared home, leave some decisions to others.
- 福德Fortune PalaceHua Quan in the Fortune Palace: high inner standards and a mind that will not rest, with hobbies that are challenges: competition, study or a side business. Satisfaction comes from control, so practising letting go matters.
- 父母Parents PalaceHua Quan in the Parents Palace: strict, strong-minded parents or bosses, perhaps early pressure that also taught discipline. With superiors, respect their authority first, then make your case.
Hua Quan combinations: with Hua Lu, Hua Ji and Hua Ke
When Hua Quan shares a palace with another transformation or meets one across the trine, its force changes direction. These three pairings come up most often.
Quan and Lu together: power with money
Hua Quan and Hua Lu in one palace, or meeting across its three sides and four squares, mean ability and resources arrive together: the chance and the skill to catch it. A strong pairing for career and wealth, common in people who lead teams that earn; the risk is expanding too fast while things are easy.
Quan and Ji together: force that meets resistance
Hua Quan with Hua Ji in one palace means wanting control and meeting obstacles: the harder you grip, the less things follow the plan, and energy drains into conflict. Shift from controlling the outcome to controlling what is yours to do, and the pairing turns into resilience.
Quan and Ke: ability with recognition
Hua Quan brings real strength and Hua Ke brings a good name, so together they mean being capable and seen to be. They suit roles where expertise, management and public image all matter; keep delivering results to back up the reputation.
What is self Hua Quan?
A palace's own stem giving Hua Quan to a star inside it is a self Hua Quan. Born in a Jia or Ji year, both your Zi and Yin palaces carry the stem Bing, which gives Hua Quan to Tian Ji; if Tian Ji sits in either one, that palace self-transforms Quan.
Flying-star schools read it as drive that gets used up on its own: you hold strong views in that area and make and change decisions yourself, leaving little room for others. You act fast but may not finish, or overturn today's decision tomorrow. In the Life Palace this makes you changeable; in the Career Palace, quick to switch tracks.
Decade Hua Quan and yearly Hua Quan
Decade Hua Quan comes from the decade palace's stem and marks where, for ten years, you hold the most authority and carry the most weight. Entering the Life or Career Palace, it often means promotion, a business of your own or a big responsibility; entering the Spouse Palace, watch the balance of power in the relationship.
Yearly Hua Quan follows the year's stem: Tian Ji in 2026, a Bing Wu year, and Tian Tong in 2027, a Ding Wei year. The palace holding Tian Ji this year is where to plan actively and make the call; in a Quan year, dithering is the real waste.
Using Hua Quan well
Hua Quan's great value is that it makes you willing to take responsibility; its great risk is that responsibility becomes control. In its palace, practise three things: hear people out before deciding, commit fully once you have, and when things go off plan, change the method instead of pressing harder. Used steadily, Quan makes people see you as dependable rather than forceful.
