This palaceOppositeTrineWhat is the Tian Ji star?
Tian Ji is Yin Wood and the third star of the Southern Dipper. Classical texts call it the star that 'adds to the reckoning', give it charge of siblings, and say it transforms into kindness (善). It belongs to the Zi Wei group and always sits one branch behind Zi Wei, like the adviser standing beside the emperor.
Kindness here means good intentions carried out by good method: Tian Ji wants to think things through and likes solving problems for other people. It is a moving star, but what moves is the mind. It changes methods, jobs and surroundings in small steps, unlike Qi Sha or Po Jun, which tear things down and rebuild.

Tian Ji in the Life Palace: personality
With Tian Ji in the Life Palace you tend to be quick, observant and a fast learner, usually with two or three plans ready before a problem arrives. Curiosity runs high: new ideas, tools and theories are hard to resist, and friends come to you for advice.
The same gift has a shadow. Thinking too much leads to hesitation, second-guessing and several projects started at once. Tian Ji's worry rarely comes from outside; it comes from a mind that will not stop running scenarios. A deadline for each decision helps more than one more option.

Six Tian Ji pairings, by branch
Star positions in Zi Wei Dou Shu follow fixed rules, so the branch Tian Ji sits in also fixes its companions. Tian Ji only ever shares a palace with Tai Yin, Ju Men or Tian Liang; everywhere else it sits alone. That gives six patterns, each covering a pair of opposite branches.

This palaceOppositeTrineTian Ji appearance in tradition
Classical descriptions give Tian Ji people a medium build, a longish or slender face, fine features and lively eyes, an alert and well-mannered look. A bright Tian Ji is said to fill out more; a fallen one, or one paired with Ju Men, runs lean. Treat this as folklore rather than prediction.
Tian Ji for women and men
Women with Tian Ji in the Life Palace are quick and organised, often the strategist of the family or team. Old texts call female Tian Ji 'clever and restless'; in modern terms, a busy mind that wants varied, thinking work. In love she needs a partner who can keep up with her ideas.
Men with Tian Ji tend to be courteous and analytical, not always forceful but very good at planning the whole picture. Technical, strategic or professional roles suit them better than the front line. Setting deadlines for decisions makes them seem far more dependable.
Best careers for Tian Ji
Tian Ji earns with its mind and dislikes repetitive work. An old saying warns that Tian Ji should not run its own business: it plans brilliantly but does not love risk. If you do start a company, pair up with someone decisive.

Tian Ji and money: Tian Tong always in the Wealth Palace
When Tian Ji holds the Life Palace, Tian Tong always sits in the Wealth Palace. Tian Tong is the star of ease, so these people prefer income that is comfortable and sustainable and rarely chase money at any cost. With Tian Liang alongside, money comes through expertise and service; with Ju Men, through speaking, teaching or advising.
Tian Ji money is 'brain money': salaries and professional fees beat speculation. The usual leak is changing plans midway and scattering effort. Building one skill over years pays far better than chasing every opportunity.
Tian Ji in love: Tai Yang always in the Spouse Palace
With Tian Ji in the Life Palace, Tai Yang always sits in the Spouse Palace, so the attraction is to warm, outgoing, ambitious partners, usually more extroverted than you. Tai Yang's brightness colours the match: Tian Ji in Wu puts Tai Yang in Chen, a strong position and a generous partner; Tian Ji in Zi puts it in Xu, where it is dim and the partner gives a lot but tires.
Tian Ji wants a meeting of minds and thinks hard about the partner's needs, but can blow small things up by replaying them. Saying the thought out loud does more than rehearsing it ten times.
Tian Ji and health
As a Wood star, Tian Ji is traditionally linked with the liver and gallbladder, the nerves and the limbs, and its people often sleep lightly because the mind keeps working. Regular exercise and real downtime matter more for them than for most. These are tendencies from tradition; see a doctor for anything real.
Tian Ji brightness by branch
Tian Ji is brightest (廟) in Zi and Wu, strong (旺) in Mao and You, favoured (得) in Yin and Shen, fair (利) in Chen and Xu, average (平) in Si and Hai, and fallen (陷) in Chou and Wei. Bright, it thinks clearly and judges well; fallen, it stays clever but restless, with more plans than results. Brightness is only the starting point: read it with the companion stars, transformations and minor stars.

Tian Ji Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke and Hua Ji
Tian Ji takes all four transformations across the ten stems: Hua Lu in Yi years, Hua Quan in Bing years, Hua Ke in Ding years and Hua Ji in Wu years. Your birth-year stem tells you which applies; Zi Wei Dou Shu changes the year at Lunar New Year.
The example chart is a 庚 year: Tian Ji has no birth-year transformation.
祿Tian Ji Hua Lu (Yi years)
Ideas turn into opportunity and income through planning, information, technology or brokering. Money and goodwill arrive with movement; the more it moves, the more it gains.
權Tian Ji Hua Quan (Bing years)
Judgement and drive grow stronger, so plans leave the page and get done. The risk is overconfidence and not listening to others.
科Tian Ji Hua Ke (Ding years)
Clear, well-ordered thinking that earns recognition for expertise; exams, writing and teaching go well.
忌Tian Ji Hua Ji (Wu years)
Overthinking and second-guessing, with plans that stall at the last step. The palace it falls in is where you are most likely to go round in circles. Settle one thing before starting the next.
Tian Ji in folklore: Jiang Ziya
In the novel Investiture of the Gods and popular tradition, Tian Ji is Jiang Ziya, the strategist who met King Wen past the age of seventy and planned the overthrow of the Shang. He embodies Tian Ji's planning, late success and service to others. The link is literary, a memory aid, not a calculation.
Tian Ji as Body Master
The Body Master is set by your birth-year branch: everyone born in a Snake (巳) or Pig (亥) year has Tian Ji as Body Master. It suggests that, as life goes on, you handle things by analysing and adjusting, and that experience and expertise guide your choices in middle age. See the Life Master and Body Master guide for the full table.
The example chart's Life Master is Prosperity and its Body Master is Fire Star.
Life Master and Body Master lookupA decade or year in a Tian Ji palace
When your ten-year period reaches the palace holding Tian Ji, expect change and learning: a new job or city, new skills, or constant adjustment where you are. A Tian Ji year is often a year of many ideas. Your mind is the main asset; the risk is planning too much, doing too little, or missing the moment while hesitating.
Advice for Tian Ji people
Write ideas down and rank them, then finish one at a time. Give important decisions a deadline and decide when it arrives. Keep time for exercise and doing nothing. Tian Ji's intelligence needs an anchor; once it has one, change feeds you instead of draining you.
