Empty PalaceWhen Your Life Palace Has No Major Star

Open a chart and you may find a palace with none of the fourteen major stars in it. That is an empty palace (空宮), and when it is the Life Palace people say the Life Palace has no major star. With fourteen stars and twelve palaces, most charts have two empty palaces, so this is a feature of the system rather than a flaw. This guide explains why empty palaces occur, how borrowing works, the twelve borrowed pairs for an empty Life Palace and what an empty palace means in each area of life. Add your birth details and the tool shows which of your palaces are empty and which two stars each one borrows.

What an empty palace is

An empty palace is one that none of the fourteen major stars occupies. It may still hold minor stars such as Zuo Fu, You Bi, Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Qing Yang or Tuo Luo, and it may still receive a birth-year transformation, but no Zi Wei, Tian Ji, Tai Yang or other major star anchors it. An empty Life Palace is what people mean when they say a chart has no major star in the Life Palace.

Empty does not mean lacking, and it does not mean that area of life holds nothing. It means the palace has no fixed keynote, so you assemble its picture from the stars opposite, from its trine and from the minor stars inside. It takes one extra step to read, and once you have read it, that flexibility turns out to be the point.

Why empty palaces exist and how many a chart can have

Fourteen stars never divide evenly into twelve palaces: wherever two stars share a palace, another palace goes without. In practice the number of empty palaces takes only three values, and Zi Wei's position decides which. With Zi Wei in Yin or Shen, Zi Wei pairs with Tian Fu and Lian Zhen with Tian Xiang, the fourteen stars fill all twelve palaces exactly, and the chart has no empty palace. With Zi Wei in Si or Hai there are six double-star palaces, which leaves four empty. In the other eight positions there are always two.

Two empty palaces is therefore the most common case and nothing unusual. Two more rules always hold. First, the palace opposite an empty one always holds two major stars, so there is always something to borrow. Second, two empty palaces never face each other. An empty Life Palace in Zi or Wu always faces Tian Tong and Tai Yin; in Chen or Xu, Tian Ji and Tian Liang; in Si or Hai, Lian Zhen and Tan Lang. In Chou, Wei, Yin, Shen, Mao or You there are three possible pairs.

Borrowing from the opposite palace: the rules

The basic method is to borrow from the opposite palace: with no major star at home, you read the major stars directly across the chart as the palace's colouring. An empty Life Palace borrows from the Travel Palace, an empty Wealth Palace from the Fortune Palace, an empty Spouse Palace from the Career Palace, and so on. Borrowed stars shine in from across the chart, so their influence is weaker and less direct than stars sitting in the palace: the flavour is there, only thinner. Their brightness is still taken from the branch where they actually sit.

Look at what is inside the palace as well. With no major star to anchor them, minor stars in an empty palace count for more than usual: an empty Life Palace with Wen Chang and Wen Qu has a strongly scholarly air, while Qing Yang and Tuo Luo make its sharp edges more visible. Schools differ on whether the borrowed stars' birth-year transformations come along: some borrow Hua Lu and Hua Ji with the stars, others borrow only the stars' nature and leave the transformations where they are. Finally, read the trine, because the strength of the two trine palaces decides much of an empty palace's strength.

No major star in the Life Palace: the 12 borrowed pairs

When the Life Palace is empty, the Travel Palace opposite always holds a pair of major stars, and there are twelve possible pairs. They are listed below by the branch of the Life Palace, with a note on how the two branches differ, because the same stars borrowed from a bright branch or a dim one read differently.

  • Empty Life Palace facing Tian Tong and Tai Yin (Life in Zi or Wu)

Borrowing Tian Tong and Tai Yin makes for a gentle, sentimental person who loves comfort and calm and picks up the mood of a room. With the Life Palace in Wu, the pair comes from Zi, where Tian Tong is Wang and Tai Yin Miao: soft but steady. With the Life Palace in Zi, it comes from Wu, where they are fallen and Bu, so feelings sit closer to the surface and routine and close people matter more. Both have Tai Yang and Ju Men in the Wealth Palace, tying income to speaking, teaching or public work, and an empty Career Palace.

  • Empty Life Palace facing Tian Tong and Ju Men (Life in Chou or Wei)

Tian Tong and Ju Men are both Bu in Chou and Wei, so this type looks easy-going but thinks a lot, keeps its own counsel and holds firm private standards. The trine makes the difference. With the Life Palace in Wei, the Wealth Palace holds Tai Yang and Tian Liang, both Miao, and the Career Palace a Miao Tai Yin: strong outside support and a road that gets smoother. With the Life Palace in Chou, Tai Yang is Ping, Tian Liang De and Tai Yin fallen, so expertise has to be built up more on your own.

  • Empty Life Palace facing Tai Yang and Tai Yin (Life in Chou or Wei)

Sun and Moon shine into the Life Palace together, mixing Tai Yang's openness with Tai Yin's reserve: lively one day, quiet the next, with mood and routine swayed by surroundings. Tradition sees this pairing as one that does well away from home. A Wei Life Palace borrows from Chou, where Tai Yang is Bu and Tai Yin Miao, so the temperament leans soft and careful. A Chou Life Palace borrows from Wei, where Tai Yang is De and Tai Yin Bu, so it leans active. Both have Tian Ji and Ju Men in Wealth and a Miao Tian Tong in Career.

  • Empty Life Palace facing Wu Qu and Tan Lang (Life in Chou or Wei)

Wu Qu and Tan Lang are both Miao in Chou and Wei. Borrowed, they give a practical person who also knows how to enjoy life: clear about what they want and willing to work for it, though often waiting for the right opening before moving. Tradition says this pair tends to blossom in middle age, and borrowed it is even more of a slow burner. Tian Xiang in Wealth and Tian Fu in Career keep money and position steady, but Tian Xiang is fallen here, so take care with spending and with guaranteeing other people's loans. This layout only occurs with Zi Wei in Si or Hai, in a chart with four empty palaces.

  • Empty Life Palace facing Tian Tong and Tian Liang (Life in Yin or Shen)

Tian Tong and Tian Liang give a kind, protective manner, a little old for its years, with a streak that hates being tied down. With the Life Palace in Shen, the pair comes from Yin (Tian Tong Li, Tian Liang Miao), and Tai Yang is Wang in Wealth: honest money and a growing name. With the Life Palace in Yin, it comes from Shen (Tian Tong Wang, Tian Liang fallen), and Tai Yang is Bu in Wealth, so you may give more than you get back and should price your expertise properly. Both have a Wang Ju Men in Career, suited to teaching, counselling, medicine or service work that runs on talk.

  • Empty Life Palace facing Tian Ji and Tai Yin (Life in Yin or Shen)

This type is observant, sensitive and a good planner, with deep feelings it rarely shows, and life tends to bring house moves and job changes. Tian Ji is De in both branches; Tai Yin makes the difference, Wang when borrowed from Yin and Li when borrowed from Shen, so a Shen Life Palace is the steadier one emotionally. The biggest gap is Tai Yang in Career: Wang in Wu for a Yin Life Palace, a bigger stage; fallen in Zi for a Shen Life Palace, better behind the scenes or in specialist work. Ju Men is fallen in Wealth in both, so put money terms in writing.

  • Empty Life Palace facing Tai Yang and Ju Men (Life in Yin or Shen)

Tai Yang and Ju Men make a persuasive talker who likes to argue a case and is sensitive to public opinion, often at home in teaching, sales or media. The three sides here are special: Tian Ji and Tian Liang in Wealth and Tian Tong and Tai Yin in Career surround the Life Palace with all four stars of the Ji Yue Tong Liang pattern, which thrives in well-run organisations. In a Shen Life Palace, Tian Tong (Wang) and Tai Yin (Miao) in Career are both bright and work is stable; in a Yin Life Palace they are fallen and Bu, and the urge to change jobs comes more often.

  • Empty Life Palace facing Tai Yang and Tian Liang (Life in Mao or You)

Tai Yang and Tian Liang give warmth, a sense of justice and a habit of standing up for others, along with real concern about being respected. A You Life Palace borrows the pair from Mao, where both are Miao, the brightest version: open, honest and trusted. A Mao Life Palace borrows from You, where Tai Yang is Ping and Tian Liang De: less heat and more restraint. Both have a Ping Tian Ji in Wealth, best for steady professional income, and Tian Tong with Ju Men in Career, where tactful wording pays. The Spouse Palace is empty in this layout too.

  • Empty Life Palace facing Zi Wei and Tan Lang (Life in Mao or You)

Zi Wei and Tan Lang bring presence and charm, wide interests and a taste for the good life, so this person gets noticed in a crowd. Tradition is wary of Zi Wei sharing a palace with the peach-blossom star, as if charm could overrule the emperor's judgement. Borrowed, social skill and an eye for beauty are the strengths, and clear boundaries keep them from causing trouble. Both branches borrow a Wang Zi Wei and a Li Tan Lang, and the trine is the same: Tian Xiang in Wealth and a Miao Tian Fu in Career give money and position a solid base. The Siblings Palace is empty as well.

  • Empty Life Palace facing Tian Ji and Ju Men (Life in Mao or You)

Tian Ji and Ju Men give a quick, analytical mind, an orderly way of speaking and a need to get to the bottom of things, well suited to research, technology, law, consulting or teaching. Both branches borrow a Wang Tian Ji and a Miao Ju Men. The classical praise for this pair refers to it sitting in Mao itself; borrowed into a You Life Palace it is a little less forceful, but the specialist path still works. Tian Liang is fallen in Wealth, so earn through fees for expertise rather than speculation. The Career Palace holds Tai Yang and Tai Yin together.

  • Empty Life Palace facing Tian Ji and Tian Liang (Life in Chen or Xu)

Tian Ji and Tian Liang make a sharp analyst and adviser who can explain anything convincingly, suited to consulting, planning, education and staff roles. This layout always comes in a chart with four empty palaces, with the Life, Wealth and Spouse palaces all empty at once. The Wealth Palace then borrows Tian Tong and Tai Yin from the Fortune Palace: a Xu Life Palace borrows them bright from Zi, calm and careful with money; a Chen Life Palace borrows them dim from Wu, so income moves with mood. Tai Yang and Ju Men always fill the Career Palace: explaining, teaching and speaking up are how you get ahead.

  • Empty Life Palace facing Lian Zhen and Tan Lang (Life in Si or Hai)

Lian Zhen and Tan Lang are both fallen in Si and Hai. Shining into the Life Palace, they bring strong curiosity, social pull and a love of beauty and pleasure, and desires that need managing. The good news is solid support from the trine: Tian Xiang in Wealth and Tian Fu in Career flank the Life Palace from both sides. In a Si Life Palace, Tian Xiang is Miao and Tian Fu Wang; in Hai both are De. Put the charm and the ideas into one craft and this layout does very well.

An empty palace in each of the 12 palaces

Any palace can be empty, not only the Life Palace. Each borrows from the palace directly opposite, and each pair of opposite palaces colours the other. Here is what an empty palace means in each.

The upside of an empty palace: room to grow

An empty palace is easy to misread as missing something. It is closer to a room not yet furnished. A palace with a major star has a clear character, with fixed strengths and fixed weaknesses; an empty one has no keynote, so it absorbs new conditions from the decade and year layers more readily, and a new ten-year period can give it a new face. People with an empty Life Palace are often described as adaptable, quick to learn and able to play many roles. That flexibility is the real power of an empty palace.

Using it well is practical. Choose your surroundings with care, because the borrowed stars come from the opposite palace and your circle amplifies or mutes them. Pay attention to the minor stars and transformations inside, which carry extra weight in an empty palace. And watch the decades: a ten-year period that reaches bright stars, Hua Lu or Hua Quan is often when an empty palace comes into its own.
