This palaceOppositeTrineWhat does the Tan Lang star mean?
Tan Lang is Yang Wood with a Water body, the first of the seven Northern Dipper stars, and part of the Tian Fu group. Classical texts say it governs fortune and misfortune and transforms into peach blossom. Peach blossom here means far more than romance: good food, art, socialising, money, the occult and anything new all whet Tan Lang's appetite.
The name means greedy wolf: greed for the desire, wolf for the drive to go and get it. Desire is the fuel. Used well it is ambition and charisma; used badly it is biting off more than you can chew. With Tan Lang in the Life Palace, Qi Sha and Po Jun always complete the trine, the Sha Po Lang pattern: a fast, changeable, pioneering life.

Tan Lang in the Life Palace: personality
Tan Lang people are warm, outgoing and quick, learn fast and have startlingly wide interests: cocktails this week, a photography class next month, Zi Wei Dou Shu after that. They read people well, thrive in a crowd, lift the mood and are very persuasive.
The same fire is their lesson. Many desires mean scattered focus, with much tried and little finished, and a love of pleasure can let food, fun or spending run away. Tan Lang grows by learning to choose. Narrow the wants down to one or two real goals and the energy turns into remarkable results.

Six Tan Lang pairings, by branch
Tan Lang only shares a palace with Zi Wei, Wu Qu or Lian Zhen, and sits alone in Zi-Wu, Yin-Shen and Chen-Xu. Whatever the branch, a Tan Lang Life Palace always has Po Jun in the Wealth Palace and Qi Sha in the Career Palace; the companion and opposite stars supply the colour.

This palaceOppositeTrineTan Lang appearance in tradition
Old texts describe Tan Lang people as medium to sturdy in build, with a long or round face, strong brows, bright eyes, a resonant voice and a laugh that spreads. A bright Tan Lang is said to be solidly built; a fallen one smaller or slimmer, with a restless gaze. Zi Wei with Tan Lang is called elegant, Wu Qu with Tan Lang rugged, and Lian Zhen with Tan Lang fine-featured with star quality. Take it as folklore; genes and habits decide.
Tan Lang for women and men
A woman with Tan Lang in the Life Palace is usually striking and charming, dresses well, socialises easily, works fast and has no wish for a dull life. Old texts warned that female Tan Lang carries heavy peach blossom; today we would say she attracts people and knows what she wants. With clear boundaries in love, that charm is a huge asset for career and network. Varied work with a stage of some kind suits her.
A man with Tan Lang tends to be generous, talkative and action-driven, with a big circle, plenty of social engagements and the nerve to take on hard challenges. His lesson is focus: too many interests open too many fronts, and in love he can promise too fast. Pick one main field and spend that social skill on long-term trust, and his reach becomes very wide.
Best careers for Tan Lang
Tan Lang's talent lies in people and desire: it knows what others want and how to get them to say yes. Any work that needs socialising, persuasion, performance, creativity or risk suits it, and the Sha Po Lang structure makes change feel normal, so business ownership, sales and new industries are common stages. Tradition links Tan Lang in the Life Palace with entertainers and star salespeople, both trades that run on charm.
- Sales, marketing, public relations, brand building
- Acting, hosting, music, dance, fashion and beauty
- Food and drink, entertainment, travel and leisure
- Business ownership, investing, trading (especially with Wu Qu)
- Religion, metaphysics, wellness and medicine (Tan Lang also rules mysticism and health care)
Tan Lang and money: Po Jun always in the Wealth Palace
With Tan Lang in the Life Palace, Po Jun always sits in the Wealth Palace. Po Jun is the star of spending and of breaking down to rebuild, so Tan Lang money moves in big waves: bold spending and investing, and the nerve to start again after a loss. Po Jun sits alone there for Zi-Wu, Yin-Shen and Chen-Xu charts and joins Lian Zhen for Chou-Wei, Wu Qu for Mao-You and Zi Wei for Si-Hai, each with its own scale and stability.
Tradition also speaks of the Fire Tan (火貪) and Bell Tan (鈴貪) patterns: Tan Lang with the Fire Star or Bell Star is said to bring sudden chances or windfalls, prized most when Tan Lang is bright in the four tomb branches. Such booms come and go fast; what counts is keeping some of it. Save a fixed share and steer clear of heavy leverage, and windfalls become real assets.
Tan Lang in love: Tian Fu always in the Spouse Palace
With Tan Lang in the Life Palace, Tian Fu always sits in the Spouse Palace. Tian Fu is the treasury star, steady and conservative, so for all its romances Tan Lang tends to settle with someone reliable who runs a good home, a harbour for a ship that sails everywhere. Tian Fu sits with Lian Zhen, Wu Qu or Zi Wei in three layouts and alone in the other three, so the partner ranges from shrewd to practical to strong-willed.
In love Tan Lang is passionate, romantic and good at surprises, but its attention can drift once the novelty fades. A Tian Fu partner values stability and trust above all. If Tan Lang pours its appetite for adventure into shared travel, hobbies and projects rather than outside the relationship, marriage becomes one of its steadiest assets.
Tan Lang and peach blossom: what the romance star really means
Tan Lang is called the first peach blossom star, with Lian Zhen second. Its peach blossom is charm and popularity: it dresses well, talks well, knows how to please and gets noticed wherever it goes. Romance is only one face. Socialising, performing, and a taste for fine food, wine and metaphysics are all Tan Lang peach blossom too.
Old texts describe a peach blossom in flood pattern (泛水桃花), roughly Tan Lang in a Water palace such as Zi or Hai meeting Qing Yang, Tuo Luo or minor romance stars, read as love that overflows and trouble born of desire. It is a traditional warning, not a sentence. The healthy view treats Tan Lang peach blossom as a people talent: a plus in work, social life and creative work, and no problem in a relationship with clear boundaries.
Tan Lang and health
Tan Lang is Wood with a Water body, so tradition links it with the liver and gallbladder, the kidneys and the reproductive system. As the star of appetite, its usual drains are late nights, rich food, drinking and constant socialising. Rest days and a drink limit set in advance beat any repair later. These are traditional tendencies, not diagnoses; if something feels wrong, see a doctor.
Tan Lang bright and fallen
Tan Lang is brightest (廟) in the four tomb branches Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei, strong (旺) in Zi and Wu, fair (利) in Mao and You, average (平) in Yin and Shen, and fallen (陷) in Si and Hai. Bright, its desires have direction and its talent and ambition turn into results; this is also where the Fire Tan and Bell Tan patterns are prized. Fallen, the passion remains but scatters and indulges more easily.
In Si and Hai Tan Lang shares the palace with Lian Zhen and both are fallen, a rare double fall that old texts judge most cautiously. Yet no chart reader stops at brightness: with Lu Cun, Hua Lu or the helper stars Zuo Fu and You Bi, a fallen Tan Lang can still put its gifts in the right place.

Tan Lang Hua Lu, Hua Quan and Hua Ji
Tan Lang transforms three times across the ten stems: Hua Lu in Wu years, Hua Quan in Ji years and Hua Ji in Gui years, never Hua Ke. Zi Wei Dou Shu changes the year at Lunar New Year, so if you were born in January or early February, check your lunar year before looking up your birth-year transformations.
The example chart is a 庚 year: Tan Lang has no birth-year transformation.
祿Tan Lang Hua Lu (Wu years)
Desire becomes income: networking, sales, entertainment and side businesses pay, popularity and good food abound, and romance is at its liveliest. The same year gives Tai Yin Hua Quan, You Bi Hua Ke and Tian Ji Hua Ji.
權Tan Lang Hua Quan (Ji years)
Desire gains control: stronger ambition, the nerve to claim resources and a lead role in sales, management or a craft, with a competitive streak to watch. Ji years run Wu Qu Hua Lu, Tan Lang Hua Quan, Tian Liang Hua Ke and Wen Qu Hua Ji.
忌Tan Lang Hua Ji (Gui years)
Desires that stay unmet, romance that brings trouble, or overdoing pleasure and investment; the palace it lands in is where you learn the word enough. The upside: it forces focus, and many people build real skill exactly there.
Tan Lang in folklore: Daji and the star lord
Popular tradition, drawing on Investiture of the Gods, makes Tan Lang the consort Daji: beautiful, clever and skilled at reading King Zhou's every wish. She matches Tan Lang's charm, desire and skill with people, and her story also shows the cost of desire out of control. Pairing Tan Lang with Daji is a literary association for memory, not a claim that Tan Lang people resemble her. In Taoist belief, the Tan Lang Star Lord is the first of the seven Northern Dipper star lords.
Tan Lang as Life Master
The Life Master is set by the branch of your Life Palace: anyone whose Life Palace is in Zi has Tan Lang as Life Master, wherever Tan Lang itself sits. The Life Master describes inborn temperament, the engine of a life. With Tan Lang it carries curiosity, desire and a social instinct, and you go after what you want. Check the brightness and transformations of the palace holding Tan Lang: that is your most natural source of drive. The Life Master and Body Master guide has the full table.
The example chart's Life Master is Prosperity and its Body Master is Fire Star.
Life Master and Body Master lookupA decade or year in a Tan Lang palace
When a ten-year period reaches Tan Lang's palace, opportunities and temptations both multiply: a wider network, new fields, new skills, and a busier love and social life. A year whose Life Palace meets Tan Lang is often a year of wanting a lot, good for deals, sales and meeting people. If Tan Lang takes Hua Ji that year or meets malefic stars, slow down and look closely before committing money or your heart.
Advice for Tan Lang people
Each year pick one main goal and one new interest, and park the rest on a list. Spend your social energy on long relationships, not just on a lively night. Split money three ways: essentials, fixed savings, and a share you can enjoy freely. Tan Lang's desire is fuel; put it in the right engine and it will take you further than anyone.
