Tian Tong's palace and its three sides
This palaceOppositeTrineWhat is the Tian Tong star?
Tian Tong is Yang Water, the fourth star of the Southern Dipper, and it transforms into fortune (福). It rules the Fortune Palace and belongs to the Zi Wei group, placed right after Wu Qu, so it always sits five branches behind Zi Wei. That fixed spacing has consequences: with Tian Tong in the Life Palace, Wu Qu is always in your Parents Palace, Tai Yang in Fortune, Tian Ji in Career, Zi Wei in Friends and Lian Zhen in Children.
Tian Tong's fortune is not a windfall. It is contentment, being looked after, and finding a way out when things get hard. The star has a childlike streak: easily pleased, easily satisfied, and a little too comfortable at times. Tradition adds a twist: a dose of pressure, such as Hua Quan or a mild malefic star, wakes Tian Tong up and makes its luck more solid.

Tian Tong in the Life Palace: personality
With Tian Tong in the Life Palace you are likely easy-going, kind and conflict-shy, the person who wants everyone at the table to be happy. You know where the good food is, which song suits a rainy evening, and how to make a home feel warm. Soft-hearted and emotional, you are often the first to turn up when a friend is down.
The gentleness has a price. Tian Tong settles into comfort, puts off unpleasant tasks, hides under pressure, or hopes someone else will decide. For many Tian Tong people the turning point is the day they are pushed out of the comfort zone and discover how much they can carry.

Six Tian Tong pairings, by branch
Tian Tong shares a palace with only three major stars: Tai Yin in Zi and Wu, Ju Men in Chou and Wei, Tian Liang in Yin and Shen. In the other six branches it sits alone. Its brightness often differs within a pair (strong in Zi but fallen in Wu, fair in Yin but strong in Shen), so the same pairing can feel quite different from one side of the chart to the other.

This palaceOppositeTrineTian Tong appearance in tradition
Classical descriptions give Tian Tong people a rounded build, a round or squarish face, fair skin and soft eyes, often looking younger than their age. A bright Tian Tong is said to look more well-fed and fortunate; a fallen one, slimmer and more wistful. With Tai Yin the look is delicate, with Tian Liang kindly and steady, with Ju Men expressive, as if keeping a secret. Enjoy it as old lore, not as a mirror.
Tian Tong for women and men
Women with Tian Tong in the Life Palace are gentle, affectionate and well liked, with a weakness for good food and beautiful things. With Tai Yin they are often described as refined beauties; with Ju Men they keep more to themselves. Old texts call the female Tian Tong blessed but ruled by feeling. She most needs to be understood, and a steady partner who offers security suits her.
Men with Tian Tong tend to be mild, good-humoured and fond of the good life, not especially competitive, and very devoted to home. With Tai Yin they are attentive and popular. In marriage they adapt easily but tend to let conflicts drift; a partner with a clear sense of direction, plus his tolerance, makes a comfortable match.
Best careers for Tian Tong: Tian Ji always in the Career Palace
With Tian Tong in the Life Palace, Tian Ji always sits in the Career Palace, so the right job leaves room for thinking and planning without being cut-throat. Tian Tong's value at work is making people comfortable: customers come back and colleagues cooperate. In a friendly environment, its patience and service become a quiet competitive edge.
- Food, hospitality, travel and leisure
- Design, art, music, beauty and lifestyle
- Teaching (especially young children), social work, counselling, nursing
- Public service, administration and HR in large organisations
- Sales, customer care and PR (especially with Ju Men)
Tian Tong and money: Tai Yang always faces the Wealth Palace
With Tian Tong in the Life Palace, Tai Yang always sits in the Fortune Palace, which is directly opposite the Wealth Palace. Whatever is in your Wealth Palace, Tai Yang shines on it from across the chart. Tai Yang gives first and is rewarded later, so Tian Tong money tends to build through goodwill and reputation. In three layouts the Wealth Palace is empty and borrows Tai Yang's pair outright.
Tai Yang's brightness matters. For Tian Tong in Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao or Chen, that Tai Yang is bright; for Tian Tong in Wei, Shen, You, Xu or Hai it is neutral, weak or fallen, and earning takes more push. The usual leaks are spending on comfort, lending out of kindness and never tracking money. Saving a fixed amount first steadies things a lot.
Tian Tong in love: Tian Ji always faces the Spouse Palace
The Spouse Palace sits opposite the Career Palace, and with Tian Tong in the Life Palace that Career Palace always holds Tian Ji. Love therefore carries a Tian Ji flavour: a clever, idea-rich partner, or a relationship that keeps needing to talk and adjust. The Spouse Palace itself holds Tai Yin, Ju Men or Tian Liang in three layouts and is empty in the other three, borrowing Tian Ji's pairs.
Tian Tong is romantic, affectionate and wants to feel cherished. Tradition says its love life is hard first and easy later: some bumps before settling down, calm afterwards. The main advice is not to go quiet during a quarrel; say what you feel so your partner knows how to look after you.
Tian Tong and health
As a Water star, Tian Tong is traditionally linked with the kidneys, bladder, urinary and hormonal systems, and the ears. Its people love food more than exercise, so weight, blood sugar and fluid retention are the usual reminders, and low moods can mean more snacking. A chart shows tendencies only; if something feels wrong, have a doctor check it.
Tian Tong brightness by branch
Tian Tong is brightest (廟) in Si and Hai, strong (旺) in Zi and Shen, fair (利) in Yin, neutral (平) in Mao, Chen, You and Xu, weak (不) in Chou and Wei, and fallen (陷) in Wu. Uneven pairs are its signature: strong in Zi but fallen in Wu, fair in Yin but strong in Shen. Bright, its luck arrives naturally and moods stay even; dim, luck has to be earned and feelings swing more. A dim Tian Tong with Hua Quan often turns pressure into drive, so read brightness together with the transformations.

Tian Tong Hua Lu, Hua Quan and Hua Ji
In the standard table Tian Tong takes three transformations: Hua Lu in Bing years, Hua Quan in Ding years and Hua Ji in Geng years, and no Hua Ke. Years ending in 6, 7 and 0 are Bing, Ding and Geng, but Zi Wei Dou Shu changes the year at Lunar New Year, so a January or early February birthday may belong to the year before. Some editions swap Geng's Hua Ke and Hua Ji between Tian Tong and Tai Yin; we follow the common reading with Tian Tong Hua Ji.
忌The example chart is a 庚 year, so Tian Tong takes Hua Ji.
祿Tian Tong Hua Lu (Bing years)
The blessing star gains wealth: goodwill and money come easily, and people offer chances and resources unasked. The only risk is getting too comfortable to move; good luck still needs tending.
權Tian Tong Hua Quan (Ding years)
The gentle star gains opinions and drive, moving from waiting to asking. It is the most welcome transformation for Tian Tong, and a fallen Tian Tong with Hua Quan often turns hardship into fuel.
忌Tian Tong Hua Ji (Geng years)
Fortune is discounted: dissatisfaction, feeling hard done by, or unseen effort, and a wish to hide when low. The palace it falls in is where you most need to learn to look after yourself. It is not bad luck; it asks you to go after the life you want.
Tian Tong in folklore: King Wen of Zhou
Popular tradition matches the major stars with characters from the novel Investiture of the Gods, and Tian Tong is King Wen of Zhou. A kind ruler, he was imprisoned by the last Shang king for years, is said to have worked on the I Ching hexagrams in captivity, and after his release recruited Jiang Ziya and laid the foundations of the Zhou dynasty. Keeping faith through hardship and leaving blessings to his descendants is Tian Tong in a nutshell. It is a memory aid, not a method.
Tian Tong as Body Master
The Body Master comes from your birth-year branch: everyone born in a Rabbit (卯) or Rooster (酉) year has Tian Tong as Body Master. Zi Wei Dou Shu changes the year at Lunar New Year, so check early-year birthdays. It describes how you act as life goes on: a Tian Tong Body Master relaxes with age, values quality of life and harmony, and prefers to mediate rather than fight.
The Life Master comes from the Life Palace branch, and a Life Palace in Yin or Xu gives Lu Cun. So 'Life Master Lu Cun, Body Master Tian Tong' means a Life Palace in Yin or Xu and a Rabbit or Rooster birth year: stability and saving first, then comfort, with sensible spending and a willingness to invest in a good life. A Tian Tong Body Master does not mean Tian Tong sits in your Life Palace. The full Life Master and Body Master table has its own guide.
The example chart's Life Master is Prosperity and its Body Master is Fire Star.
Life Master and Body Master lookupA decade or year in a Tian Tong palace
A ten-year period in the palace holding Tian Tong usually moves at a gentler pace: smoother relationships, a better quality of life, and a good time to recover, start a family or take up a hobby. A Tian Tong year is often a breather. The risk is drifting without goals; in a Geng year, when Tian Tong Hua Ji is triggered, moods and household matters need more care, so plan rest and talk things through.
Advice for Tian Tong people
Set goals that are clear but not frightening, such as a fixed monthly saving or one new skill a year, and replace 'later' with 'ten minutes today'. Look after your own feelings before everyone else's. Tian Tong's luck is real; you just have to reach out and catch it.
