Hua Lu, the Prosperity Transformation: Meaning and 12 Palaces

Hua Lu (化祿) is the first of the Four Transformations and the one everyone hopes for. It makes a star run smoothly and pay off, bringing money, chances, goodwill and a lighter mood. More is not always better, though: where your Lu sits is often where your attention, and your spending, go too. This guide covers what Hua Lu means, which star takes it in each year, how to read it in the twelve palaces, and combinations such as Lu with Ji, double Lu and self Hua Lu. Add your birth details to see which palace holds yours.

The example chart's Hua Lu is Tai Yang, in the Travel Palace.

The decade and year rows use the stem of the decade palace and of the year, so they change over time. The birth-year row never does.

What Hua Lu means: resources, affinity and flow

Lu originally meant an official's salary, the grain and silver paid out on schedule, so Hua Lu means something coming in. That can be money, but also opportunities, contacts, good food and the feeling of being treated well. In the palace holding Hua Lu you rarely need to force things; they tend to find you, and you enjoy the work more.

To read it, start with the star. Hua Lu on Wu Qu or Tai Yin leans to real money, on Tian Tong or Tan Lang to pleasure and popularity, on Tian Ji or Ju Men to rewards earned with brains or words. Then look at the palace and its opposite: Lu in a palace is something you enjoy yourself, while Lu shining in from the opposite palace is more like a gift delivered to your door. Lu also means spending, so what flows in easily can flow out just as fast.

Hua Lu

Which stars take Hua Lu in each year stem

Each of the ten stems gives Hua Lu to one major star; no auxiliary star ever takes it, and Tian Fu, Tian Xiang, Qi Sha and Zi Wei never do. The gain looks very different from one star to the next.

  • The Zi Wei year changes at Lunar New Year (正月初一), not at 立春, so births in January or early February may take the stem of the year before.
  • Lian Zhen Hua Lu (Jia years)

Lian Zhen's energy is said to be imprisonment, and Hua Lu opens the cage. Tension and calculation turn into charm, PR and social reward. This Lu usually comes through people and occasions, so the more you invest in relationships, the more it pays.

  • Tian Ji Hua Lu (Yi years)

In Yi years the Lu lands on the quickest mind in the chart, so the reward goes to whoever thinks of it first: an early call, a process that tidies up chaos, a successful introduction. It comes less like a salary and more like a string of separate chances; write them down and turn them into a method.

  • Tian Tong Hua Lu (Bing years)

Tian Tong is already the star of good fortune, so Hua Lu doubles the comfort. Gains arrive softly: easy colleagues, effortless income, small daily pleasures. The risk is getting too cosy; where there is Lu, you may not want to move.

  • Tai Yin Hua Lu (Ding years)

Tai Yin rules wealth and property, and with Hua Lu it becomes the Lu that stays: saving, buying a home, building a family, slow accumulation. It moves at the pace of patience and care, and the brighter Tai Yin is in its palace, the steadier the gain.

  • Tan Lang Hua Lu (Wu years)

Tan Lang is the star of desire and romance. With Hua Lu, socialising, talent, entertainment, food and attraction can all open doors. It is lively, earns well and spends well, and suits work built around people and pleasure.

  • Wu Qu Hua Lu (Ji years)

Wu Qu rules the Wealth Palace, so its Hua Lu is the wealth star getting paid directly: salary, sales and returns you can count. It rewards discipline and follow-through more than any other Lu; the harder you work, the bigger it grows.

  • Example

Tai Yang Hua Lu (Geng years)

Tai Yang's Lu comes from giving and being seen: caring for others, standing up front, fighting for the team. Reputation comes first and money follows. It shows most clearly when Tai Yang sits in a daytime palace; in a night palace, expect the payback to take longer.

  • Ju Men Hua Lu (Xin years)

Ju Men rules speech and gossip, and Hua Lu turns talk into talent. Teaching, sales, law, counselling and media, any work that lives on explaining, benefits most. It also softens some of Ju Men's quarrels: well-chosen words turn misunderstanding into trust.

  • Tian Liang Hua Lu (Ren years)

Tian Liang is the sheltering star, so its Lu comes from looking after people and solving their problems, or from elders, institutions and insurance. Many teachers warn it against chasing profit; grabbing too hard loses the integrity that makes Tian Liang trusted.

  • Po Jun Hua Lu (Gui years)

Po Jun rules loss and breaking, and Hua Lu makes it gain through change: replacing the old, switching tracks, starting something new. It earns by moving and often spends while earning, and suits people who take risks but know when to stop.

Hua Lu in the 12 palaces

The palace holding Hua Lu is where things go more smoothly and people are kinder. These notes are for the birth-year Hua Lu; a decade or yearly Hua Lu reads the same way over ten years or one.

Hua Lu combinations: Lu with Ji, double Lu, three wonders

Hua Lu rarely acts alone. Meeting other transformations or the Lu Cun star changes what it says. These are the combinations tradition talks about most; they describe tendencies, not fixed outcomes.

  • Lu and Ji in one palace

When a palace holds both Hua Lu and Hua Ji, from different stars or different layers, chances and strings arrive together: money comes in with matching costs, love is sweet with something you cannot let go of. Tradition says gain comes first and loss after; in practice, set something aside for the risk while things are good.

  • Double Lu: Hua Lu with Lu Cun

Hua Lu with Lu Cun in the same palace, or meeting across the three sides and four squares, is called double Lu, a doubling of income and good fortune. Hua Lu flows and Lu Cun keeps, so together you earn and save. Lu Cun always has Qing Yang and Tuo Luo on either side, so expect competition and delays to come with it.

  • Lu, Quan and Ke together: the three wonders

When Hua Lu, Hua Quan and Hua Ke all meet in the three sides and four squares of the Life Palace, tradition calls it the three wonders gathering: resources, ability and reputation at once. It does not promise an easy life, but when chances come, your hand is usually better than most.

  • Lu broken by a clash

An old verse says that when Lu meets a clash, danger hides inside the good luck. It refers to Hua Lu or Lu Cun hit by Hua Ji from the opposite palace, or sharing a palace with Di Kong or Di Jie, so the gain gets damaged or discounted. The Lu is still there but unstable: bank income promptly and avoid high leverage.

What is self Hua Lu, and how do you read it?

Every palace has its own stem. When that stem gives Hua Lu to a star in the same palace, it is a self Hua Lu. Born in a Jia or Ji year, your Yin palace has the stem Bing, which gives Hua Lu to Tian Tong; if Tian Tong sits in that palace (it shares it with Tian Liang), the palace self-transforms Lu.

Flying-star schools usually read it as gain flowing out of the palace: that area brings luck and reward but does not hold on to it, passing it to others or showing up as a generous, easy-going streak. Self Hua Lu in the Wealth Palace earns smoothly and spends quickly; in the Spouse Palace you are very good to your partner. Flying between palaces works the same way: the Property Palace sending Hua Lu into the Travel Palace usually means family resources back your ventures away from home, or a move or property elsewhere pays off.

Decade Hua Lu and yearly Hua Lu

Decade Hua Lu comes from the stem of the decade palace and points to the area with the most opportunity for those ten years. Landing on your birth-year Hua Lu palace, it is good on good; landing on your birth-year Hua Ji palace, it often brings a turn, loosening an old problem.

Yearly Hua Lu follows the year's stem: Tian Tong in 2026, a Bing Wu year, and Tai Yin in 2027, a Ding Wei year. Wherever that star sits in your chart is the year's likeliest source of good news; check whether it falls in the three sides and four squares of your yearly Life Palace to see how close it comes.

Making the most of Hua Lu

Hua Lu is a tailwind, not a finish line. In its palace, use the easy period to build structure: move a fixed share of income into savings, turn popularity into real relationships, and do not just enjoy being liked. Do not take it for granted either; many people find in later life that their Hua Lu palace is the area they looked after least.
