Tian Xiang StarThe Minister Who Holds the Seal
Tian Xiang (天相) is Yang Water, the fifth star of the Southern Dipper, transformed into the seal (印). It rules career and the comforts of daily life, and tradition pictures it as the minister who keeps the emperor's seal. People with Tian Xiang in the Life Palace are fair, considerate and good at mediating. It takes no transformations of its own; its neighbours decide its mood, and they are always Ju Men and Tian Liang. Add your birth details to see where Tian Xiang sits in your chart.

This palaceOppositeTrineWhat is the Tian Xiang star?
Tian Xiang is Yang Water, the fifth star of the Southern Dipper and part of the Tian Fu group. It transforms into the seal: an official stamp that stands for authority granted, trust and rules. It governs career and is also called a star of food and clothing, so its people rarely lack the basics of a decent life. Tian Xiang and Tian Fu always echo each other across one palace, and together they are the pairing tradition calls Fu Xiang.
What makes Tian Xiang unusual is that it never transforms, yet it is easily coloured by its neighbours. With Tian Xiang in the Life Palace, Ju Men always sits in the Siblings Palace and Tian Liang always sits in the Parents Palace, so the Life Palace is always flanked by the two. When Ju Men takes Hua Lu, tradition calls it wealth and shelter flanking the seal; when Ju Men takes Hua Ji with Qing Yang, it is punishment and trouble flanking the seal.

Tian Xiang in the Life Palace: personality
With Tian Xiang in the Life Palace you are likely fair-minded, reasonable and true to your word, polite and good at reading a room. You are often the one who smooths things over and ties up loose ends. You like order, dress appropriately, and speak up first when a friend is treated unfairly.
The blind spot is caring too much what others think. Wanting everyone to be happy makes it hard to say no, so you take on too much and wear yourself out, and decisions can drag while others pull you in different directions. Tian Xiang's lesson is to ask what you want before deciding whom to help.

Six Tian Xiang pairings, by branch
Tian Xiang shares a palace only with Lian Zhen (Zi and Wu), Wu Qu (Yin and Shen) and Zi Wei (Chen and Xu), and sits alone in the other six branches. In every layout Po Jun sits opposite, Tian Fu sits in the Wealth Palace and Tan Lang sits in the Spouse Palace: a world outside that keeps changing, money that grows by keeping, and a love life with some heat. That is the frame of every Tian Xiang chart.

This palaceOppositeTrineTian Xiang appearance in tradition
Classical texts describe Tian Xiang people with regular, refined features, a square or rounded face, clear skin and a medium build, courteous in manner and careful about clothes and grooming, so the first impression is neat and appropriate. With Lian Zhen the features are sharper, with Wu Qu the frame is sturdier and the gaze steadier, with Zi Wei the bearing is calm and dignified. Treat this as a picture of the star, not of you.
Tian Xiang for women and men
Women with Tian Xiang in the Life Palace are gentle, courteous and thoughtful, attentive to how family and colleagues feel, and often a manager's trusted right hand. Tradition calls her a wife who supports her husband's success. Today the thing to watch is wanting to please everyone and putting her own needs last; learning to say no makes both friendships and marriage lighter.
Men with Tian Xiang are steady and principled, keep their promises and care about reputation, and do well as advisers, managers or professionals whom friends can rely on. The weak spots are indecision and being swayed by the people around them. For both, marriage is read through the Tan Lang that always sits in the Spouse Palace, covered below.
Best careers for Tian Xiang
Tian Xiang rules career, and it does best keeping the seal and coordinating inside a structured organisation: managing processes, contracts or people. You do not need to be the boss to matter; you are the gatekeeper every team needs, and the fairer and more transparent the workplace, the better you perform.
- Legal work, auditing, administration, executive assistance and HR
- Public service, large companies and well-run institutions
- Finance, accounting and purchasing (especially with Wu Qu)
- Fashion, beauty, food and lifestyle businesses (the star of food and clothing)
- Consulting, brokerage and PR, anywhere many sides must agree
Tian Xiang and money: Tian Fu always in the Wealth Palace
With Tian Xiang in the Life Palace, Tian Fu always sits in the Wealth Palace. Tian Fu is the treasury, so Tian Xiang money tends to be steady and predictable: salary, bonuses and long-term savings add up best. A Zi or Wu chart pairs it with Zi Wei, Yin or Shen with Lian Zhen, Chen or Xu with Wu Qu, and the other three have Tian Fu alone.
Tian Xiang earns through trust, and its losses often come through trust too: guaranteeing a loan, lending to a friend, or spending to keep face. Qi Sha always sits in the Fortune Palace, so now and then you will feel like taking a big swing; one more night of thought before investing protects the treasury.
Tian Xiang in love: Tan Lang always in the Spouse Palace
With Tian Xiang in the Life Palace, Tan Lang always sits in the Spouse Palace. Courteous Tian Xiang is drawn to warm, charismatic people who know how to enjoy life; they make life richer and also bring lessons about desire and temptation. Tan Lang's companion varies: Lian Zhen for a Chou or Wei chart, Wu Qu for Mao or You, Zi Wei for Si or Hai, and alone in the other three.
In love Tian Xiang is considerate and loyal and will make room for a partner, but tends to swallow hurt. What a Tian Xiang marriage needs is honesty and boundaries: if your partner wants novelty, plan it together instead of quietly going along.
Tian Xiang and health
As a Water star, Tian Xiang is traditionally linked with the kidneys, the urinary system and the skin. Its people often skip rest while looking after others, and stress tends to show in sleep and skin; plenty of water and a regular routine are the best upkeep. These are traditional reminders only, so see a doctor about any real symptoms.
Tian Xiang brightness: fallen in Mao and You
Tian Xiang is brightest (廟) in Zi, Chou, Yin, Wu and Shen, favoured (得) in Chen, Si, Wei, Xu and Hai, and fallen (陷) only in Mao and You. A bright Tian Xiang carries real authority: people listen and follow. A fallen one finds mediation harder and can end up pleasing neither side. Within one pair, Chou is brightest and Wei only favoured, so a Chou chart carries more weight.

Why Tian Xiang never transforms
In the standard table from the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, Tian Xiang, like Tian Fu and Qi Sha, never takes Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke or Hua Ji, so there is no Tian Xiang Hua Ji in the table we use. Some editions give it Hua Ke in Geng years; we follow the common table. Think of the seal itself as unchanging: what matters is what it is stamped on, good news or trouble.
So transformations reach Tian Xiang through its flanks. Ju Men sits on one side and Tian Liang on the other. In Xin years Ju Men takes Hua Lu, the wealth and shelter flanking the seal, bringing helpers and resources. In Ding or Gui years Ju Men takes Hua Ji, and with Qing Yang on the other side it becomes punishment and trouble flanking the seal: watch documents, contracts and gossip. Transformations of a companion such as Lian Zhen, Wu Qu or Zi Wei also change Tian Xiang directly.
The example chart is a 庚 year: Tian Xiang has no birth-year transformation.
Tian Xiang in folklore: Grand Tutor Wen Zhong
Popular tradition links Tian Xiang with Wen Zhong, the Grand Tutor of the Shang court in Investiture of the Gods. He served two kings loyally, upheld the court's rules, tried to rescue the dynasty when the last king lost his way, and died on the battlefield. Loyal, rule-keeping and always repairing the damage: that is the minister's star. It is a literary device to remember the star by, not a forecast.
Tian Xiang as Body Master: born in Chou or Wei years
The Body Master depends on your birth-year branch, and anyone born in a Chou (Ox) or Wei (Goat) year has Tian Xiang as Body Master. It describes where your effort goes and how you grow after midlife: these people care more and more about duty, fairness and reputation, and often become the peacemaker of the family or group.
Having Tian Xiang as Body Master does not mean it sits in your Life Palace. Look at the palace where Tian Xiang falls in your chart: that area is what you work on for life. Our charts change the year at Lunar New Year, not at Li Chun, so if you were born in January or February, trust your chart.
The example chart's Life Master is Prosperity and its Body Master is Fire Star.
Life Master and Body Master lookupA decade or year in a Tian Xiang palace
A ten-year period in the palace holding Tian Xiang is a time to build trust and structure: step into management, earn qualifications, put family and finances in order. When the yearly Life Palace lands on Tian Xiang, expect to mediate or tidy up for others, and doing it well builds your name. Watch for Ju Men Hua Ji with Qing Yang flanking the seal in that period, and be extra careful with contracts and guarantees.
Advice for Tian Xiang people
Look after your own needs before managing other people's feelings, and give yourself a night before saying yes. Write down your principles and follow them when you are torn, so favours cannot hold you hostage. Your value lies in fairness and trust; keep those, and however the stars around you change, you will stand firm.
